The smell of fresh electronics, awesome!
I'm guessing you mean a somewhat "dry" smell that's best described as electrical and metal.

Of course, there's the odd chance your MP flew over on the same flight as a couple of stressed out Jaks in mating season...

I don't know why you're making fun of Master Chief's post.
There have been reports in the past regarding bad smells from certain Mac Pros >>>

Because:
a) I hadn't heard about the linked incident.
b) People often get worried by the smell of fresh electronics as it is very sharp and distinct.
c) I like my days with a bit of levity in them.

Satisfied?

I just received my 2 x 2.93-GHz quad-core and we are setting up my rig, but it smells awful, like something is going bad. I think it comes from the power supply (keeping my fingers crossed). Has anyone else noticed the bad odor?
Such smells are usually normal, given the various coatings used in the manufacture of electronics getting hot for the first few months. Things like the varnish used on the copper windings for transformers/inductors, conformal coatings, solder mask, flux residue missed during cleaning,... It's a rather stinky affair. :p

Sounds normal. The previous Mac Pros used to stink when new. I set enough of them up to know

He described the smell as "awful, like something is going bad".
You wouldn't describe the smell of fresh electronics like that.
Here's a link to a discussion from last year >
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8332927

I wasn't aware of previous odor issues, but I had to switch my MP off because everyone entering my office asked me to open a window (Apple said that it might smell bad / produce burn-in odors the first few hours). Not unlikely, and thus I asked if others experienced the same kind of bad odor ;)

No smells with mine. Of course, it's been unseasonably cold and my central heat has been circulating the air pretty well, but I've been sticking my head back behind the machine hooking up firewire devices and haven't noticed any odors.

WonderSausage,
Thanks for all the posts regarding your new machine! Two quick questions: Does the ATI card's fan seem louder than the computer itself? Also, does the computer seem to generate a lot of heat?
Many thanks...

Yes... sort of. you can only use one 4870, but you can get a 4870 and a GT 120.

I don't think that you could get a 4870 and TWO GT 120 while staying under the power draw.

Not true, talked to Apple about it, you can have 1 4870 and 2 GT 120's in the same machine without power draw

Would anyone be so kind to send me the ATINDRV.kext (found in /system/library/extensions) as well as doing an ioreg dump (just start terminal and type: "ioreg -l -w0 -p IODeviceTree > dump.txt")?

The dump.txt would appear in /users/[yourname].

PM me if you have this information :)

I would like to know this as well, are the ati 4870 cards really loud?

Maybe it has something to do with individual sensitivity to smell. Every Apple computer I've bought (even the mac pro 2.66ghz first gen and 2.8ghz 8 core 2nd gen been through 2 of the 2.8ghz model) never smelled bad or had any odor.

Infact it gave me the fresh nostalgic smell of the apple products.

Can we get a photo of the actual CPUs under the heat sinks? I want proof they're not soldered in.

Here's a graph of all the unique systems that have been posted so far. If you don't see your Mac Model listed here please run Cinebench10.1 (aka "Cinebench10") and post your results! A more complete list might be fun! :)

Be sure to include the Model and the CPU speed. Like "2009 Mac Mini 3.5" or whatever. ;)

Thanks!
