I waited & a few minutes ago was able to connect to the iTunes store. The phone works now & I have the new App Store icon!

You have given me hope. I knew there would be success out there. (And I knew I would be doing any work until I get this thing going again... Sorry boss).

I updated my 1Gen this morning. I got the phone reactivated, app store, apps loaded that I bought yesterday. I just can't access my phone via iTunes to make any changes to it's content. It syncs, but I can't add/delete music, videos, etc.

It shows my phone under devices, but no menus under there. The screen on the right is white with iPhone in the middle and it's trying to access the iTunes store. Sigh. Another wonderful technology day.

They can't activate them in the Apple Stores either or ATT stores, it's not just the 1st gen phones, it's all of em...

The severs just couldn't handle all the traffic at the same time. It's like trying to connect on Christmas morning, just doesn't happen.

So, finally I update the firmware to the official 2.0 available via iTunes and now it's destroyed the phone (1st gen)
All I have is the SOS screen for emergency use only, iTunes doesn't even recognise the phone (gets stuck in an 'Accessing iTunes Store' loop) so I can't even do a Restore again.

HELP !!!!

Now getting a "We could not complete your iTunes Store reques: unknown error occurred (-9838)

I'm having the exact same problem...

I had this and it was trying to access the store for more than 10 minutes. I could sync (restore backup), but i didn't have any options in itunes (latest update, restore, choose your music etc).

Just waited 10 mins and it all of a sudden connected and now i have the options etc.

Just be patient.

Best,
N

Stupid -4 error again... Way to go Apple/ATT.

It's funny there was no problem when they charged my credit card. That went very smooth.

IMHO should have let first gen users update to v2.0 day before so less demand on servers with new activations with 3G. So simple cant believe some high flying numpty on a whopping huge salary (no names given) hadnt thought of potential problems.

I've gotten both the -4 error and the -9338. I called support and was told the servers are swamped. I needed to be wait it out... I hope this clears itself soon. I have a bricked phone at the moment.:(

Thanks for that update. This is the problem most of us are having. I'm totally bricked though, are you? I mean, I can't sync or restore or anything.. all I have in iTunes is a white page with the word iPhone in the middle...

I'd restore to my previous config and update in a week if I could. No I'm just stuck. Guess no work calls today (iphone is primary biz phone) lol.

well first of all, if you have a phone that gets to the emergency screen you DONT have a brick. You have a non activated phone. Just like every time you upgraded the phone in the past, when it rebooted it connected to itunez and verified the phone and reactivated it properly. Now everyone in their brother is trying to activate their new 3g models and apples servers are showing the stress. So you are in the same boat as the new 3g owners that cant activate their new phones.

What apple should have done? they should have released 2.0 a few days ago that way the server load would mainly be the 3g people rather than everyone that has an iphone both old and new that may be upgrading and/or activating a new phone.

I did the reconnect/reconnect/reconnect trick from the other thread and finally got upgraded. Total time waiting in "virtual line", 1.5 hours.

Update 2.0 on original iphone gave and error "-4"

My phone went completely through the update until: restoring firmware and then the error message appeared! Now my older phone is a brick. I would wait a day or two before downloading and installing iPhone 2.0!

Okay, so my phone is active. I can make and take calls. It wiped out all of my information on it. No contacts, text messages or even music on it. It is still sitting in the cradle waiting for Itunes recognize it so I can load it up again. :D At least I have a working phone...

Apple

You would think that one of the most powerful companies in the world would be ready for the release of the upgrade to the most popular electronic device this century... but i guess that is too much to ask for.

The thing that annoys me, is that there is no word from apple.

This is blatently a worldwide problem, and something they must be aware of, and yet there is NO info on their website...

Success....

It finally worked, put all my information back on my phone and we are in business. That was a short 5 hours, but I am happy it is working now. Good luck to all those waiting.
