you obviously dont know Apple very well, $2800 is like small change to them

....you missed the whole point of what I was saying.

I wasn't talking about the high price of apple's laptops. I was talking about this guy's expectations.

It is like a guy is saying that when he bought a 80,000$ lexus or bmw car brand new from the factory, he is very happy that it did not have scratches, dents, no loose object, no loud noise as if the $80K price range is not high enough to remove any doubts that it would have scratches/dents, etc etc.

First of all, who is "Them"?

Second, WTF U talkin about :D

i'm talking about the fact that both my last unibody 15" MBP's (yes both, i.e. 2!!) had major defects (one covered in this white kind of dried toothpaste substance, the other came with a broken backlight) both had scrathes out of the box, and both were brand new. Hopefully my 17" wont give me the same troubles.
I love Apple i really do, but they seriously need to get their act together regarding quality control.

WTF?
Where did you bought the laptops from?

Yeah but I imagine they fix the issues adequately .

I remember a few years back I had an Acer laptop. Tech support was one guy in Irvine CA named Jeff (I think that was his name)

Nice guy Jeff was actually. But perhaps a bit overworked. :D

Apple store online, both shipped new from the factory in China, i wonder maybe the white paste was just the workers getting excited seeing the new unibody laptops, or then again, maybe not, it looked like left over machining residue it was quite gross, and loads of people report it.

Strange, I didn't hear much about this even from many people i know who bought unibody and did not have any issues. Possible a few batch came in like that.

I am not worked up. It looks like you are though.

I think it is funny someone would think he would be believed.

Using a massive font = yelling = being worked up lol. In either case, I could care less whether he's got his new machine or not (or even if he ordered one). If he's got pics, a video, or benchmarks I'll take a look.

Wait, what other 17" on the market can come close to 6 hours? Everyone knows that when a company says 5 they mean 2-2.5 and when they say 8 they mean 5-6.

IIRC 8 hours was on web surfing test.

In the times I was getting 7:30 out of iBook G4 @ 733MHz, while it was rated at 6 hours. The load was minimal: PDF book in Preview and *NO* iTunes in background. (Think: travel)

In the times it took me a while to realize that it was iTunes which kept hard drive spinning and eating battery. I remember I went thru number of media players to find one which can cache tracks completely in RAM.

I wish Apple (or somebody else) had provided tool to find apps responsible for eating battery. e.g. apps which use 3D GPU functions, apps which spin hard drive, etc.

P.S. Just ordered mine: matte, 256GB SSD (rest on defaults)

The problem was a white chalky-looking substance, apparently melded into the unibody finish, most obviously around the speaker perforations. I've seen it too, and so have others.
But quite what this has to do with first impressions of the new 17" is beyond me.

I agree what Apple charge is a very good price, and actually suprisingly competitive, but i'd still wait until Snow Leopard is released in August and buy 2 x 4GB sticks for half the price they are now.

How do you know that in August you wouldn't be compelled to wait till next February and get S.Leopard SP2 and 2 x 8GB?? Or whatever new and shiny would appear before August?

The problem with that I have is waiting might never end. I have learned that through real life experience, but it also applies nicely to gadgets: do not wait til tomorrow, get all what you need today.

Stuff happens, technology especially fabs are never perfect. As long as Apple is taking care of the problem and provide excellent customer care, it shouldn't be a problem.

Agreed that Apple should improve their quality control, but so does everybody else. (like ummmmmmmmm Nvidia?)

yea memory is way too expensive right now and not worth the money.

I wouldnt say its small change but just the norm. :)

PS. Steve Jobs wipes his ass with our $$ every night!

if that is the case, i wonder where his toilet flushes to.. ill be there with some gloves and anti-bacterial spray ready to cash in! cha-ching!! :)

I'm more interested in seeing what SL will do on my Mac Pro-my top 4-5GB has never been used. For the MBP i'd like to see if 8GB provides any significant performance gain with a SSD, I know it will with a hard drive. If the word gets out that the SSD is "the" upgrade, and no-one is buying RAM, then I think RAM prices might fall even faster--with decreased demand.

I agree, my previous experience has been to buy a computer every 4-5 years (buy when I absolutely need it) but I have now learned it is better to begin shopping/looking after 2. Apple macbooks seem to have a major "jump" in hardware every so often, it is good to wait for these.

Example: Without knowing anything in 2003: Purchased (on sale of course) the last of ti-books a month or so before the Aluminum came out. Jan 2007: almost bought 17" but could see the re-design coming (purchased used 2004 Aluminum computer to get me to next "jump". HAD TO WAIT A LONG TIME but I am glad I waited for the unibody, glossy screen and the mini-display port.

BTW I am guessing that now with no mac world anything Macbook related with be in Summer (Back to School) and Macbook Pro related in Oct/Nov (Christmas) perhaps with us 17" types having to wait until Jan (What we didn't get for Xmas)

As everyone bashes the battery life... ;)

Anyone actually try to replicate the conditions apple used for their test? If so, what'd ya get?

*Testing conducted by Apple in December 2008 using preproduction 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo–based MacBook Pro (17-inch) units with a Better Battery Life setting. Battery life depends on configuration and use. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information. The wireless productivity test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing various websites and editing text in a word processing document with display brightness set to 50%.

Sounds like the quick observations so far had high screen brightness and were performing intensive tasks, but still managed 6 hrs. Maybe apple wasn't too far off, and/or we didn't read the fine print...

TIA!

Are people getting at least 7 hours with the 9400M ? 7 hours is the claim for the 9600GT BTW

That's exactly what I meant. I have none of the 15" troubles with this one. Everything is glorious.

Also on battery life. I did the calibration (just in case) and right now on a full charge with 9400m I get 7 hours and 45 mins of time....VERY close to Apple's benchmarks. Of course this is with brightness at about 1/2 and Bluetooth off, but the AirPort was on. Very impressed.

Thanks for sharing! You will find, as I did, that once you own a 17" laptop it is VERY difficult to go back to using something smaller... I take this thing with me everywhere and it doesn't bother me a bit. I mean, how much heavier is the 17 than the 15? 1.5lbs?

Me too! I found the 17" MBP big during the first few days of use. Now, I feel that it is a bit small. 19" may be better.
