New user here.

I'm not sure whether I should spend money on the 2010 Mac Mini or wait like some other people here for the 2011 refresh.

I'm not that excited about a sandybridge processor. But this will be my first Mac.

I could be waiting for a refresh that might not happen; only Apple knows when.

It's hard as like I said before, this will be my first Mac and I would like it as soon as possible.

I think I could wait until June time, and the price of the 2010 Mac Mini might have dropped by then...

But... What shall I do?

Thanks

I would personally wait. If you only use it for light web browsing and music/movies, you could pull the trigger. If you will use more intensive programs wait for the refresh.

True, I'm going to be using Photoshop a lot on it so I guess a better processor will be better.

Just gotta wait.

the only time the price will drop is when the new ones are released, but there is always the refurb store but your best bet is to wait for the refresh.

I'd wait unless you find a great deal on a refurbished machine(I'd only buy from Apple for that, but thats just me) or Amazon or another 3rd party has a great sale.

Otherwise i3 or i5 will really come in handy for things like photoshop. But keep in mind, people have used much slower machines for run photoshop. Even new version of Photoshop I'm sure. Heck I'm sure some MBA users have photoshop installed even with the CPU being one of the weakest parts of that laptop(and I say that with love, I myself use a MBA 11'' as my main machine, it serves me quite well)

Amazon.co.uk have the 2010 Mac Mini at 570 pounds which is good compared to Apple. 50 quid less cheaper than Apple directly.

I want the mac mini badly... but what would I regret more? Buying one this week and finding a new mini is coming out next month or so.. hmmmm this is hard XD

But I've taken on board various opinions here, not least whether the Mini is really the best solution for those of us who'll also need to buy a separate monitor. Thus I'll explore alternatives for my desktop computing needs. I'll still be a Mac guy via my laptop (+ I have an old G4 iMac) & have a high regard for Apple generally, but I'm no longer ruling out a W7 machine as being a viable solution also.

I'm a long time Mac user, I've never bought anything but Macs. But because I won't own an all in one either I too am considering a Windows machine as an alternative.
Apple gained switchers because of the mini. But now, because the an all in one is the only mid range computer Apple makes it looks like the iMac is starting to cause switchers in the other direction.

Is a wired or wireless keyboard better for a Mac Mini?

wired is always the better choice for security and accuracy.

But wireless is pretty with no wires to pull loose or trip on and that is about it.

I have one wireless setup my iMac it works because i can place the keyboard and the mouse close to the iMac with a direct line of sight. The mini is a HT machine behind a glass door wireless does not work so I have a long usb cord under a rug to the coffee table next to the couch. Why because it works. I just can't get wireless to work in that setup.

I use wireless as I like the freedom it gives. Even if it doesn't work as well as wired, I wouldn't want wires along the floor.

I use Logitech wireless keyboards and mice. I believe I may have had to use a wired keyboard and mouse for the initial setup (not sure about this as it was back in 2009 that I set my Minis up).

If you already have a keyboard and mouse, give those a try and then if you don't like your experience with those then think about buying new ones.

I'm buying the 2010 mac mini Friday and I'm looking forward to it.

It's something I've always wanted and we could be waiting months for the 2011 mac mini; that's if there is going to be a model released of it this year.

How do I connect a VGA and DVI monitor to a mac mini to get dual screen?

Let us know what you think! Will be curious to hear the perspective of someone buying it at this point in the cycle.

Good for you.

That is possible. Unlikely they'd hold off till next year due to the end of production of the C2D processors used in the Mini.

As I already have 09 Minis I don't see a worthwhile benefit in upgrading to the 2010 Mini so I'm willing to wait and see what the next Mac Mini is like.

I would get a Mini-Display port to VGA adapter (apple sells these), and use HDMI > DVI for the other screen.

Why ? I guess you still have a p.c or a mac at the moment. You know Mac Mini's with Sandy Bridge are around the corner. You've the chance that you are within a couple of weeks stucked with outdated hardware. Buy the 2011 version and you can easier skip the 2012 or 2013 version. With the 2010 version you are probably earlier forced to upgrade.

Personally I'm waiting, though I'm in a position that I don't NEED a Mac mini right at this moment. Plus, I'm hoping SSD's drop in price while waiting, because I'm pretty set on at least 120GB SSD for my next Mac.

Another reason to wait: free Lion.

What if the current 2011 version is not Sandy Bridge?? But you bought it anyway??
It won't be. THe 2011 Mini probably has to stay on market for ~*10 months, and in that case the current chipset is not an option. It is slower, and would be considered 'out of date', and it is also being EOL'd anyway.
