Hello to all. I have not visited this forum for a long time. Today I installed macOS Catalina 10.15.5 on my iMac 27 "2011, but it only loads when I press the option button, if I don’t click on it, the screen is black and nothing happens. Am I missing something or is it something wrong?
You are missing the docs...
Probably the black screen issue known and solved and documented in post #1 on page #1.

Just a suggestion, an issue i've found in macs fan control is that it starts up when the user logins. Unfortunately me and my wife had two accounts. Everything works as expected if i login and than we switch to her account. Unfortunately sometime she forgets to login into my account ( and it's a little a pain had to ... ) and fans starts to spin at maximum speed. Do you know a mac fan control that starts at boot time instead of login time ? I always used hdd fan control, but it works only with one sensor, instead i want to control all the tree fans with custom sensor

I do not understand anything. AppleGraphicsControl.kext is installed through Kext Utility, but the display is still black.
The symptoms are so clear that I would assume you picked just the wrong version (Catalina) or the installation was not successful at all. I never use the kext utility, I save the original extension manually and install the patched extensions using the well known terminal commands. The kext utility created one time too often an unbootable or an unusable system.

It says: "Start up on login!" - So simply log in into her account, start up Mac Fan Control using the same settings and configure there startup on login, too. You have to do it with every single account on your iMac. Unfortunately the settings are stored somewhere in the personal space, maybe the commercial version offers more comfort.

Still searching for a system utility starting up on boot automatically controlling the fans without needing a user land application.

The following is an vbios ROMs for: Nvidia Quadro K4100M

K4100M
N15E-Q3-A2
MXM-B (3.0) bus interface, TDP 100W
The ROM is again based on Nick[D]vB's ROMs. All credit goes to him for his incredible work.
I used @tgaillar method to secure the card to a 3-pipe heatsink on the 27” 2011 iMac.
I used @xanderon technique to flash the ROM.

I am NOT a fan of Opencore. I don’t like using it. I refuse to use it.
I will admit, it seems to be the only way right now to solve certain problems which I’m working on, namely the kp when the AGDC plug-in is invoked.
Boot menu is functional.
I have not had a chance to test it fully, but I can confirm brightness control will work with Opencore on at least High Sierra 10.13.6; no Lilu/WEG. You will likely need the patched AppleGraphicsControl.kext by @highvoltage12v after the 5-2020 security update and for higher version OS installs.

caution: these cards are based on a WSON flash package and therefore are much more difficult to recover from a bad flash for the average user. The EEPROMs are “lead-less” and a CH341a USB programmer cannot engage their pads. Be fair warned.

While it is still experimental, I’ve used it for 4wks now with/without Opencore, no issues. Appreciate @highvoltage12v and @Ausdauersportler for their insights and sharing of ideas.

This card should be added to our database of working GPUs.

Enjoy!

so based on that bios and the benchmark list I assume we have 3-4 strong, fast and powerful cards right now with different status and feature set:

1 - (best): WX7100 - Valley Scores from 25xx to 29xx , ~300€ from China
hard to get, expensive, but very modern, "future proof", native brightness control, boot screens, UEFI Windows 10

2 - K4100M - Valley Scores from 21xx to 25xx, ~150-200€ from US/UK
experimental status, native brightness control, boot screens, lead-less bios chip thus NO CH341a programmer support

3 - GTX 780M - Valley Scores from 20xx to 25xx, ~170-200€ from China
boot screens, performance, BootCamp support but right now NO native brightness control and MAYBE in the future there will be native brightness control, target display mode, and more

4 - GTX 770M - Valley Scores from 20xx to 21xx, ~150-200€ from China
boot screens, performance, BootCamp support but right now NO native brightness control

right now I have a working K2100M and of course I'm eager to bump it to K4100M :p or is even a K5100M possible the same way @nikey22?
thanks everybody involved for the continued effort and work

Hi, I want to look at buying a WX7100. How should I look for it? What special characteristics should we look at? Are there different models? I have an Imac 27 '' 2011. Thank you!

I have done it but I am afraid that when buying I am wrong in some detail and I will lose time in sending a graphic from China with aliexpress. I don't know if there is any differentiation. Is this valid?

On version 10.15.2, everything worked well. Now everything also works well, the only thing you need to boot the system with the button pressed is the option. In the Extension folder this text is present, it seems to me that the text itself is not suitable for 10.15.5.

Since the patch is only a plist edit and described in the original post @highvoltage12v made you may pick the original file one from your 10.15.5 installation and add the patch yourself editing the plist.info file. Using kext utility the original extensions are moved by renaming them. It must be still in the /S*/L*/E* folder with a .bak extension...

No, we (or I) never do this. Buying is your very own decision, only. We/I cannot and will not check cards or offers by photos and promise functionality remotely. There are so many unsuccessful installations with this particular type that I decided not to buy a card from AliExpress at the current price level. I do not take the risk and I do not want to drive you or others into a decision I would not make for myself.

Some Aliexpress sellers added "not for iMac" banners because they are tired of getting cards back because of unexperienced people trying to play with it.

My K2100M/K1100M/K610M success rate is at nearly 100%, for the 780M it drops to 50%. Make your own statistics from the recent published posts.

What do I need to change in plist.info for it to work?

Thank you very much for your answer. I have a success with a 770M that I put in this forum the process that I did to modify the cooling block.

I wanted to see if it was possible to look at one of these new generation but it was not very clear to me success rates and inconveniences.

According to what I have been reading through the forum, the good thing is to look for a model that says "ellesmere" on the board, which identifies in some way that it is the radeon pro model and not fire pro i with the ending 00C

Hi, so I tried to upgrade my iMac 21.5 11' gpu to k2000m, disassemble everything, putting on the GPU and I try to check the led diagnostic before putting on the LCD.

At first there were only one led turn on. I unscrew the logic board and check evry cable at the back in case I miss something, then screw it back on and plug in psu and power cable.

As I was pressing the power button, I saw a spark on my logic board

As you can see on the bottom left 😣

I don't know what went wrong but yeahhh, goodbye logic board

Calm down, first use Contact Cleaner and clean the burned area, then try to look for a short there, maybe is a resistor and you can replace it. Hope u get luck!

Read here, but I am pretty sure that the posted Catalina version works with 10.15.5, too. Before messing around do a reinstall using the terminal commands or follow the post step by step (sudo reboot and even better sudo kcditto before). May be that a single sudo kcditto is quite enough.

Thank you but I think micro soldering is beyond me. I've asked around and the price for the labour to replace the resistor and capacitor is near to a used logic board on eBay. So I might just buy another board and sold this as a faulty unit.

But I'm still curious why there's is no second led on my board, is there a problem with the psu? Would it be a reason the board is shorted?

Hi,

I just got my WX4170 with Bios chip.
I am about to flash it but there are different files that I can use and I am getting confused.

Since I plan to use OpenCore on my iMac 2011 27", I guess I can use the 580X_GOP.rom correct?

Pascal, I did... but I missed the 560 mention for that card.
I did follow the link to the post of Nick and got the archive with all the ROMs.
This post doesn't specify if I have to get the 60W, 75W or GOG rom though.

I guess I am making you lose your time answering me but I would appreciate you simply answer the question. I am not lazy to read.

Also my Rom chip was empty and since the post mention that I could be getting a card with an empty Rom and missing resistors, I guess I must also have missing resistors.
Is there a list of the resistors missing with their values please?

Hi all,

I'm ripping my hair out with an iMac 27" Mid 2011, which I hope you can offer some advice with.

I had the original AMD Radeon HD 6970M which failed and was replaced under the extended recall Apple offered a few years back. A few months ago the screen went black but I could see the screen with a torch. Reading online, I replaced the LCD controller/invert board (as it was relatively cheap!). This didn't help.

I then decided to swap out the GPU (6970M), as I know these are prone to failing and I had already had one replaced in this very unit. Reading on this forum, I opted to purchase a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M 3071MB card, which I installed with not too many issues.

The screen is still black but I cannot even see the screen with a torch shined against it anymore. The third green light on the main board is also NOT lighting up.

Weird thing is though, I can connect a secondary screen via the Displayport and it works and shows that the iMac can see the new GPU, so the card must be installed correctly?

I've also tried installing NVIDA graphic card drivers with no luck.

I also added the boardID to AppleGraphicsDevicePolicy.kext/Info.plist and cleared the caches etc as described here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2011-imac-graphics-card-upgrade.1596614/page-25

Booting from a USB High Sierra installer also does not bring the screen to life?

Any thoughts before I go completely mad!!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for responding. Yes, I've read (and re-read) the initial post. Pressing Alt at boot does nothing and the external screen only kicks in later in on the boot sequence when the grey bar is almost across the screen, I'm guessing after the relevant drivers have loaded.

I'll keep working on other ideas. Thanks again.

I recently identified two reasons causing the same problem:
- Backlight cable. Either not connected, or spoilt. The former happened to me few times. Some also reported that the backlight itself was spoilt, which can be replaced.
- The eDP cable. This fragile displayport cable has a even more fragile connector. After plugging several times, it sometimes does not work any more. If you have another machine, try swapping it. If not, clean the contacts on both the cable an the logic board connector. You may be lucky and it works again. Was the case with mine. To be on the safe side, you can replace it at relatively low cost. Remove the tape on top of the screen where the cable goes under. There is the same connector as on the logic board.
My symtoms with the eDP cable was: first, it was like yours, dark screen, LED 4 ON. Later, only 3 LEDs on logic board. Check that. If you got 3 LEDs only, your eDP is definitely not detected.

Service manual: "If LED#4 is ON and there is no image on display, then the LCD panel, the LED backlight board, or the cables between LCD and logic board or backlight board might be installed incorrectly, or need replacement."

50W and 60W roms need a hardware backlight mod to have display and Apple bootpicker. GOP roms do not need hardware backlight mod, but you have no more Apple bootscreen, you have to use OpenCore to have Opencore bootpicker.
There is no resistors missing list as far as i know. You just need to buy the right card with a vbios chip present on the PCB. I'am afraid that WX4170 with missing vbios chip are useless (for us).
Last thing, there is a more recent vbios for WX4170 cards, WX4150_GOP.ROM.
