phew, 810 pages! I have no idea really where to even start.

I have a 2011 27". Can someone just recommend a card thats $100 or less that can be flashed for boot screen? Currently has the 6970m.
You don't really have to read the 810 pages. As long as you read the first post you should be fine.
Any NVIDIA card should be able to give you a boot screen, and as for the AMD side, the WX4130 is the most compatible card, but you'll be on your own re:native bootscreen. We still don't have the vbios with the added solution here, you have to build it on your own (the bootscreen you get is via opencore)

Hello everyone. I am Argentine and I have lived in Mexico for 20 years, my wife is Mexican. I stayed in this country because I saw many opportunities. Some time ago, I was a victim of organized crime, they left me with nothing and on the street. Me and my 50 year old have had to start all over again. 2 years ago, I bought 2 old imac mid 2011 21.5 for my daughters who are studying. All for 150 dollars. I've always had Windows PCs, but I couldn't pass up this opportunity. I didn't even know how to install a program in utilities, macOS was totally new to me. Thanks to this forum, and others, with sacrifice and discount promotions, I have managed to buy 2 ssds, one for each imac, and 32 gigabytes of memory for each imac. I am learning a little more every day, I have managed to partition the ssds and install windows 10, I managed to give them audio by modifying the cirrus drivers. I also installed, refind to be able to choose between windows 10 and Hight Sierra, now my daughters have 2 excellent machines to study. Without having to do it, I have read publication number 1 many times, because I found it very interesting for upgrade GPU. A few weeks ago, one of the imacs with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, began to give vertical stripes and stopped turning on. I knew that I was going to have to start, to take action with what is being discussed in this forum. I ordered an Nvidia Quadro K2100M Dell, and a Ch341 programmer, and i7 2600s, I hope to finish this project well, since I don't understand much about how to use opencore, and how Efi and UEFi work, everything is new to me. I want to say thanks to all of you, for making me feel accompanied in all my projects, for my daughters. Everything that you do in this forum cannot be paid for with anything in the world. Thanks a lot.

..."Some NVIDIA cards (K3000M, K610M, K1100M, K2100M, and K3100M) have new older Hynix AFR, newer Hynix BFR or Elpida memory chips (late production) and the BIOS published here does not work properly in any case, you may get white screen on boot or later under load."...

..."Stay away from K1100m Elpida its
problematic"...

Need some clarification prior to purchase of HP k610m (N15P-Q1-A2) with 2gb Elpida memory chips. Is this card problematic to flash BIOS?

I have iMac mid 2011 27" with dead HD 6970M 1gb, from my understanding it has 3 pipe heatsink. Will the card above clear the heatsink using 1.0mm copper added shims?

Thank you!

Dear users,

Today I was working on my iMac 12,1 2011 with Nvidia Quadro K2100M and Monterery with OpenCore Legacy Patcher. It was a hell of a job for me to get everything working and everything was working fine until today. All of a sudden my iMac freezes (see picture). I was just looking Youtube and writing some mails.

Now my iMac does show me some weird frames after login in. Only the screen during internet recovering looks good. What can I do? Please help me. Thank you in advance.

Urgh, I would not ask you about this horrible Desktop Background...

The NVIDIA K2100M you cannot run proper with Monterey - stay on Big Sur,
the are no NVIDIA Driver support anymore in macOS Monterey - my info.

I think your Video card is faulty because of overheating (!) - hope you
have use the MacsFanControl Software, but NEVER in automatic mode !

If using a cheap Thermal grease, you have 10-12° Celsius difference.

;)

Both my K3000m and K3100m run fine with Monterey and Ventura!

Greets everybody!

I have 21" 12,2 imac and I am planning on doing the GPU upgrade. For the card I am planning on getting the RADEON WX4150 or WX4130.

The problem is knowing a reputable place and vendor. Do I just pick any results from ebay or aliexpress?
This is one random store from aliexpress:

The decision to choose the WX4150 it's because it looks the least pain free card install.
If somebody could recommend me a reliable vendor I appreciate it!!

Many thanks.

K5100m will work fine. Or 4100 if that’s too much. Performance will be good but not amazing by latest standards. I have k5100 and wx7100. With oclp, they’re both same in terms of usability if you do stuff in the right order.

Sorry, where you answering me?

If so, those models are way to expensive and excessive in performance. The performance of WX4150 is just right for this case.

My main question is when it comes to purchase from a reputable vendor. Do I simply put 'WX4150' in aliexpress or ebay search and pick any of the results?

Thanks.

In my case, I try to be as careful as possible. My economic situation is bad, and my daughters need their machines working to study. They also want to be youtubers haha. First I search in Google, where normally it does not bring the entire search, then I do a specific search in ebay, amazon and finally in aliexpress, I look for the sellers with the most positive comments. So far I have been very lucky. When you can't buy a new machine, you have no choice but to have a little faith.

The wx7100 and K5100m are certainly not cheap, and for those on a budget probably not the best choice. @Tim_imac's info was useful to me. I got my GPUs for a more reasonable price, and as predicted by @Ausdauersportler, the AMD has been more future-proof than other cards. My main problem is that because the wx7100 is expensive and therefore less popular, there is a smaller user base to report upgrade issues or configuration recommendations.

I've been holding off moving from Monterey to Ventura for initially OCLP was reported to have may issues with that. It is tough with everyone running different cards and different iMac models, to know if issues reported apply. Reading threads specific to the task, such as "macOS 13 Ventura on Unsupported Macs Thread" can be worse, for most of the comments are from non-iMac users. It sounds like there may still be a few issues, but today I take the plunge and upgrade to OCLP v0.6.1, then Ventura. With a recent TimeMachine backup I figure I can always reinstall and restore if things go terribly wrong. Wish me luck. :)

Thanks.

We all started with WX4150 from the generic Google page.
In the end, it will lead you to ebay or Aliexress, only a few vendors offering this card.
And most of the case, it's the same vendor selling on 2 different platforms.
Reputable or not, there will be plenty of issues occur randomly.
I used to trust Aliexpress, until one day my purchased item was marked as "delivered" without my acknowledge about it. Appealing to Aliexpress yield no result.

I just got a 2009 Core 2 Duo 27" iMac (10,1) and am looking to upgrade it. The "first post" has me quite confused about the status of nVidia Kepler GPUs on this thing, though.
Specifically, I have a Quadro K1000M and K3100M (K1000M flashed for an iMac11,2 and 12,1 and K3100M still on stock Dell VBIOS). What would and wouldn't work with this?

I saw this post linked on the first page: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/2011-imac-graphics-card-upgrade.1596614/post-30814246 that mentions getting it working without EFI boot screen with a certain firmware, but I can't find a link to this firmware. Is that firmware available for download?

Also, the post mentions display output on an external monitor only, but what exactly is? Is it just the EFI boot screen that shows on an external display like some old AMD WX4130 EG2 VBIOSes, or nothing at all, even after the OS boots? If it's the latter, is this again like the old AMD EG2 VBIOSes on 2010 models where if you hotwired the display backlight it would come on? I did that mod, with great success, on an iMac11,3 last year.

I had tried putting my Quadro K1000M in an identical spec C2D iMac10,1 last year, and it seemed to have booted to a blank white screen but with no boot chime or keyboard response what so ever. I had a broken LVDS connector on that one though, so I don't know what, if anything, it was outputting. Has anyone else done this?

No vBIOS available on the first post will work for an iMac 10.1 C2D.
That's mean your iMac 10,1 GPU is not upgradable.
I would use it at it is, or as a monitor, or completely convert it to a monitor, for what it worths: the 27" 2k display.

My iMac is the same exact config as your Scooby. Ventura has been pretty stable for two weeks now on OCLP 0.6.1, no issues with install. I have a BCM94360CD I was planning to upgrade to, but it's not necessary as wifi and Bluetooth work fine with the existing card.

Problems:
- Some M4000 cards are offered without a BIOS chip. Do not buy!
- W5170M needs this modification.
- M6100/W6170M will overheat the iMac9,1 (fan cannot catch up)

Tested systems: (LVDS)
- iMac10,1 21.5: LVDS version tested and working with issues discussed below
- iMac9,1 24: LVDS version, tested and working with issues discussed below

The Venus cards are easy to install but complex to manage during the initial software installation.
You need to install OpenCore in advance and add the changes posted before booting into macOS.

After installing the card it will not simply boot directly into any macOS version (WindowServer crash) unless you install and use OpenCore and apply the settings described below.

So you need to install OpenCore using OCLP onto your boot disk before booting in your current installation in normal multi user mode.

In case you have a working system before changing the card just run OLCP, select the proper MXM GPU type to AMD (GCN) and build and install OpenCore to your system and reboot. Otherwise use another Mac to create the OC settings or create a OpenCore BootCD.

The settings needed are equivalent with adding radpg=15 -wegtree agdpmod=pikera to the boot-args in the config.plist of OpenCore.

Additionally you need to add two more entries connectors and connector-count to the OpenCore config.plist manually side by side to the CAIL settings. See attached file, a partial copy of my working configuration.
1. W5170M causes SMBUS conflicts in iMac9,1. Solution as usual needs (hot air) soldering!

2. After sleep and wake the main internal display becomes milky white, this needs another mod, no ETA. The other external display (connected via miniDP) works fine even after waking up!
tempImageZ5Tcna.png

With some more tweaks we solved the Milky Way problem on sleep and boot for both iMac10,1 21.5 and iMac9,1 24 inch.

3. But you cannot have it all. iMac9,1 does not support EFI picker (only OpenCore), and it does not enable brightness control as of now. Brightness Control working after adding the panel back to Apple backlight support using the BacklightInjector.kext (see attachment). Add it to OpenCore configuration generated with OCLP. Still no EFI picker, though.

BrightnessControl.png

4. To get the OpenCore picker it working use an iMac10,1 + GCN MXM config created manually with the OCLP app. Currently OCLP does not really know about GPU modded iMac9,1 models. Below a scene from the DRM test trailer. OCLP 0.6.3 will add iMac9,1 support!

iMac9,1-BigSur-M5100.png
iMac9,1.png

iMac10,1.png
- Airplay is working until Catalina as with any other AMD metal card on iMac11,x and iMac12,2 (without using QuickSync)
- moderate metal scores
- EFI boot screen
- brightness control working
- GPU power management working
- needs macOS 10.8.3 or better (HD7000 support)
- still full Monterey support (no root patching needed unlike Kepler)
- card can be installed without any heat sink modifications on iMac10,1 MXM-A sink (copper plate)
- external display can be used, no sync or other problems
- sleep & wake working, although look into known issues!
- DRM support für AppleTV and Netflix/Amazon Prime on Safari with all macOS versions until Monterey
- GeekBench Metal and OpenCL: > 10.000
- Valley: 19.4 FPS, 811 Score
- MetalBench: 19 MRays/s
- CoreClock: 675 MHz
- Memory: 1000 MHz
- TPD: 30W
- Thanks to @internetzel for his help and dedication and time helping to get this GOP vBIOS working and @dfranetic for testing the M5100, creating M6100 and W6170M versions and so much more

Update 03/09/2023:
The new vBIOS versions uploaded to GitHub do not need additional OpenCore tweaks. Just use OCLP to prepare OpenCore and preselect AMD GCN graphics card in settings.

Update 05/11/2023:
Added EFI boot screen support for iMac9,1! Meanwhile OCLP supports both LVDS models listed here.

Downloads:
All vBIOS files can be found in this Github repository - be careful to pick the files having an LVDS name tag and for iMac9,1 use the ones labeled with EnableGop91, too.

Thanks.
I usually search "WX4150 MXM" or else PCI cards with fans on them pop up. So just add "MXM" to your search after the card model number. Also try to study some pictures of MXM A and B cards.. they generally look pretty similar and you'll be able to tell them apart from the others that won't fit. I'm in the US so I only use ebay and only like to buy from US sellers who offer returns. I don't trust aliexpress because I've ordered things from there that have never shown up and it's a pain to get your money back. Ebay has better guarantees and protections.

the WX4150 seems like a hard to find card. No US sellers on ebay right now. Shipped form china it's $150. I've had ebay alerts for all these graphics cards going for several years now and AMD cards have always been overpriced in my opinion. I've always found the Nvidia Quadro cards easier to find and cheaper. Geforce cards are also more available. Since you have the 21.5 iMac I think the best quadro card you can do is K2100M. I paid 30 or 40 for one in 2018. Not sure how much you're willing to pay but if you're set on the 4150 I'd just add MXM to your search.

I bought a working K4100M for $36 in December but I was keeping up with that search several times a day. Prices were hoovering around $60 for that card. They have since seemed to increase in price again -- ??!! Right now there is a K3100M available for $47. K2100M seems to be around $50. Not sure how much you want to pay but hopefully this helps.

If anyone is interested I have updated and modified the awesome grml-linux vbios flash boot disk that @xanderon shared with the macrumors community.

The changes include adding amdvbflash, thanks to @Ausdauersportler add-on, all the current ROMS from post 1 and a local Backup directory to store your backed up original ROMS directly on the Bootable USB using the persistency function in grml as default.

By doing this the directory structure has changed so please see the detailed guide below on instructions for using this modified bootable USB.

Create your USB using my modified @xanderon boot disk and connect to your target machine via SSH as outlined in @xanderson post HERE.

At root type:
Code:
lsblk
This will list list your mounted disks and is important as this disk order may change, sda/sdb/sdc, depending on what disks you have connected, how fast they are loaded by GRML etc, therefore the path to your working directory may change. You will see a example of this if you look at my terminal.txt file, I flashed 1 AMD and 1 NVIDIA GPU on seperate Macs.

In terminal copy the path to the root of your Flash USB, Example:
Code:
/lib/live/mount/persistence/sdd2
cd paste and add /flash to get to the directory:
Code:
cd /lib/live/mount/persistence/sdd2/flash
Press enter, you will now be in your working directory.
Code:
root@grml ~ # /lib/live/mount/persistence/sdd2/flash
In this example I will be using amdvbflash to backup and flash my stock AMD apple vbios.
1st - lets look at the working directory:
Code:
ls
2nd - Verify your adapter is recognised:
Code:
./amdvbflash -i
3rd - save a backup of your original bios to the Backup folder on your USB.
Code:
./amdvbflash -s 0 Backups/Original_Vbios.rom
4th - Verify the bios is saved to your Backups folder:
Code:
cd Backups
ls
Now if your paranoid that when you shut down your bios will be gone you can stop, shutdown and actually check the USB drive Backups folder.

View attachment 1749833

5th - flash new bios for example:
Code:
./amdvbflash -f -p 0 AMD/WX4150_GOP.ROM

WARNING: There is no pause asking you if you wish to continue as in nvflash so make sure you have your backup and are flashing the correct ROM.

You will be greeted with some code similar to this verifying the process is complete:
Code:
AMDVBFLASH version 4.71, Copyright (c) 2020 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
