I just got a new 2.2 machine as a replacement for a refurb 2.16 that had a slightly flaky superdrive. The machine is perfect. Leopard is still a little flaky, but not nearly as bad as a windows machine (but not as stone reliable as my Jaguar/Tiger machines)
FWIW, I got mine after Leopard was announced and it still had a drop in disc.
In some way that's an advantage. If I were to do it all over again, I'd use Tiger until the next major fix comes along for Leopard.

True. Most of us wouldn't know the difference between a run of the mill type of Apple, and a truly great one. Most of the macc owners I talk to / hear from are deeply satisfied with their Apple products. When a problem rears its disgusting head, all the known universe will hear about the vile lashing that is due in Cupertino. Have we forgotten what we were looking for from our computers when we looked in the Apple direction?

Agreed, this web site is self-selecting. People who visit computer forums do so because they have a bitch, or because they are computer "enthusiasts" and have a substantial amount of ego wrapped up in their computer choice. IMHO, the majority of computer users are like my wife, who sits down at her G4 Powerbook every day and just expects it to work. And it does. She doesn't obsess about every little glitch, glare or scratch, and doesn't shriek on some online forum about how betrayed she feels if the Powerbook happens to hiccup. She just uses it and it works fine. I offered to pick out a nice MacBook Pro for her, but she's fine with the one she has. If and when it no longer meets her needs, she'll just go get another one and if Mac disappoints her, she'll get a PC. But she won't log onto this site and whine about it, nor will she log on and praise Apple for making a great computer. She doesn't care - she just wants a functional, reliable and friendly interface to the internet, email, photos, and word processing, and I'm pretty sure that's representative of the majority of computer users, but definitely not the majority of MacRumors forums members.

I bought my 2.4 MBP in August. Best Purchase, and Best Computer I have ever Owned.

Had the same screen problem - sent it back for repair, got an LG screen instead on a Samsung, but still had that persistent yellowing problem at the bottom of the screen. I'll be driving down to the Apple store tomorrow to see if they can replace the screen *again*. I would have taken it back and gone with another manufacturer such as dell if I wasn't so in love with the design of both the hardware & the software that apple produces. I really don't want to go back to windows after having leopard for a couple weeks.

Did you actually try to calibrate the screen? I know that the yellowing problem is a display problem but it might just remove 90% of the tint by making a proper calibration.

And also you seem like one of those customers I wouldn't want for the life of me.
If you had received a good screen, no tape on the box, you would probably have been pissed by some aluminium impurity taking up 0.1" on the bottom of the casing, forcing you to really start up the ALL CAPS text yet again.

WTF is wrong with you? Because he wants his money worth, you wouldn't want to have him as a customer???

He is within his right, legaly and morally to complain.

OP: take the f*****ing machine back and file a complaint about the situation and the store manager's rude behavior with Apple Customers Relations +1 800 275-2273.

We toss around numbers like "95% good", but keep in mind Apple would be in an absolute total melt-down panic if they ever got anywhere NEAR a 5% out of box failure rate.

The actual rate is far lower, and many posts in this thread have adequately explained the "adverse selection phenomenon" that explains the over-representation of problem machines on forums like this.

While your complaints are valid, don't come on here to spout that the macbook pro 2.4 is a waste of money because your first computer happened to be a lemon... and it's great you gave apple the benefit of the doubt, but why not just open the box in the store and check it out? Why not stop after the initial obviousness of the screen being bad and go back and return it? You didn't have to spend an hour to see that the screen was bad.

I know your complaints are valid, but spouting that all mbps are bad because of your bad experience is just plain bothersome.

Why don't you take it back and get a replacement, which they will happily give you after your problems. You can even open it in the store and make sure you get one that is all you wished for. Maybe even with leopard preinstalled, although, I think having one with tiger as the original operating system may be nice, so you could go back to it if you so wish, or stick with it for a while if you wanted to (some people like doing that).

And walla, everyone wins. Apple's quality may have dropped a bit lately, but like someone said in another forum, they are using new tech in the LED screens that a lot of places aren't using, yes they shoulda fixed the problem, but the ones that people do get that are good (which seems tobe quite a bit ... and more and more everyday, as they are weeding out th ebad screens now) are wonderful. My 2.2 is amazing. (and it was a refurb... totally suggest the refurbs to save some money and get a machine that was checked over multiple times already)

Don't give up after one bad trip to the store, and if you do, don't come on here complaining and spouting about how crappy apple has become and how all mbps are a waste of money.

and yes, the box was clearly open because they put the drop in disc in, you probably should have figured that out once you saw that there was a drop in disc in the box. :p

I never open the box of anything I buy at the store. I buy in full faith after research and after making the decision with company X or company Y.

Apple should do something about its QC, that's the end of the story.

Spot on. As the only 'computer enthusiast' in the household it's clear to see the divide between people on MacForums and your average Joe. All they want is to sit down, switch on and have it work and are not fussed about how many MHz faster this processors clock speed is or how much 'RAM' it has, as long as it looks pretty and works they're not arsed *trying not to generalise too much*
One other thing, why do people spell Mac as MAC, it's not an acronym...

If I were you, and I'd feel the same way about getting a crappy Mac, I'd just go return it for a different one.

Sure it sucks to get a bad one, but that doesn't mean every single other one is bad.

And the problems on the boards, like other people have said, just seem like a lot because the people who DO have problems post, whereas the ones who don't are silent.

Just stick it out until you get a good one. You won't regret it.

Of course, that's up to you. But that's what I'd do. Don't be neurotic, just get another one. lol

So i went down to the store thinking i am being too demanding etc.
I talked to andrew teh store manager explained once again my situation.
Is like he was shaking his head to agree with me, but did not really hear what I was telling him. His concentration was on how the sticker was removed and he will have to charge me a restocking fee.

When i told him about the yellow, pink and distorted images he did not believe me he sent me over to the genius bar where i waited like 40-50 minutes because they where swamped with appointments. I waited patiently for my turn then finally he takes a look at my computer and for some reason the screen is working fine. No yellow/ pink tint it is sharp. So of course he thinks im lying they point blank tell me theres nothing they can do
I can return it if im not happy with it but they will charge me a 15% restocking fee blah blah....when by a miracle just when it seemed i was going to loose teh fight low and behold the screen turns yellow.....So they take a look with what seemed like embarrased faces and they agree to exchange it....

everything is being processed and the cashier tells me by accident they refunded teh credit card and that i will have to re-purchase the computer again. What can i do i really want this led beauty so i decide to purchase it at this point i have 2 2600 + charges on my credit card. Whatever i moved on went home opened it and guess what-same problem same issues i called right away and i explained to him i was having the same problem. Drove back to the store went through the whole process i get a new laptop once again
and he brings one out he opens it we test it out and that same computer had the same problem...so at this point what am i to do? Reports OVER THE INTERNET ARE THAT ONLY 1% suffer from this symptons so how in the world i fall into that 1% 3 TIMES?

After all this trouble and dilema i decided to give apple another shot
but this time by ordering a bto with a 2.6 processor so that i know it it will not be old stock.

Here is to hoping everything works out.

I came here not to "bitch"-"troll" or spew none sense i came here to talk....
share my experience with apple...i never thought i would go through so much hassle to get a working laptop thats all....People are forgetting what apple use t ostand for and why we decide to spend so much money on their hardware when we can get so much more in the windows world for less.

I went for apple wanting that out of the box it just works experience but that was not the case

Hi,

I feel sorrow for your troubles, man...

But I don't think though that Apple is going down or is producing waste en masse. Apple simply wouldn't be growing like it's doing last time. That's just impossible. You could buy a defective laptop from any manufacturer. Nobody's perfect. Get over it. That's not the end of the world.

Edited: sorry, haven't read your last post. That's extremely bad luck...

I read a similar post by a different user in a different thread a few days ago. They go in the store, and open box after box of MBPs, and each one has the yellow screen. Apple QC is down the drain.

Good luck with the 2.6 you've ordered. I recommend getting a refurbished one if that one turns out to be more of the same crap from Apple. At least with a refurb, you *know* it was double-checked by human beings for crappy screens/etc before being shipped out.

Something else...

Apple Store employees are trained to deny, deny, deny. As in, the burden of proof is not on Apple to service the consumer, but on the consumer to wrench that service from Apple. Even with a known problem that's been persisting for *months* - the yellow screens, the dying batteries, the gouging hard drives, the sticky keys, the logic boards, etc etc - the staff is trained to pretend you were the *first* person to approach them with the problem. So you really have to push and stand up for yourself, or else they will lie through their teeth and pretend they've never heard of the defect before. It's quite shameful to watch. Obviously, the directions for such deception have to come straight from Apple, because this is a consistent pattern at Apple Stores. It's something to keep in mind for people who have problems; the employees will try to put the blame on you, or to deny the problem exists, until and unless you show them there in the store that the computers are bug-ridden.

This is another thing. When you spend twice as much for an Apple computer as you would for a Windows computer with equivalent specs, you expect it to work. You don't expect to have to return it three or four times to find a bug-free model, and to be told by snot-nosed fanboys to "suck it up!" and take it from Apple. That's absolute rubbish. I do sympathize with you. No one deserves to go through this kind of crap - especially from a computer manufacturer whose catchphrase is that their products (unlike those of their competitors) "just work".

Wow, every other MacBook Pro had the issues? That's ridiculous. I didn't think it would be that bad.

I wonder if it's the newer Santa Rosa ones that have more issues than the previous ones, because I got mine last December and it's been totally fine.

Hmm.... well, good luck on the 2.6. I hope it doesn't have those problems!

The 15" MBP has had the yellowish-screen-issues since they put in the LED backlighting. That's what I'd like them to fix.

You are the about the, what 2% of people that have had issues? All computers have issues dude, you got a bad apple, so just return it! Ask for new one, open it up in the store, test it, and leave!! If you are that mad, then just get a Windows computer so that you can just complain about that one too!

Mine is perfect

My 2.4 MBP has been perfect so far. No flaws, blemishes, or other issues. It has been the best mobile computing experience I've had in years.

Caveat, since updating to Leopard 10.5.1, my Logitech V270 mouse causes a kernel panic if I close the lid and sleep while it is attached. Oddly, it only happens with this mouse, not my BT keyboard or mighty mouse.

So today i decide i want to dive back into macworld.
I am currently using a thinkpad t61 but lately been doing a lot of
graphic design and when i ordered the thinkpad i opted for a dedicated x3100 video chipset.

So i take a drive down to my local apple store choose th 15" 2.4 model.

To make it short when I got home I noticed they were 2 tapes ,one slit across and one on top to cover the other one. So my first impression is "ITS USED"

I am pissed at the fact that I just paid retail and I got a used computer. So I call the store speak with the manager and he explains to me in a rude way by the way that all macbook pros had to be opened to INSTALL leopard.
I did not buy the story so I called lincoln road apple store. And, I asked the same question the lady on the phone tells me theres no way that would happen because the latest shipments have leopard installed from factory.

She puts me on hold comes back and tells me that it appears that all macbook pros where opened for leopard I SAID OK blah blah hung up the phone opened the computer and what do i get TIGER INSTALLED.
I said FINE giving apple the benefit of the doubt AGAIN.I commence to install leopard
and low and behold i get a YELLOW TINT accross the screen i am upset at this point. I ONCE AGAIN give apple the benefit of the doubt and install leopard thinking maybe the video dirvers need to be installed (i know that was not the case been working with computers for over 12 years just being hopeful)

The computer finishes the installation and I finally get to see leopards intro screen but wait a minute is BLURRY...
I get to the registration screen where you input all the info and the font is unreadable distorted, out of focus type of problem.

I SAID ONCE AGAIN MAYBE WHEN I GET TO THE DESKTOP IT WILL FIX ITSELF (now keep in mind my ocd is already on active mode at this point i think the computer was used, returned and re-wrapped so im not happy but im willing to fight my ocd and move on) I get to the desktop finally and it still looks like crap
I move the lcd screen back and POOF it is clear the font is sharp just like other awesome apple screens im happy but it did not last long within 10 seconds the screen goes into a purple tint then fixes itself then goes back to a yellow tint fixes itself and then the tint is gone but the font and the screen is distorted again. I gave apple the benefit of the doubt more then 1 time in a span of 1hr and as much as i hate to say this. APPLE 2007 SUCKS

I knew 10 years ago that once apple gained marketshare the quality level will drop and i was right.

Take this as a warning because it sounds like their pushing the fish thats about to turn. Theres an agenda gooing on at apple right now and is not in favor of us the consumers. Might be updates forthcoming and their pushing all the stock they have or apple products just are made up of cheap components and are no longer the quality we use to get.

Going back to the store tomorrow to get my money back i know they will try everything in their power to charge me the re-stocking fee but i will not go down without a fight. Just really dissapointed is like apple is wasting so much time on otehr stuff that leave their main busines on the sideburner.

By the way to get in the apple store i had to wait 15 minutes because accroding to them they are "trying to improve customer shopping" they should concentrate more on ironing out perks on a 2500 dollar laptop.

I'm sorry but I couldnt read through all of that crap but I felt like I had to respond. Its unfortunate that you got a dud model and paid full price for it but thats why you get to return it when crap like that happens. I'm sorry but I would of flat out returned the thing with any flaws, it would of floored me to see tiger on it pre-installed (which I was floored when we bought our iMac 24" from bestbuy and no leopard or anything). So sorry about your loss there tiger but either you're a pc user gone awry and want to raise enough hell on here to convince people not to buy the 15" mbp or Apple all together or you just like cheese with your whine.. I'd hate to be behind you at a Starbucks and have them mess up your order :)

Seriously though I'm not trying to act like a jerk I just hate people that whine all over cyberspace over some product they got that was obviously a RMA and should of been returned instead of uhh ok maybe this will fix it, no ok maybe that will fix it.. ok no that doesnt fix it so I'll go whine on thee forums.
