No.... the Macbook Air is for cutting cake:

Rahul is a cool dude and that is just another cool act by him regardless of the computer brand

That revA suffered to the point that the guy who gave it to him as a gift asked him to cut the cake with it :D

After using it for a few days now (Came on the 20th, it is now the 23rd) I've noticed that the battery life on average for me lasts 6 hours on the 9400M with 75-100% brightness and me just doing normal stuff on it. Web Surfing, Email, IM. I get about 5 hours with the same GPU when doing Photoshop or Aperture combined with Mail, Safari, IM. Always with Wifi on and I usually have at-least 1 VNC console to my Server on at any one time.

One thing I noticed that doesn't work is the Ambient Light Sensor. It just does not work on my MacBook Pro at all. The Screen does not Auto-Dimm and neither does the Keyboard light. If I put a light bulb right on top of the computer (literally) the lights do not change. And if I then fill the room with complete pitch darkness again no change. And I have the Auto Sensing set for the Keyboard & Display. (Double, and Triple checked with many changes from it Off and On). Basically I can turn the Keyboard lights on even in pure daylight.

I'm not sure why it happens I'm interested to know if any other 17" Uni owners have a similar thing happening to them. Not a reason for me to send it back mind I quite like having complete control over the Keyboard lighting. And I always had the auto-screen Dimming off on my old 17".

I'm finding the Touch Pad a bit difficult to get used to. I was accustomed to leaving my Thumb on the base of the button on my old 17" and then Clicking when required. The problem is as you apply pressure to the button via your Thumb the thumb moves ever so slightly, just from the compression it fills out a few mm's in one direction or another. This is enough to make the mouse move a couple of pixels which can make closing windows a fun experience if your not paying attention.

Other then that I'm still loving it really there isn't much to report over the 15" except its bigger and the battery life. I've had no issues with switching between GPUs and everything (except the Ambient Light Sensor) seems to work fine. I thought the 'Chicklet' keyboard would prove to be a problem but I've got used to it and I'd say its on-par with the old keyboard for typing on, the travel between keys can be a bit of a hindrance if you have longish nails (they can get caught in the gaps easily if you don't lift your fingers high enough) but nothing really to complain about.

One thing I was worried about when I got this was the resolution of the screen its so high that I thought reading off the display would hurt my eyes or give me headaches or something like that. And although it was very weird at first it felt like second nature after a few hours. (Old Display was 17" @ 1680x1050, new is 17" @ 1920x1200).

Mine works fine...too well actually so I had to shut it off. It read it from the camera so if I move my head it picks up the light behind me and changes the brightness, real annoying going back and forth when I'm reading something next to my next and I keep moving my head.

Yeah, I'm getting used to it though. I turned on tap click so I don't have to push down the pad which works so much better.

Are you sure it uses the camera because it used light sensors underneath the Keyboard on my last MacBook Pro and the Camera on my new one works fine  Is the new sensor next to the Camera behind the Glass ?

I've only been using mine for a little while but so far I'm happy with it. The backlight leak is very minimal, MUCH better compared to the 15" I had. Someone mentioned that the left speaker sounded louder than the right speaker. I noticed this as well, but the only thing I listened to was the Welcome song that plays on the first boot. I'm really happy to finally have 1920x1200 on notebook, since I'm so used to it on my desktop. I have a feeling I'll be getting a lot more use out of this notebook than others that I've had.

I'm pretty sure there's a light sensor right next to the camera. I don't think it uses the camera itself. I am sure that the light sensor is there though. If I hold my lit iPhone up to the camera area, it affects the screen brightness.

This is Leopard we are talking about, not Windows 95

Thanks, that made my day!
Although - reading comments from obvious troll idiots here usually is entertaining as well. Therefore: go on, MAGICMOXTER and nickcliborne, have fun.

Ontopic: I'm really looking forward to the first serious tests of the 17" MBP, especially display quality. Im not too enthusiastic about my Unibody 15" screen, my GF urgently needs a new Mac, so the temptation is here...

First Mac Ever

I must say I'm very pleased so far. I have never owned a Mac before and I had enough of the PC (Problems Constantly). I just had my MacBook Pro delivered this morning a day before the set delivery time. Upon, opening up the box everything was easy to locate and i knew what everything was. Small packaging was a plus, simple but smart.

When taking the MacBook Pro out the weight struck me. Wow this weighs as much as my HP 15 inch. The design is just awesome what more could be said. After much gazing I started this bad boy up and I must say how easy it was for a first time mac user. The welcome screen it different languages was cool something I have never seen with a new computer before.

I started up played around down loaded all needed updates and just started playing around. I still have the PC habits, but they will pass. This computer is just so much fun and very easy to learn. I was a bit worried of how well I would get the hang of the OSX but, to my suprise better than I had hoped. :D:D:D

I haven't touched the settings on mine and it works all the time, hasn't been a problem for me.

a few good things

I just received my new 17 today, with upgrade to 2.93 and 7200 HD. I currently have a 2008 17 MBP, and have absolutely loved it. I needed to put my current MBP at the front desk, so it needed to be replaced.

First impressions are fantastic. I've read a lot about the screen debate, glossy vs matte, and the keyboard etc. For myself, I am in love with the screen, it is really nice to work with. I have a bluetooth apple keyboard (aluminum) and have always like the chicklet keys, so this is welcome to me. One thing that really impressed me was the amount the screen can move now, a big improvement for angle. Also of note, the hinge tightness is PERFECT! I had a 15 unibody MBP for a few days, then decided to upgrade to the 17 (a poster earlier said that once you have had a 17, it's hard to leave it, same here), and I had a lot of trouble with the hinge being too loose. This is really solid.

No blemishes, solid construction, gave it the once over. Seems to be working just fine. I had no cycles on my battery, was showing just over 6 hours on 9400M card when I first started the computer and was playing on it for a bit.

I love the latch, always hated the press the button to open it mechanism. So far, apple continues to impress.

Just got mine in.... a 2.93 glossy. I got a 500GB/7200 Samsung drive in a few weeks ago and have been running off of an external enclosure. I dropped that into the new MBP and everything's great with it.

The manual says to switch graphic displays to go to energy saver, but no matter what I switch that to (better battery, or better performance) it still says I'm using the 9400M in System Profiler. I've tried logging out and restarting and still nothing. I've seen some videos of this on youtube and my control panel doesn't quite look like it does it the videos.

I'm going to try and reinstalling 10.5.6 and see if that fixes it.

I fixed it by deleting the EnergySaver.prefPane file in /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ and replaced it with the same file from the drive that came from the factory. I now have the option to change the graphics card.

Regarding my Ambient Light Sensor not working:

I repaired permissions and rebooted the system and now it appears to be working fine. I don't know if it just needed the reboot or if the permissions being repaired fixed it but its working great now. :)

I still prefer manual control over all the stuff but its nice to know that it works after-all if they got something so simple like a sensor wrong who knows what else happened under the hood. I'm glad its all fine.

Thanks for this info. Glad to hear it worked out!

Thank you, just too late now, already getting it shipped tomorrow.
Most people I spoke with said no, but always nice to get several opinions.
Got home yesterday, break in, now I am glad I have not gotten my Macbook Pro yet. Cannot wait, only 1½ week to go.
