I did it! It truly wasn't that hard. The biggest pain for me on my 1,1 was upgrading to Lion. After that it was easy, just remember to install the Pike fix. I had an old AMD 6570 laying around that works great with the new OS, the Nvidia GT 610 I had did not. Fully updated Yosemite and this thing is quite fast. I put in 16GB of used ram for $15. Next upgrade might be to 8 cores of Xeon power and a 120gb SSD. I bet this thing would fly well into the future.

That card is natively supported by OS X. Since it is a PC card the port mappings could be different so all ports may not work. Try another port on the card.

What do you mean by try an other port on the card? Do you mean different port lane mapping as per the OS choices, or a different PCIe slot?

I modified the script and Tobyg's package with Pike's fork of boot.efi.
I hope that tobyg won't mind this.

Above steps are no longer needed with updated version. Enjoy!

Credits go to Pike and Tobyg and of course to tiamo, who started this all.
Boot.efi inside the 1st package is black version.

Updated the post with gray version for these who prefer older look.
It's Hennessie's build from post #1616, black is mine from latest version of Pike's sources.

This has worked flawlessly on my brother's 1,1 with Yose. Any chance you have one ready for El Capitan?

Oh yeah! :) thanks

Thanks to everyone who helped with this. Donations will be made... Just successfully upgraded my 2,1 to Yosemite from SL using the custom Piker Alpha bootloader. Worked a treat, though had to bless the USB with a Terminal command and it all worked better when I called the hard drive I was installing on 'installer'.

Haven't updated Yosemite yet but I've installed the yosefix patch.

I can finally backup and sync my iPhone again, as that got borked on Snow Leopard.

All in all, I'm quite stunned that my computer is back in the mix...

Is there no iPhoto with Yosemite? Nothing on the app store either, or will it appear after I update to latest patch?

My computer never restarts properly and hasn't for a while (under snow leopard as well), it just sits there 'breathing' (like the fan is going up and down) and I have to do a hard restart, anyone know what might cause this? trying to run something before restart that is failing?

As I've had some problems trying to upgrade to El Cap with the new branch of boot.efi, I restored the old Yosemite installation and built the latest commit of the Yosemite branch (f738eb).
Here is an archive with the black and grey boot.efis

  • ....copy Pike's EFI32 boot.efi to that drive's /usr/standalone/i386 and /System/Library/CoreServices/ directories overwriting the stock Apple EFI64 boot.efi and repair permissions. That drive should now be bootable on a 2006/2007 Mac Pro, although sometimes it still may need to be blessed in the 2006/2007 Mac Pro.
NOTHING WORKS. I KEEP RUNNING INTO A BRICK WALL NO MATTER WHAT METHOD I TRY. I need someone to prove to me that It can be done. I swear my luck is bad and I am cursed!!!

Im confused. I could find the file under system/library/coreservices. but I cannot copy the boot file over. I also cannot find the usr/standalone/i386 directory. I cant see the usr folder. right now I am booted on my mac pro 1 1 in a mavericks partition trying to restore the boot files for yosemite (on another harddrive) because it stopped booting.

Id rather just install el capitan but the only method that worked for me was the "pre patched pikers yosemite" Is there a pre patched El Capitan anywhere out there? Or can somebody clarify how to install El Capitan with the other methods? I have a macbook pro that I was going to download the El Capitan Install DMG .

For one the folder is /usr/standalone/i386. It is a hidden folder that you can get to by typing that path into the Finder Go To Folder window.

Take a moment and breathe.

It is super duper easy if you just take your time and pay attention. Make sure to get your boot.efi from Pike's blog. Has latest one.

Right click on it and note the size, IIRC it is 316K or so now.

To see the /usr/standalone/i386 folder, just click on desktop to select Finder, and use "Go to folder". Drag the disk into that window (assuming you are in another OS) and this should place a path like "Volumes/HARDDRIVE" in there, just add /usr/standalone/i386 at the end and it will take you right to the contents of the folder.

If something is locked, right click on it and get information, then unclick the "locked" box.

The absolutely CRUCIAL part that everyone buggers up is verifying that they actually switched the file. You can run a checksum on it, but I find that size is good enough. The "real" 64 bit one is 605K or so, the Pike one is a little more than half of that, 316K. If the one in the usr folder is 605K, guess what? You didn't replace it.

Read my guide linked at the top of the first post. It explains everything in detail and gives all the commands you need.
