I owned two 780M and used them nearly half a year without such problems. The most likely problem we had during the last year with all this MXM-B NVIDIA cards was this:

1. the users did not really manage to grind the holes for the big two R22 coils.
2. the users did not use the proper thermo paste with the GPU (like Artic MX-4)
3. users did not use the proper paste with memory and other parts (K5 pro)

Using pads instead of K5 pro is the worst thing you can do. It makes it impossible to get the GPU surface into contact with the copper part of the heat sink.

Since I cannot repair broken cards be writing posts or patching the only thing I can to is reminding the well known problems.

Ah, probably would need to go back in to the iMac once again. I thought pads on memory was the proper way, but there is a chance that chip has poor contact now.

Anyhow we could be missing a key thing here: this did not happen until the ROM update (from 780M_EG2 to 780M_BR2). And the temp on heatsink used to climb much higher than it does during the crash now.

Quick question: after spending a couple days trying to get Big Sur to work, I finally gave up and installed Catalina on my 2011 27" iMac. I followed the post 1 instructions and everything went smoothly with no issues and it's all working perfectly now. Except I got a notification right away saying there's an update for Safari 14.0.3 (it's currently running 13.1.3). Is this a safe update to run since it's not a system update? If not, is there another way I can update Safari? Thanks!

Hi Kranny36, I noticed that GRML linux flash usb solution didn't have DHCP activated (in my case). To get the router assigned an IP-Adress to Linux live system I needed to push a few keys on a keyboard connected via usb (some standard cherry or whatever keyboard). I needed to hit
  • N (for changing network settings)
  • 5x Return (accepting different dialog boxes)
  • E (Exit)
  • Return
  • "arrow right" (for choosing "quit")
  • Return
This should enable GRML Linux to receive local IP-address from your router. You can test this by trying USB live stick on a mac with working internal LCS screen... Just have a look at the pics to understand what you are blindly doing.
Good luck.

I had the same issue and posted about it a few months back. For some reason @Ausdauersportler refuses to acknowledge that this is a problem for some people. 🤷‍♂️ See, I'm not crazy.

I actually activated the wifi connection blind. I did it by simultaneously doing it another Mac with a working screen and copying my keystrokes to the blind one.

Please help :)

Is there anybody running an iMac 2011 system with K610M/K1100M/K2100M running the latest version of the OpenCore package (0.6.6) posted here and confirm that it is working in general.

Please just post back the machine and card and OC versions and OS in a single line like these two examples:

iMac12.2 / K2100M / OC 0.6.6. / Big Sur 11.2.1 / Micropatcher
iMac12.1 / K1100M / OC 0.6.6. / High Sierra / native
iMac12.1 / K1100M / OC 0.6.6. / Catalina / @dosdude1

Thanks in advance

BTW: Did you need to change something in the supplied config files to make it work other than renaming it?
iMac 12,1 / k2100m / OC 0.6.6 / High Sierra / native <-- NOT working
iMac 12,1 / k2100m / OC 0.6.6 / Mojave / dosdude1 <-- working

Quick question,

Does having these cards mess up booting from DVD? I've tried everything out there to install Windows without an optical drive. I gave up and just installed (internally) a known-to-work DVD drive. When I select the DVD drive from the startup selection screen, the Mac freezes. Should I reinstall my original GPU (which I no longer have)?

For the time being, I'm gonna try installing legacy windows onto my SSD from a PC, and putting that SSD on my Mac. This will be my last hope...

How can't you make it work? I installed mine with PatchedSur, it's very easy, although I have to be sure to have alt key pressed on reboots to get rid of the black screen. (K610m). Then I created the boot dongle with opencore and that's it.

Well maybe I'll try PatchedSur next time, but that won't be any time soon. I followed the instructions on page 1 of this thread and used the micro patcher automator linked there. It ran the install and post-install patches fine, but then it wouldn't boot. I tried using the OpenCore EFI that came with the automator. Wouldn't work. Tried updating that EFI to 0.6.6. Wouldn't work. Tried using my CatalinaLoader SD card, which I already knew worked from before, wouldn't work this time. Tried updating it to 0.6.6, still wouldn't work. I figured maybe I should try installing again, and even though it installed fine the first time, it wouldn't re-install. It kept crashing halfway through and refusing to finish. I had to use internet recovery to re-install High Sierra and start over (I have a time machine backup so I wasn't too worried).

Dosdude's Catalina patcher worked flawlessly and it boots perfectly with my CatalinaLoader SD card (0.6.6). I use this computer mainly for music recording and mixing, so I needed to get it past High Sierra because I was stuck on Logic 10.4. I thought I'd only be able to get to Logic 10.5 with Catalina, but I was surprised to see it will run that latest Logic 10.6! So I'm happy with that and don't have much desire to go up to Big Sur at the moment.

Just in case anyone else has this question, I found an answer on reddit. It's safe to use the system update to update Safari. I just did it and it worked normally.

Answering my own question, installing 780m on a 2009 system seems to freeze legacy boots. I tried windows dvd’s (7 & 10), ssd with windows installed from a PC using the said dvd’s, windows installed using the virtualbox trick, and it’s always the same freezing. To be more specific, the system freezes on the startup disk selection screen. If I select macOS, no issues. If I select legacy windows, instant freeze.

Won't boot? I'm sorry to ask, but did you run the EFI drive from the install disk once? Don't update using Opencore because it will trick your installation to be other computer.
You need to clean pram , run the efi disk (it will shutdown) then run installation, it will reboot at about 13..14 min be sure you have alt key pressed to access the boot drive, you should select the temp drive it will create for installation and it will continue for more minutes, then it will boot again to clear temp files and the temporary drive, then it will boot again to the macOS to finish installation.

Why do you think this Nvidia Kepler GPU is capable of doing HEVC?

Check the first post Nvidia and AMD section, again.
I do not know what HEVC is !😯
I just want to have graphics acceleration under Catalina .
currently it is not possible to use Catalina . extremely poor system performance. 🤯
how can fix it ? 🙏

Check out the first post how to install Catalina avoiding the legacy video patch.
Nvidia Kepler cards do not offer H.265/HEVC. But this is not your problem. You missed the entire information about macOS updates.

@Ausdauersportler I see that OC has an install config, why is that? Is it for cards that doesn't support boot selection?
You can use the stock NVIDIA config.plist for this. At least this worked out with K3100M and K3000M cards before @nikey22 made an EFI vBIOS.

The install one is just accidentally part of the latest upload and used with the micropatcher and is a close relative of the NVIDIA one, too. In fact you may use both.

So, swapped to a k2100 and Catalina was great, just minor issues. But Big Sur refuses to see any ethernet, wifi or bluetooth. Im guessing its a known issue with 2011's?

Edit: Bluetooth works

Did you install post install patches?

...go on

Lol, but seriously, no i didnt see the part about post install patches. I just used Patched Sur and patched the installer.
You have to open the PatchedSur on your apps folder and apply patches. I think you already did that
