Has anyone had success installing windows on the imac via bootcamp after a GPU upgrade?
You can with an EFI install, but do NOT let your iMac connect to the internet on first boot, and you *MUST* disable the HD3000 (hardware ID 8086....) from device manager otherwise you will face an endless BSOD issue that can only be fixed with Safe Mode.

I also created a guide to enable Backlight Control in W10 that also fixes the Backlight levels. It's here somewhere.

Awesome, thank you.
Is there a guide for this? Specifically disabling HD3000? or is that pretty straight forward? ....
I guess what I'm asking is do I disable that from the macos side or the windows side?

You have to disable it in Device Manager, i'll try to get a screenshot later.

I never did update on the GPU upgrade

Used the k5100m card. and the @nikey22 vbios flash

It was great success!
Thank you @ZenSurfeur for guidance on how to run ssh into the mac and properly do everything.

Also to flash I used the usb linux boot method from @xanderon

Also fixed brightness issue with proper kext file with Hackintool

Hello,
a few days ago i successfully installed a K2100M into an IMac (2011, 27) which was sold as 'dead' --- it was able to revive it! :) --- thanks to all the developers, especially Nick [D]vB!!!
Took this as a test-ride to upgrade my main 2011 27' IMac (which is my daily driver and got a replacement 6970M-GPU-Chip (no - not just a reflow) 3 years ago ... but i still dont believe that it's going to last forever.)

Unfortunately now I dont want to cannibalize the Frankenstein-IMac and need another, compatible & affordable gpu.

Anybody (preferably EU) got one in spare?

Also for anyone have trouble installing Windows 10 on their 2011 iMac
I just installed it and everything including sound works!
This took about a week of searching through these forums and several other forums till I stumbled on the source below today...

I essentially copied the ISO files to the USB along with the Window Support files to install bootcamp in windows and run the drivers.

This is the guide I followed to do it.

Everything on windows is working as it should (so far)
Installed bootcamp drivers, and I can confirm sound DOES work. This isn't an EFI install.

I'd recommend install mac fan controls first thing since my fans didn't go any faster than the minimum speed upon start up and if you have an apple mouse, get a secondary mouse because it won't work going through the set up phase until you get the drivers installed.

Windows also recognizes my recently upgraded k5100m gpu and I haven't had any problems with it.

Currently running Windows on a completely different SSD from my macos and once steam is done downloading I'll get a valley score.

UPDATE:
So upon getting a game and valley downloaded and running both I noticed something interesting in valley...
I doesn't say the OS as Windows 10 home... which is listed as the OS in the systems from the start menu.
It notices the gpu but only half of what it actually is... but when I look up the gpu from the start menu it comes up at the full 8gb...

Valley scores were actually lower on the windows side of things

Hi all,

I have recently come to acquire a 27" 2011 imac. Thankfully the HD6970M currently in it is still functioning, however I am looking to upgrade the GPU for futureproofing.

I have found a K3100M on ebay that was pulled from an HP ZBook, and am looking to make sure that this specific model will function with the imac.

Thanks,
Joe

Sorry to ask a few newbie questions:

a) What is the purpose of MXM X-bracket? Is it a must have item?
b) Understand from reading that only 2011 Intel CPU have HD3000 h/w enc/dec, 2010 and older do not have. macOS is also unable to access the Nvidia NVENC. As such, even if we put in a 780m Nvidia into iMac 2011, the HW enc/dec is only using the HD3000 graphics enc/dec right?

Thanks.

Yes, you only get Intel QuickSync, no Nvidia hardware support.
Take a look at the pictures attached at post #1, the x-bracket is the x-shape part fixing the card on the sink!
Read post #1!

Hey, Joe! Making profit is in this world really the way (to destroy everything what makes this world a place to live in), but help yourself reading the complete thread and post #1 if your goal is just to make a personal profit.

Ah sorry, I didn't mean I'm going to sell the imac for a profit, just the 6950M to recuporate some of the money I may spend on the K3100M. Sorry if it came off like I was only in it for the money. I mainly bought it just to tinker and use for the next few years as my main computer. I removed what I said from my original post.

Hi I'm sorry but can I just make sure that the ZBook model of K3100M will work after I flash it - I just want to make sure as I'm going to have to ship it from China - I've looked through the links and it says that the K3100M does work but I just want to be sure that one from a ZBook will

Update: Catalina Loader based on OpenCore 0.6.0:

All users of OpenCore please revisit my latest post and possibly install the latest image. All users having already version 6.0 should just upgrade the config.plist used.

With version 6.0 the developers introduced a new way of blocking apple firmware upgrades, and dropped the old method. Especially users of AMD cards masking their old iMac to be a new iMacPro1,1 may be in danger of getting accidentally an unwanted firmware upgrade of the new iMacPro1,1. Of course Apple's software installer checks this normally, but if such a check fails for some reason you may have "bricked" your iMac.

To avoid this use the latest config.plist and please all users of a modded iMac dump there recent EFI firmware (Apple boot rom) using this tool and save it on an external device or iCloud.... This image is password protected using the name of the capital of Italy written in small letters - rom

Technical info for OpenCore configurator aware users:
Add to NVRAM section a new key named run-efi-updater with value No and type STRING

Latest observations:
After installing various versions of the latest Big Sur Beta all my EFI partitions on all installed discs are flooded with Apple EFI update files named Firmware.scap. So this threat is real. Fortunately I got no upgrade...
