I struggled to find something better, but just right now I found out and decided to move to Minimalist and it clicked instantly.

The design is better than most of the offering out there, and the 1Password import was seamless, automatically added all my 2FAs and it supports custom sections and fields.

Pricing is fair and also offers a one time purchase.

Thanks for sharing. After trying many alternative apps, I have also transferred to Minimalist. I am in an Apple only environment, and want something more user friendly than Keychain, but without the compexity or recurring cost of 1Password. So Minimalist meets my needs, but also like the roadmap direction shared on app website.

it is , but i would rather support license models and not give in. To each his own. In addition, new 1Password forces you to store your data in the cloud. I don't want that even for free.

Agreed. I'd rather insure the security of my own data than leave that up to someone else, especially in a field that is still highly unregulated. Yes, there are ISOs and those who can set security standards, but that is left up to that company to deal with, unless it falls under the guise of some regulatory specification (PCI, HIPAA, etc.). Most of those wouldn't really apply here, because passwords don't fall under any of those.

I have a good feeling they will upgrade their mobile apps and plugins so they do not work with 1password7 or work problematically.

Hence why the ability for standalone vaults is key with 1Password 7. If you have it and that is the vault you are syncing with, you simply don't have to update the app. Now, where that comes into play is if a new set of specs come out for libraries have to be recompiled for (see 32bit libraries versus 64bit libraries), and iOS jumps onboard with that. If it does, and renders the mobile 1P7 app obsolete, you'll be stuck on the last version of iOS that supports 64bit libraries.

Similar has happened to me with a certain set of apps (Paperboy: Special Delivery, Midway Arcade, Street Fighter II collection), where the developer abandoned the apps instead of updating them per the requirements for iOS 11. And since those are old school classic video games that I play constantly, I've kept my iPad 4 mini on iOS 10.3.3 rather than upgrade and lose them.

So even with that, the app that is left without being upgraded will still work; however, security concerns need apply.

you might want to give strongbox a shot

An interesting new option:

TaaDA - Passwords and 2FA

Just wanted to thank you again for adding my app in here, I do appreciate it.

Honestly - and one thing anyone who knows my posts over the past, what is it now? The best part of a couple of decades if you count the account I lost my login details for and my years of lurking, will tell you, I’m honest to an (often) fault ;) - I don’t know if I’d have added it myself, purely because it’s not cross-platform. So I genuinely do appreciate that you thought it was worth mentioning.

I’ll also just add to your post by mentioning (hopefully I’m allowed in here) that the thread for TaaDA has been getting regular promo codes added to it. I think 50 or 60 ish so far, but I’ve still a few more if the latest batch runs out again.

Annnnnnnd now I’ll shut up, honestly I can waffle on something rotten when my morphine kicks in

No worries! I definitively think the more options people know about the better so they can make their own decisions about what's best for them. Looks like you're doing great work!

Thank you, though I’m not particularly good with compliments. Blame the autism and that I always think I can do better, well, I suppose we always can with time :D

But, it’s 1.0, there’s a long way to go and I’ll keep trying to improve on the app, without breaking the simplicity that everyone (who initially urged me to make it) wanted. Even that will be improved.

Guys I made a recent discovery,
if you use an app that is based on KeePass you can cross sync between the apps, I think it has to be in .kdbx . So you can use KeeWeb on desktop and AuthPass on smartphone. There is an app that makes this easier called Syncthing but there is no iOS versioin, but maybe the iOS app do not need it in the first place it can just sync it.

I have not tried it and its not the most convenient but if you like open source and willing to put the effort its another option.

just sharing

I've been using SplashID for years. It works across all my devices and does what I need. I also have a lifetime subscription for it that I picked up about 5 years ago for £40

I moved to Strongbox from Safeincloud because of these differentiators (for me anyway) : Strong box uses open source Keepass AND it uses Autofill with Safari so no browser extension required. I dont really need PC support so I am happy to give that up.
I have chosen KeePass2 as the database. The database is in iCloud and is synced via iCloudDrive and backed up via Mac using timeMachine.

I can use the following apps (all open source), feel free to mix and match or alternate:
Mac:
- KeePassXC
- KeeWeb
- Strongbox

IOS:
- Strongbox
- Keepassium

Windows:
- KeePassXC

Looks like a nice app but on the site seems to be a subscription model app, so better stay with 1password for us if we will pay subscription

can you elaborate more on this, how does this work? How do they sync off each other? Is KeePass file format like .html for browsers that will be read 100% by each app no issue? what about customized fields?

Are they like just different interfaces for the same file-the passwords db- and work using a standard?

May be worth giving splashdata your email in case they do the lifetime subscription again.

Local sync is an option though. I used to have SplashID long ago, with no issues that I recall; switched to 1Password because of all its acclaim.

Hmm...

So basically you picked a standardized form for the vault (database), and stored it somewhere. Then you left it up to the UI of choice to access it on whatever necessary platform. My two questions:
  1. Can that database be stored anywhere? meaning, not in a cloud service?
  2. Does each individual app try to write its own type of data to the database that the other apps can't read? For example, there are some fields and formatting issues between Pages and Numbers vs. Excel and MS Word when you write out a .xlsx or .docx formatted file. Does that happen between the applications on MacOS, Windows, and IOS?
If the answer to #2 is no, then this would probably be the best way for a lot of people to go, as the backend is standardized and there is full seamless compatibility across all applications without any formatting or missing fields.

All apps can be used for free and some additionally by subscription or one-time payment for more convenience.

The database is always KeePass2. The different apps use custom fields that are KeePass standard. This is quite simple field name and field content. These can be read and written by the other apps.

You can save the database anywhere. Online or offline. Synchronize manually or via cloud. I store it on Mac in iCloud Drive. Then it is automatically synchronized with the IOS-Devices and always backed up by TimeMachine.

Try it out!

Customers advised to reset all stored passwords....See this from bleeping computer Password manager hacked .... late April 2021.
"attackers compromised the app's update mechanism to deliver malware in a supply-chain attack after breaching its networks" ...
....an example of why centralising your passwords on a developers server, with many thousands of others, is sub-optimal.

I really hope 1Password reads this and reconsiders local network. Has everyone here reached out to them? I've contacted them via email, their focus, and Twitter on this subject. I mean, why not? Aren't these companies perfect for ransomware attacks?

The videos I've seen where they interviewed the 1P devs/leads- they're pretty resolute on this and I bet it's coming from upstairs (higher up). And yes, they are definitely a target but the cloud is fairly secure, especially if they're using AWS or another mainstream cloud service. That's the advantage of a cloud service - cloud companies do most the security, patches, latest whatever.... vs having an underpaid/nonexistent IT department try to keep a Windows Server 2012 R2 updated, or whatever.

That said, that still makes their weakest link a big risk. We all know how companies underfund or flat out ignore IT/security. Hire a new cheap employee, give that new cheap employee access they shouldn't have cuz ... it's easier to do that than pay a competent person a realistic salary .... bam. Issues - despite being on a modern cloud service (Azure, Google, AWS, etc).

Everything in the name of profit. Who cares if you have a breach? Apologize, move on, continue what you're doing - rake in the $.

I am probably becoming an old fart but I've seen it too many times in my life - get rid of the highly skilled expensive people in the name of profit and then wonder why product/service suffers. Happens way too often. Lowest bidder ftw.

Or you could do it the Apple way, keep the expensive people and see products and services suffer. ;)

I'll never know what it is like to have to put my money in Ireland to avoid... ok I'll stop. LOL.

On topic (cough)... I'm loving KeePassXC and iCloud :D Been using it for weeks now. That and keychain - seems to be doing everything I need it to do for now.
