iOS 11.3.1. It seems that my 2 year old 2016 iPad Pro has become unresponsive to touch. I frequently have to touch buttons multiple times for them to register and swiping and scrolling is generally a pain. It’s almost as if the software is too cpu intensive and it makes the iPad lag. I have reinstalled iOS 11.3.1 and restored as a new iPad and that did not fix the issue. Has anyone else experienced issues like this on a 2016 iPad Pro 12.9 and if so, how did you fix it? It seems the issue has sprung up since iOS 11.3 or maybe 11.3 is the software version when the screen started breaking, who knows. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

May be a silly question, but have you thoroughly cleaned the display? Sometimes some buildup on the screen can be registering as a touch, which can throw off the rest of the touch input.

I had the same problem with my second generation 12.9 pro on iOS <11.3.
I tried everything but in the end it was a hardware issue and the device was changed

This does appear to be a hardware issue. I’m about 2 years and 2 months into ownership. About 2 months past my 2nd year of Amex warranty. I wonder what it will cost to fix it.

2 of my launch date iPad Pro 10.5 had the same issue. Apple Store Covent Garden swapped them last week because of my battery issues. New ones are perfect. This is a common fault with iPad Pros that almost nobody knows about.

I think so too

They probably won't. A near fix is to disable multi finger gestures in Settings/Multitasking.

That does seem to help. Thanks. This seems to point to a software issue right?

No. It is still a hardware issue I think. Neither of my new iPad Pros that I got as replacements have this issue even with that option enabled.

My 2017 12.9 that i got in December has been doing this over the last two weeks. Hard resets have been the only way to get it working again. Although since i installed the newest update 2 days ago it has not happened so waiting to see if the issue is resolved before i swap it for a new one.

Same thing with the first 2017 12.9 I bought (and returned for a different reason) in early April. Became intermittently unresponsive on day one (after I updated to 11.3 so unsure if that was related) but was resolved with a hard reset.

I ended up buying another 12.9 (and also returning for unrelated reasons) that did not exhibit the behavior during the two weeks I had it.

I’m thinking the OP should indeed consult with Apple, especially if near a location to do so in person.

That said, recalling a couple other glitches I encountered these past weeks while setting up/transferring settings/restoring/updating/resetting four different iPads, I would be more inclined to try a second or third reset/setting up as new before giving up.

No suggestions, but wanted to throw it out there that mine (original 12.9, late 2015 manufacture date) has started doing the same thing over the past month or so. I have a screen protector on it and wondered if that was the issue but it's good (I guess?) to see that others have the same issue.

Seeing that this is something that's cropping up only lately for all involved, perhaps it's software-related?

It isn’t software related. It is hardware.

Everything here points to software.

Same model of iPad, issues occurring around the same time.

The issues with your iPads - pertaining to your posts above - weren't even for the same iPad. You likely had defective 10.5 models, yes, but these are 12.9's that have all had the same issue crop up over the past month or so.

I'm not saying it's software *for sure*, but you're comparing apples to oranges.

I agree. This is starting to lean towards an 11.3.x software issue.

This thread is about issues pertaining to a 1st gen iPad Pro 12.9" unit. True Tone is only on 2nd gen iPad Pro 12.9 units.

Any updates from anyone? Is anyone else with a gen 1 IPP 12.9 experiencing this issue? It’s depressing to see my 2 year old device in this state. I also restored again as a new device and the problems continue to persist so it is either a software or a hardware issue. I can’t really tell at this point.

Mine doesn't bother me to the point where I feel like I need to take any action, at least not yet. So I'm not sure on any fixes.

Trust me. This is NOT software related. It is a hardware issue. Disable Multi finger gestures.

I did. It doesn’t do anything. My iPad is often laggy and unresponsive and it just started in the last month or so.

Just stumbled upon this thread. This problem has plagued me through 4 iPad pros. First three all having been broke or lost by myself before all avenues could be exhausted. The 4th and currently the one in use here is on its last step before I give up on them all together.

Oddly, my issues most noticeable show themselves at the on start of two multiplayer games i play. Both at the started points at the start of a game or after deaths which the starting point again is the lower left area. This area is kind of a safe area, once I’m out of that area in both games the problems happen far less.

Quick fixes on all iPads have been, home out of app, sleep and then Reenter game. Problem generally returns soon, if not the next death or game. But sometimes that’ll clear for an good little while, maybe a day before resurfacing.

Now back to what’s been done.

Reset all data
Reset and backed up
Reset and used iTunes to back up

Where the first three met their makers with me

Currently this one has been factory reset and have only downloaded one game. I’m awaiting to see if it resurfaces now. If so, with out an actually tech taking this issue seriously I’ve had it with these damn things.

I too have the same problem with iPad Pro. I have noticed it does it more in landscape mode, not so much in portrait.
