so instead of restarting via the apple menu, I need to do a forced shutdown via the power button each time?
Hmm, that line isn't doing anything for me in terminal, I'm just copying and pasting it, should I be doing something before that?
no worries, I just appreciate the help
Edit: Okay so I had a weird system crash (who would have thunk it on a developer beta) that forced me to reinstall Yosemite. After doing so, I went through and redid everything but this time with the reboots and what do ya know, everything works now, Handoff worked immediately. Thanks!
Just the 2012 MBP bluetooth/airport card thats compatible with the early 2011 MacBook Pro, once I went through the kext process that Manic Harmonic detailed (with the reboots) it just started working. I'd give you the link to the eBay auction I used but it has ended and it looks like they just replaced it with the older card.

Yes, Airdrop now fully functions. Your not stuck with just older Macs.
I would go back and make sure the steps were followed correctly.
Since Handoff is working I would assume you did it correctly.
What does kextstat | grep AirPort return?
And card info?

it could just be a Beta Bug with my ip5.. !
So, it makes total sense that wireless "ac" isn't actually needed for this since it isn't in iPhones yet. Apple puts in a check to make sure you have BT 4.0 and WiFi "ac" then uses the BT4.0 to start handshake but then uses WiFi "N" to do the work.
So very like them. Hopefully someone can do a similar fix in GM. With a pretty 1 click installer for people frightened of terminal.
I have USB BT 4.0 ready to start production. Combined with this hack, should enable on many machines. Will be interesting how many different machines/WiFi cards will be able to work.
Toleda also works on this stuff, hopefully you guys can dovetail your work together.
Good job !!!
Can someone say What apple Part numbers are know to work is it only one particular number or do all the cax cards work
i have early 2011 17" MBP
thanks for any info or links
From what I've seen if it has the "CAX" at the end of the long part number and not just the "AX" then it works. The XXX-XXXX number on the other side of the card is very inconsistent.
The "AX" cards DO NOT work as they are the cards that are pre-installed in at least the early 2011 MBP's.
Thanks guys, finally I know how to do it right. Below is my steps:-
1) open Terminal type sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1"
2) reboot your MBP
3) your wifi will not be working at this moment, replace the file IO80211Family.kext in Go>Computer>System>Library>Extension
4) open Terminal type as below:-
sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext
sudo chmod -R 644 /System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext
sudo kextcache -system-prelinked-kernel
sudo kextcache -system-caches
5) now reboot your MBP again.
6) now you will see System Preferences>General> will have handoff enable option
7) open Terminal type kextstat | grep AirPort
Now you will see
kextstat | grep AirPort
130 0 0xffffff7f82c62000 0x5df000 0x5df000 com.apple.driver.AirPort.Brcm4360 (900.14.2) <129 47 46 12 7 6 5 4 3 1>
133 0 0xffffff7f83241000 0x1f3000 0x1f3000 com.apple.driver.AirPort.Brcm4331 (800.20.24) <129 46 12 7 5 4 3 1>
You're DONECheers.

I have replaced the Airport card with BT4CAX type. And run as u said in Terminal
but the Handoff was still disappeared.

What's wrong with it?
Thanks, you are right. I compared both numbers (original card to new one) and they are the same... Looks like that guy sold me the wrong card, although he asserted this one supports Bluetooth 4.0.
gunightess,
Follow those steps again, make sure you restart each time as indicated within the steps. I had better luck powering down instead of restarting then using the physical button to reboot.
My mac had a grey screen for several minutes so don't panic. but as always it is a beta and make sure you backup before trying anything.
