Argh, wish we knew at least when they were gonna announce something.

I am ready to go out there and get a mac mini but will be very peed off if they release a new one right after so I better wait.

I hate waiting!

I hear ya. I'm hoping for a March release, but it's more likely April (or later, damn it). Those pesky iMacs are next in line I reckon, in conjunction with the MB. Hopefully the mini will ride that ship too.

I would definitely wait.

you have to wait. the best mac mini geekbench scores are 4100 or so .

the new 13 inch mac book pro score is over 5900. that is a huge speed lift.

Also if t-bolt allows this to be your minis boot drive

http://www.lacie.com/us/technologies/technology.htm?id=10039

who gives a cr@p about the interior drive anymore just let it be for backup.

put the lacie next to the mini and you will have the fastest boot drive ever . also it should be very quiet. I can't imagine buying a new 2010 today and finding the above to be true next month.

Also not everyone can afford to get a storage array or would want the extra noise particularly in a HTPC setup. I'd probably put a new Mini under the TV if I bought one and use the internal drive.

I may just wait it out another year or two hoping for a quad core which would give a significant boost again. A fair bit depends though on what performance is like of EyeTV watching HD Sport using Progressive Scan. If that works excellent on the new Mac Mini then it'd be very tempting for me to upgrade.

I'm torn a little between updating to new Minis or putting SSDs (when the prices come down more) and 8GB RAM in my existing ones.

Apple would screw up royally if they didn't put a quad core in the next mini. Contemplating selling my 2010 mini and pray they do.
I hate to break it to you, but the processors in the mini will probably be the same 2.3 GHz i5 and 2.7 GHz i7 they put in the 13" MBP. The mini always lags in the update cycles and the hardware is never "leading edge". Today's mid-2010 mini is probably the worst value proposition until it gets refreshed (after the iMacs get their updates).

I just hope when the get around to it, they don't drink too much of the Thunderbolt kool-aid and get rid of the HDMI port...

Agreed. It'll hopefully be the 2012 Mini that has a quad-core (Ivy Bridge). If not 2012 then it shouldn't be any later than 2013, but that's speculating.

I don't think that's likely to happen this time. The 13" MBP only supports one display via the Thunderbolt port. I expect the Mini will be the same, so replace the MDP with Thunderbolt and keep the HDMI. At least that's what I'm hoping for.

my 2 cents:

I think they`ll keep the case/superdrive as is.
I also think they`ll move to i5/i7 sandybridge but use Intels HD3000
integrated graphics.

Discrete card would be nice but I really don`t see it happening.
Thunderbolt port is also a definite.
HDMI will stay, too many people buy these as HTPC`s for them to remove it.

Personally, I'd rather see two TBolt ports as they're more versatile (with adapters). HDMI is only useful for TVs. I'm not crazy about the idea of daisy-chaining several devices so I hope all Macs eventually have more than one TBolt port. My prediction: new minis in August.

a pair of t-bolts would be very nice

The best solution would be 2 TB ports, but include a TB -> HDMI adapter in the box, so that HDMI can still be called a feature.
Ah, that would be a good decision. I think that would be the best thing to happen too.

New Mac Mini

It probably still will be the slow HD but it will start at 500 GB

The Ram will be 4Gigs

It will probably have a I3 and possibly an I5 but highly doubt the latter half

Thunderbolt technology

but I could actually see Apple skip updating this model and just reducing the price

I don't think Apple will skip updating the model. They really do need to move it on from using a Core 2 Duo processor. It is in great need of a performance boost. Between the early 09 Mini and the 2010 Mini, there's really only been a spec bump and a redesign. The Mac Mini is due for a significant performance boost.

I'm keeping my late-2009 mini for now, but I just bought a new MBP tonight and the speed differences for processor intensive tasks are stark. The mini needs the same i5 processor update, ASAP!

I'm hoping the same thing, because tracking down the right mini-DP to HDMI cables (that support audio) can still be a hassle. HDMI to HDMI cables are everywhere.

As of this evening, I can confirm that a mini-DP to HDMI cable (or adapter) works just as well with the new MBP Thunderbolt port as it does with the mini-DP port on my mini. OTOH, Apple has been going to great lengths to eliminate extra in the box adapters, dongles, remotes, etc. so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

If you have EyeTV how does watching HDTV with progressive scan go? Can the new MBP handle that fine?

I'm not so sure now, because I've since read that the Thunderbolt port on the Mini (assuming it gets one) may be able to support two displays. On the 13" MBP it's one less because of the internal display.

Well Apple did say that mini-DP adapters would work with the TB port.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. Although annoying if we have to I guess we can buy extra adaptors.

I think the i5 will be an upgrade option.

I wouldn't even consider one unless it had, at the very least, an i5 and a Radeon card. Though the 6490 is far too weak.

MacMini = Macbook = Macbook Pro 13"

For years.

Hence dual core sandybridge and no discrete GPU.
Stop hoping for more. It just can't happen in that form factor, or it would become hot and noisy.

Either way (intel or amd gpu), the new mini won't have GPU-accelerated Plex and Flash. Right? Since the OSX video acceleration framework is only supported on nvidia cards (9400M, 320M, GT330M).

That may change with Lion, though.

MY DREAM IS:

1) 2011 mac mini refresh first (April/May)
2) Mac Os X 10.7 Lion in June
3) 2011 mac mini REFURBS in August... with 10.6.x preinstalled and a free "drop-in" disk of OS X 10.7.

Reslult: 2 OS's for the price of one.... I did this with my "Late 2009" Mini.. 10.5 preinstalled plus free 10.6 drop-in disk.

Hey, I live for the cheap thrills!

Exactly. Apple buys chips in bulk and then spreads them through the range.

I'm hoping i5 min.

I'm waiting for the new Mac mini's.
Recently sold my iMac 20" and bought a 27" LED Cinema Display to hook it up with my 13" MacBook Pro.
But when the new Mac mini comes out, I will definitely buy one.
