Yeah it seems it was a conflict with the BT and the Wifi card. I've now removed the wifi card and everything is working perfectly.

Thanks to both of you for the help!

Please tell what exactly model of wifi card it is, it will help future readers. Few people in this thread experienced same problem as you did. Perhaps it would be good to add this info to the OP.

Ok, so i need to follow the Hennesie guideline. Thanks

Ok i'm on step 13. I type in this terminal cmd: sudo chflags nouchg /OS X Base System/Installer/System/Library/CoreServices/boot.efi

It said this was improper use of sudo and could cause trouble. It wanted my password to continue so i aborted. Is this normal and should i go ahead and type in my password?

Thanks

Sudo is short for "substitute user do". It gives you root abilities. It is not improper use but, it warns that if you improperly use the sudo command you could mess something up. Just enter your password and proceed.

Replace "Installer" with the name of your thumb drive. All commands in the guide are under the assumption that you follow the naming in the guide.

Ok i made it thru the guide. Now when i restart with the option key there is the thumb drive disk and an refi boot disk.

Clicking the thumb drive just goes to the apple logo grey screen.

Clicking the efi drive goes to Mac Utilities but no option to install Yosemite.

Thanks

You should be choosing the volume that is the name of your thumb drive. How long did you wait on the grey Apple logo screen, it can take a few minutes to boot from a USB 2.0 flash drive.

The name of the thumb drive is not showing as an option. It shows OS X Base System.

Thanks

When you restored the BaseSystem.dmg to the USB stick it renames the volume to "OS X Base System". See section 2 of the guide, steps 6-8. The guides assumes you renamed the USB stick to "Installer" in step 8. The remaining terminal commands in the guide are written with that in mind. It is much easier to use volume names without spaces. If you have spaces then you will need to either put that volume name in quotation marks or you will need precede each space with a \ so it would look like this OS\ X\ Base\ System.

Please make sure you followed ALL of the steps in the guide. Especially if you are not familiar with terminal at all.

Ok I didn't do that with the name at step 8. Should i erase the thumb drive and start anew?
I could pull out the plist changes and the distribution file and save those for the next try?

Thanks

If you feel you did everything right then there is no need to start over and you can just rename it. If it is not booting from your USB drive then it may be a problem with the USB drive and you might want to try creating an 8GB partition on a HDD that can be installed internally.

In the finder under Devices the thumb drive is named OS X Base System. But in Disk Utility the thumb drive is named16 gb Sandisk cruzer media and the partition is called OS X Base System. Is that normal? If so how do i change the name from Sandisk in Disk utility?

Thanks again for all your help

You can't change the device name, only the volume name. If you are seeing "OS X Base System" on the boot screen after holding option then you are seeing the thumb drive and no name changing is necessary. I am more so trying to figure out why it won't boot. How long does it stay on the gray screen with the apple logo? Or how long have you waited before doing a hard reboot?

The front port should be fine, always worked on mine. You don't need to let it sit for 30 min but maybe try a little longer although I think there is either an issue with the USB drive itself or something in the process when you were setting it up.

You will need to copy each line. Just follow the guide and read each step. It is very clear and it does work but does require some basic terminal knowledge. You might be better off trying the SFOTT method which automates the guide.

Security Update 2015-003

Hello,
does anybody know if Security Update 2015-003 breaks anything? Maybe I am a bit fearful but restarting my Macbook Air took longer than usually after applying an update.

Thanks

I just updated on a Mac Pro 2,1 using the PikerAlpha's and Hennesie2000 method boot.efi and everything went fine.
Also iPhoto has a update for the upcoming Photos.app on the library for the transition to it.

The wireless card that was in the MP was

Model No: AR5BXB6
Serial No: 6F74506X3U4GA
AP ID: 001CB3B1B9D5

Thanks!
I'm not surprised seeing Atheros based card. These are most troublesome and non-reliable AP cards ever. If you want to get your wifi back just grab any 2 antennae BCM9432x card and it will work OK. Forget USB ones, go mPCIe.

wanting to update to 10.10

Hi one and all. I have some questions. I am running 10.7.5 on a MacPro 2,1. It has 4 disks, each 750 Gb. I also have the 8 core unit running at 3 GHZ. I have the 32 bit EFI, so I am stuck. However, I did get USB 3 running so that is good. Both internal DVDs drives went bad, or wont's work, but I have externals that do goo.
I would like to jump unto 10.10. I see that it might be able to be done, but I need to change my video card I guess. I have the Nvidia Quadro FX. I do not know how to upgrade, but will try and follow the methods. But I do know I cannot boot from a USB stick or disk, so how do I do that? Also, I would like to replace an internal disk with a SSD disk and then use the one that I replace with the USB 3 or firewire. Or maybe put in a Sata card and use that.
Does anyone see why this would not work and allow me to boot from the SSD card when I upgrade? Or do I have to move everything from my bootable disk to the SSD card, and then do the upgrade? Or do I really upgrade and replace 10.7.5 with 10.10 or do I need a new installation. Any help you can give me would really be appreciated. If anyone has done something like this before I would really like to email you and have you help me.

Thanks for all your efforts, those who are doing this. You are great people.

a couple of questions

I cannot download the yosemite installer because the machine I have is 32 bit efi and when I go to the apple store it says my machine does not support it. I do not have any later macs, so how do I get it?

I also downloaded the yosemite installer zip package from pre patched Piker installer, and unzipped it and it does unzip into dmg. When I click on it to mount it, it does nothing. What am I to do with this file? I don't see any instructions. Am I to copy it over to a flash disk, or is the file bad because it will not open like other dmg files I download.

Any help with someone that has done this before would be nice.
