It all sounds good with the exception of the HD - 5400 rpm drives, I mean really? Surely a 7200 rpm should be pretty standard fare.

All I have to say is, what a GLORIOUS DAY! I am so happy they gave an option for AMD graphics so we don't have to deal with Intel HD 3000. SO HAPPY!

I have ordered:

From Apple:
2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 ($940, tax included)

From NewEgg:
8 GB RAM ($55, no tax)
Intel 320 160 GB SSD ($300, no tax)

This will be my main computer. GET IT ON!

Indeed, I agree! I really wonder how well the AMD GPU will perform with the 27" ACD for gaming.

So when the Macbook Pros get ivy bridge, the Airs and Mac Minis will still be behind processor wise?

:apple: has really hit one out of the ballpark with the new mini released today. Not perfect, but probably 95% of what I would've wanted. The new discrete graphics and SSD options especially surprised me. And combined with the new Cinema Display having a built-in Thunderbolt-to-FireWire/USB/Ethernet hub... <applause>

Hate to burst the bubble for some people, but the 6630M in the Mini appears to have only 256 MB of RAM, while all the 6630M benchmarks people are referencing are actually for the model with 1GB of RAM. Apple apparently skimped on the RAM.

Simply out of an abundance of caution does anyone know what sort of a hit the Mini will take having the 5400 rpm drives as opposed to 7200's. I have the 2009 base iMac C2D model and am wondering if I will notice a drop in performance or will the new Mini's out perform my iMac. Hoping to be first in the queue in the morning at my nearest Apple store - will go for the mid-range model with the AMD graphics.

Yeah, but Ivy Bridge isn't coming for a while. I'd like to wait for that update, graphics should be faster and likely USB 3 since it's included with Ivy Bridge, but I don't think I can wait that long.

My store had Mini's and Air's in stock but when they went to ring up the Mini it was not in the system yet. The manager even tried to refresh the system and downloaded the latest info but no luck. Will pick it up tomorrow when they are allowed to sell them. :(

Thankfully, I'll have 8 GB of system RAM, muhahaha! But yeah, that is a bummer. Even my July 2008 iMac has 512 MB of VRAM.

5400 RPM hard drives do not even exist in my mind. I just installed Mac OS X Lion on my 2011 MacBook Pro with a 160 GB Intel X25-M SSD and I also installed Mac OS X Lion on my 2008 iMac with a 750 GB 7200 RPM HDD.... there is NO COMPARISON. Not even close. SSD is WAY far and beyond HDD.

I know your question was about 5400 RPM vs. 7200 RPM... hard drive is a computer's largest bottleneck. If I was still stuck in the hard disk drive world, I would want AT LEAST 7200 RPM.

I wonder how long it will be before we start seeing posts about running at a higher temperature than the mid 2010 Mac.

I'm going to buy the new Mac Mini this week, but I already have a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard. Since the new Mac Mini has Lion on it, do I need to buy a Lion upgrade for my MBP or will it give me the update automatically?

Any idea how to get a disk for this unit?

Somehow when the **** has hit the fan, I'm not going to be too happy waiting for ~10 GB to download through an internet-based recovery procedure (running in some form of safe mode)...

[edit: ahh - read the fine print... it does come with a disk... phew

1 mac mini server w/ 2 x 750 - can't wait ]

Is getting to the hard drive tough? IIRC, doesn't the main board have to be removed?

Indeed...
The verdict was out and the case was already closed! So long, guys and gals! I hope that we all have had a great experience with discussions on the 2011 Mac Mini line. I wish the best to those who already bought and will buy a Mac Mini! I will start a new thread with the title "2012 Mac Mini - Speculation".

Just want to say I told ya so! Lol Apple would have been stupid to present anything less than i5's and i7's this time around..:D
