Just another guess: Have you ever upgraded the boot rom firmware to the latest version? To do this install High Sierra including the latest upgrades and patches from 2020. Then your system is ready to install Mojave or Catalina.
Check @dosdude1’s installation requirements for Catalina on machines natively supporting High Sierra.
Latest bootrom is done 87.0.0.0 ...

"Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later."

Yes, this lines up with what many have found. While TDM is available on the Quadro cards with OpenCore, it doesn't work well or at all in later OS's. Personally, I keep a small APFS volume with HS installed "just in case." Might be worth sacrificing ~16GB should you ever want to use the feature. A pity it was killed off...

Yeah, I said this way back when before OC was released. Mojave and Catalina will eventually KP, but that's if you can get your iMac back to the login screen after having a black screen. I usually use the sleep keyboard command and then wake the iMac back up.

I wonder if I change the SMBIOS/board-ID again to an iMac that supports proper Target Display Mode will fix escaping TDM correctly. I'll just edit AppleSNBFramebuffer for maybe a 2013/14 iMac.

The 2011 iMac display backlight system uses pulse-width-modulation (PWM) to control backlight intensity. A PWM control signal is generated within the logic board-video card circuit and routed to the PWM input on the backlight board. The PWM frequency is 13KHz and the pulse height is 3.25V.

Great info, thanks. Do you know how the backlight-on (BL_ON) line is used? I'm converting a 2010ish 27" iMac with the dreaded GPU failure into a monitor. I gutted it but kept the LCD, PSU, and inverter board. I bought a cheap LCD driver kit off eBay, but reviews say that the brightness is sub-par. I'm powering it with the original PSU, and indeed the brightness range is pretty limited and doesn't look great.

I have the PWM and BL_ON input wires to the inverter board stripped and ready to go. I bought a PWM generator with variable rate and duty cycle, so armed with the above info I should be good to go... except I don't know how to tell the stock inverter board to turn the backlight on. What do I do with the BL_ON wire?

Thanks for any insight!

So, if i understand correctly with an imac with GTX765 flashed with @Nick [D]vB VBIOS, OC and high sierra is possible to get TDM , right?

Sorry mate, but then you likely made another mistake on your trip to Catalina. The patcher and OS can be installed. Installation and reboot in the middle took quite a while. In general I would appreciate using a signature to reflect the system you are working with or a more detailed description in advance. Otherwise all this becomes more guessing than helping...

I have a question (2 actually): i have an iMac 27 mid 2011, with a 780m card, flashed with custom VBios from Nick.
I can use Netflix, prime vídeo and HBO with safari and with Friendly streaming on high Sierra (1080p), but that won't work on latest patched Catalina (only with new Edge browser, for instance, but only 720p)
Plan A: If i use opencore bootloader (with my current configuration) would it help?
Plan B: is there another solution, ideas...?
Thanks...

Currently OpenCore is of no use with your BIOS and your card. What makes you believe that it might help? Only AMD Radeon Pro WX41(N)0 and WX7100 and Nvidia Quadro K2100M and K1100M cards have any benefits right now.
I cannot help regarding your video problems, sorry.

Well it is not a problem... I read something about it. To see streaming protected content (like Netflix), the plugins and the drm capacity are the Key, my understandment...
Friendly streaming it is a good tool to have all streaming services um One place. It works on a MacBook pro 2019, but we're talking about a much more recent machine, with official Catalina support...

Hello to everybody, I'm waiting for my K2100M :

I read a lot this thread before making my first post. I must admit that it is not so straightforward to follow (although I'm quite trained to computer HW modifications and upgrades). I will come back to you soon with more precise questions.

I have a iMac 27inch Mid 2011 with already a few mods and repairs (the most scary I did was removing the smudges between backlight panel and LCD : do not hope to do that again soon...).

I would like to flash my K2100M with the CH341 method (prefer the old school way) : any reference and ebay link in order to choose the correct one with all needed clip / cables ?

Thanks in advance and talk to you soon.

Yes you can buy this from eBay :

I'll try to see from this interesting forum where to buy components and learning how to upgrade my GPU and CPU.

Do you have Whatever green and LILU installed it *could* help with HDCP issues, which i think this is.

I tried to use opencore, follow the tutorial, deselected the first to lines (lilu and whatevergreen) opencoreconfigurator (on kernel), because i apply this to get working sleep/wake and enable Intel quicksynk.
Boot, select Catalina loader, choose Catalina to boot... And i only ser Apple logo, no progresso bar... Tried with lilu and whatevergreen enabled, get the progresso bar until the midle, then the iMac just reboots... 😓

You should read my instructions closely. I say ONLY to deselect the first two if you have installed them before (Whatever.kext and Lilu.kext) to avoid kernel panic problems. Otherwise, you can keep them checked.

According to some information in a post from highvoltage12v, it is better to run the KEXTS from the OpenCore instead of the OS. I have been meaning to update the guide with that info.

Cheers!

You have to deselect everything what you had installed before. There can only be one way to activate a kext: install or inject - but not both. Since you have a 2011 I assume you had already installed all kext from @highvoltage12v’s list of sleep kext. Deselect all these except the ones you want to activate additionally.

Since you deselected Lilu and Whatevergreen what is the goal of all this?

I tried both ways, just in case... ;-)

If on the 780M with beta 3, you need to use the Faking_backlight config from a few pages back https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2011-imac-graphics-card-upgrade.1596614/post-28321843

If whatever green and LILU are installed to S*/L*/E you now need to remove them as there will be duplicates.

I uninstall lilu and whatevergreen to replace original settings.
I try to use the fake backlight, so, everything on opencloverconfigurator (kernel) selected from lily, to the fake backlight.
It doesn't work, boot to a withe screen with apple logo, no progress bar.
This is not a big deal... everything else works quite nice. I don't want to give you guys to much trouble, and I'm just a "humble last place newbie" compared to some of you, that are the real gurus... ;-)
