That's interesting. I haven't heard about that battery calibration before... looks like I will be doing that, I definitely want to get the best battery life out of my MBP as possible. Cool cool, also, keep us updated if any whine/screen problems arise. Thanks iwamas!

speakers....

The Speakers on this thing ROCK!!! Frontrow is also a very cool feature... I love the two finger right click feature.... Well, the battery is almost dead.... time to let it sit turned off for 5 hours in order to complete the calibration.... I am going to miss using it, but at least I have the PB and not a pc to keep me going these next 5 hours.... so far... not a single hiccup.... the machine is working to perfection.... more on it later...

itching is right

still have a few more hours to go before I can boot the MBP up again.... 5 hours... it's killing me to see it lying there and not be able to use it....

Anyway.... what revision? how can I tell? the model number of it is A1151 if that helps... as for where it was made... weren't they all made in china? it does say assembled in china on the box...

Ambiguous Directions - Step 5 Says Turn Off Computer OR allow to sleep for 5 hours

I am on here daily... just not always posting... Screen brightness looks even to me, even with a solid background color... I will however keep everyone abreast on whether or not any issues creep up... as for the callibration process.... according to the official MBP userguide (and on apple's website):

Calibrating Your Battery
To get the longest running time from your battery, calibrate it sometime during the first week you have your MacBook Pro and recalibrate occasionally to keep your battery functioning at its fullest capacity.

To calibrate your battery:
5 Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or longer.
6 Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged again.

Step number 5 is what i was refering to...
The way I read this, it says you have a choice of turning it off and plugging in the power cord immediately for a recharge that will surely take less than 5 hours

OR OR OR OR OR

allow to sleep for 5 hours or longer then plug in the power cord for recharge.

So you can turn off the computer and recharge the battery right away - not wait 5 hours first the way I read it. :) Those instructions are ambiguous at best.

If you look at it as six steps to calibrate... then you would leave it asleep or off for 5 hours, before plugging back in.... anyway.... that's what I did... would rather err on the side of caution.... It's been over the 5 hours now, and I am recharging my MBP... I will post what kind of battery life I am getting later today....

iwamas, you have revision A.

See everyone? from all these problems, we can conclude, that China cna't make thigns 'right' or 'perfect' for jack. There will always be problem. How do I draw that conclusion? Oak Groove plants products are always 'near perfect' or have very little problems.

Tilting & Cooling Stand For 17" MBP?

Has anyone found a good tilted stand that also contains cooling fans, preferably variable speed, that works out pretty well with the 17" MBP? I'm disabled & spend most of my time in bed with my iBook G4 on my lap or bed next to me, on a tray, to allow it to get the cooling it needs & not get 'smoothered' by the blankets. I'd like to get a 17" MBP which would be easier for me to use if it was on a tilted stand, sitting on a table right next to my bed. If I could include cooling in the tilt stand, that would be great for my purposes.

My computer is on 24/7 because my son & his wife are in Iraq, 101st Airborne, & another son is in Afghanistan, 961st Engineer Battalion; if any of them 'chime-in' on Yahoo I.M., I don't want to miss them. -Thanks

I would go iCurve + Bluetooth keyboard would work fine, mbp's stay nice and cool on icurve no need for fans

iSIGHT & YAHOO I.M.?

I forgot to ask in my previous post- has anyone with the 17" MBP tried the iSight camera with Yahoo I.M.'s 'VIEW MY WEB CAM?' feature? Or isn't the iSight camera expected to be used that way - with Yahoo I.M. - as a web cam? Right now, with my iBook G4, I use a seperate add-on camera, but it would be handy to have the built in camera ready to go, when my soldier sons & daughter-in-law call from Iraq or Afghanistan. Thanks.

Guessing Yahoo Web Cam Will Work But Why Not iChatAV?

I don't have your MBP but yes that should work. But AIM is free. So why not use AIM to iChat cross platform or just plain iChatAV Mac to Mac?

Do you understand that iChat is global video chat? Or is this about Yahoo's dial up video capability? I'm really confused about why you want to use Yahoo instead of iChat. I assume it's no broadband over there? Or what? Perhaps you could tell us more about exactly what the hookup is between what two or three computers? Thanks.

iSIGHT & OVER SEAS MILITARY CHAT EXPLAINED-

My soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan are usually using their own PC notebooks & web cams that work very well with Yahoo I.M.; sometimes, depending on where their missions take them, they're using a 'public' PC & web cam if one's available. All the public Army computers have some version of Yahoo I.M. installed on them, I assume because the Army has decided that Yahoo I.M. is kind of 'universal' for everyone. None of the internet connections are broadband, unless you pay $75 to have it wired into your sleeping area, & when you work 12 hour combat shifts, you don't spend a lot of time online. It's pretty much work, sleep, eat & work again, so the broadband charge isn't worth it for them.

As I understand it, iChat is a Mac only piece of software, I'm not very familiar with it at all. We've always used Yahoo I.M. with stand alone web cams. On their end, they can get their web cam set up a lot faster than I can & they're usually 'squeezing' me in after a mission before they go to sleep & I don't want to waste time setting up my web cam, taking away from our 'talk time' & I can see them on their web cam, they just can't see me. But if the built in iSight camera could be set up so it would be ready to work with Yahoo I.M. as soon as any of them 'chime in', that would really be great. But I don't know if the iSight camera can be set-up to do what I would like it to do. Thanks.

iChat Is Not Mac Only - It Interfaces w/PC AIM Clients - Stickam.com Flash Vid Chat 2

Unless Apple has secretly changed their built-in iSight to USB 2, I'm pretty sure it's a Firewire bus camera microphone which will work with Yahoo IM easily and well over dial up - which iChat can't do at all. But you may want to learn how to use iChatAV for domestic broadband video chats. It's super fast.

Another new video chat option that is also cross paltform and low bandwidth is at stickam.com. Does Flash video chat on the fly in real time. That should also work very well over dial up as Flash Video uses very low bandwidth. Cross platform, low bandwidth, multiple video participants.
