I don't know what it is, but I like things new. I know all the refurbs have more tests etc. etc. etc. but at the end of the day I'm after a new one.

Haha thanks, basically what I wanted to hear!I'll probably just but this gen in December then as I'll only be doing a bit of photoshop and parralleling with basic day to day activities. The Quad i5 will be more than enough for me

but there is something about a nice, untouched, shiney new product.
Comparing a computer to a car is not valid. A car with 3k miles could have its engine severely abused in that time, which significantly affects its lifespan. I would NEVER consider buying a demo/rental/lease/fleet car because of that. The ones that won't even consider purchasing a used car with 3000 miles in the same model year, even if it costs $4k less.
A computer fresh out of the box and a computer with 3k hours of operation as a demo unit will have no difference in their lifespan.
Refurbs are new.
Blimey. Jack attack!
I know where you're coming from Jack. I know a refurb would be the cheapest option but there is something about a nice, untouched, shiney new product.
With the regards to waiting. I'd assume you mean are they going to change the design, add new features, is it going to turn white again etc? From what these "Experts" are not saying very well is probably not. Just a hardware refresh so its probably not worth waiting as you will be forever chasing the latest and greatest.
This gen quad i5 is overqualified even for what you plan to use it for. I think you should be fine. Don't even need to consider really upgrading to a MacBook Pro..
That being said, here are my $0.02 on refurbs. I know where you're coming from, really, I do. If you are buying this gen though it's pretty much definitely a new computer, especially if it's just stock of the Oct 2009 release (which I have) with different processor architecture. I don't think that would matter with what you are using it for. These computers come with the SAME warranty that the new computers come with and the same option to upgrade to AppleCare plan. I don't think this will change your mind. I have friends like that too. The ones that won't even consider purchasing a used car with 3000 miles in the same model year, even if it costs $4k less. I think it's illogical to rule it out from the start, but it is what it is and it's your money. I just thought I'd get my opinion out there.
Thats exactly what a refurb is. Put a new and refurb next to each other and the ONLY way you'll be able to tell which is a refurb is by the serial number.
A refurb isn't a used computer, its one that failed a test on the factory floor and required a replacement part. Because they had to open it to replace that part they can't legally sell it as a new machine, even though it still is.

Computers do not wear like cars. A computer fresh out of the box and a computer with 3k hours of operation as a demo unit will have no difference in their lifespan.
Would buying a refurb 27" be a way to know you're getting one without any of the screen issues?
Hard drives have limited lifespan so in fact, it might affect its lifespan. The HD can last longer in the demo model than it would on a brand new machine, so again, it's just a game of luck.
Refurbs come with full warranty and are eligible for AppleCare so this solves the issue
Then you are truly ignorant.Honestly.. take a hint.. I DO NOT WANT A REFURB!!
No. Mentioning it being a referb is a choice. As said before the only way to tell visually is the serial number and many second hand owners wouldn't even know if they weren't told.P.S - Would it being a refurb affect potential reselling value?

On this note, is AppleCare really worth while? Or not? Been reading about it abit it seems mixed views.
Apple may just skip Core i7 980x and 990x and go straight for Sandy Bridge with the next iMacs.
Hi guys, I am thinking of getting the 27" iMac on my brithday (29th of December)... but will it be worth holding out for a 2011 new release? I'd be pretty pissed off if I just spent ~£1600 for it to be out of date in a month or two.. ( Obviously it will eventually will become out of date, but not straight away)
Any rough ideas on when the new releases will be out?
Thanks
Should I buy it from Apple with education discount or from somewhere else? Looking for cheapest option..

( Btw not looking for refurbs eithers)
Thanks for the information but I'd have to argue on your first criticism, I'm ignorant for pointing out I don't want a refurbed iMac yet I understand why people are suggesting I should buy one? I find you slightly hypocritical as I'd argue you was infact 'truly ignorant' for keep talking about refurbs when all I have done this thread is explain that I do not want one.![]()

2010 has been a big year for me as i got rid of everything windows, recently i just got a macbook pro 13 inch to add to my 27" imac and iphone 4.
But what would really hurt if apple adds blu ray in their next lineup. I'am not fussed about performance bumps as this constantly changes every year. But adding blu ray would really hurt me as it invites new concepts including 3d gaming, larger storage, compatibility issues os on blu ray disc etc...
On the hand inviting usb 3.0 would be great as you still be able get by with usb 2.0 for several years until you are ready to make the jump.
I'am guessing we will see a bump in memory on 27" inch models from 4 to 8, possibly a facelift on all models including macbooks plus the long awaited chipsets which can invite usb 3.0.
Blu ray is anyones guess????
It's only 179$ but in the worst case it saves you from 1000$ repair. All repairs will cost more than the AppleCare so IMO it's worth it. Some people say it isn't and some people say it is. It's a preference thing.
Are you in dire need of a new computer? if not you're probably better off waiting for Sandy Bridge and USB3 come to the iMac if being on the leading edge is important you.
I prefer refurbs whenever possible because they are the only ones garuanteed to have been tested. If you buy new, you have more of a chance getting a machine with problems.
So to refuse a machine that is BETTER and CHEAPER for no good reason is ignorance, if not plain stupidity.
Don't mac's have some form of warranty? I guess i'll just get the applecare, gives me peace of mind.
I was enjoying the beginning of your post, you subjected your opinion without getting rude, but then you did what everyother Refurb-bummer.
Macs come with one-year warranty. With AppleCare, that can be extended to 3 years from the date of purchase.
Well it is pretty damn aggravating on their part, when the person they're trying to persuade is turning a blind eye to the most logical solution to offering the most affordable option. Call it more of a reverse placebo effect, if the refurb came in its original box without your knowledge of it being a refurb, you would easily mistaken it for a 100% brand new iMac. I even had a friend who just recently purchased a refurbished macbook pro, and he was dead-set on getting a new one and never touching a refurb, but when he got it he felt like it was brand new. There's nothing to worry over possible scratches or dents either, because apple offers the exact same warranty.
But I guess if unboxing the machine out of its original white box is worth 200 dollars to you, then by all means get a "new" one. It just seems like you have lots of money to throw around.
I don't have a mac yet? Haha.
Honestly.. take a hint.. I DO NOT WANT A REFURB!! Sorry but I tried explaining you people don't take the hint..
I was referring to when you asked if getting a 13" MacBook Pro with 27" display would be better.
I think you don't get it...if you buy last years model from the Refurbished store it will be BRAND NEW over stock from Apple. They are just selling off last years stock. This has been confirmed many times over based on build dates and retail packaging. (slight change of getting an actual refurbished iMac but you could always return it and get another one)
I know you say you are after the best price...this is it. Now if you just don't want last years model then go with the Edu discount.
