Angle of the iPad definitely triggers non touch recognition. I can consistently reproduce this by holding at 45 degrees then tipping the iPad away from me and at just beyond the horizontal it stops registering

I have the same issue with an unresponsive 2016 12.9” iPad Pro. In my case it happens mostly when I use it while it is charging. But sometimes it happens at random. Moistening the fingers sometimes makes it better. Cleaning the screen seems to make no difference. But when it is on the charger then it is really unresponsive.

I do not have these issues on my iPhone 7.

In addition the battery life on my iPad sucks. I suspect a bad battery as the charge declines rapidly from more than 30% charge down to 10%. I use the iPad mainly for reading on my Kindle app, web browsing, email and Twitter. Twitter really sucks the battery dry. I need to recharge it sometimes more than twice per day.

I am having this sort of issue with an iPad pro 10.5". It is very frustrating, as the iPad seems to randomly ignore commands from time to time... Trying to disable True Tone for now.

iOS 11.3.1. It seems that my 2 year old 2016 iPad Pro has become unresponsive to touch. I frequently have to touch buttons multiple times for them to register and swiping and scrolling is generally a pain. It’s almost as if the software is too cpu intensive and it makes the iPad lag. I have reinstalled iOS 11.3.1 and restored as a new iPad and that did not fix the issue. Has anyone else experienced issues like this on a 2016 iPad Pro 12.9 and if so, how did you fix it? It seems the issue has sprung up since iOS 11.3 or maybe 11.3 is the software version when the screen started breaking, who knows. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

This is happening to me on a new 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 256GB Wifi. HOWEVER, a reboot fixes it. So in my case, the issue is definitely software related. It's happened 2 times since I got it on launch day, and I'm not sure yet what causes it.

I seem to have these issues on my 2018 12.9” Pro when my Pencil is in my bag and not attached to the device. If I let the pencil ride around on my iPad for the day, the touch sensitivity issues basically disappear. It’s very strange, and this leads me to believe it is hardware related.

I disabled True Tone two weeks ago, and that *mostly* solves the issue, but still the screen is unresponsive at times. In my case it smells like a software bug or collection of bugs (resource management or others).

I also suspect software. No matter when this happens for me, the screen always responds to a swipe up gesture to show the dock / home screen / multitasking. It’s bizarre and hopefully improves with 12.1.1. I’d hate to try to reproduce this at an Apple store.

Yes, this also seems to affect the 2018 pros. But! After updating to 12.1.1 on my 2018 12.9” Pro, I am seeing fewer touch issues. It could just be placebo, but in the past 24 hours I haven’t had any frustrating touch inconsistency. Crossing my fingers.

Is this a recent thing? Because my 16 month 2nd gen 12.9 has started doing this constantly in the last few days. I really hope it's a software issue.

No it’s not. And it’s a hardware issue.

I’d wager it’s a combination of hardware and software. I’ve had some touch sensitivity issues on my 3rd gen iPad Pro, but as of 12.1.1 they have mysteriously disappeared. Did they fix it? Is it a side effect of some cache being reset with an os update? I don’t know, but I can tell you those issues have been absent a week now.

I had a similar problem. But after much searching I was pointed in the direction of it my being my case that's the issue. I removed my Otterbox case and the intermittent unresponsiveness all but disappeared. Who knew? Looks like some sort of interference between the plastic and the glass can cause phantom swipes or activate palm rejection. Weird.

I have the same issue on iPad Pro 2nd gen. Even worse! I replaced the iPad and the new replacement has the same problem! I’m using genuine Apple charger, Apple Smart Cover and the Pencil. No external case. All these things cost me a ton of money and now I’m out of warranty, out of luck and out of money for the replacement. Also as I see new iPad Pro 2018 has the same issue for some people.

Nothing helped me, I tried hard reset, numerous restarts, locking orientation, switching Airdrop off, switching notifications off - a lot of things. It starts to happen after 2-10 minutes of usage no matter what. The touch screen becomes unresponsive for a couple of seconds during random tasks.

I have a friend with the same issue and he now says switching off 120hz refresh helps. Didn’t try that one yet because it would slow down the iPad.

iPad was my main tool so this is very frustrating. Apple what is going on?

has this happened more on ios 12 than 11 or any pattern there software wise?

A worn out battery that has expanded causes the display to go unresponsive. Mine lasted 8 months and was replaced with apple care plus. These devices are too thin, they will not last many years.

I tend to agree that it's not just a hardware issue. If it were, the issue would be more widespread and wouldn't come back so quickly to those who get replacements. The fact that people who experience it and have the issue return after replacement sure seems to point towards a software issue since it stands to reason that people fall back onto the same applications and workflows with their replacement device.

So I just unboxed a new 12.9. No screen protector, using keyboard folio .
My screen has gone unresponsive now twice. Once at setup, and now after setup. Been up and running a whopping hour, and not sure what’s up.

Just take this back as defective?

My household has 2 iPP 12.9 (1st Gen 2015) devices. iOS 11 was a disaster. I truly thought that both iPads were broken, it was so bad. In reality, it was iOS. You could see the device not reacting to touch because it was processing something in the background. I tracked it down to an app that I play (Mastermind) and Apple News (that was a hot mess for a while). I would close both apps after using them. The iPads stabilized (both of them) upon late iOS 11 updates and are humming along nicely on iOS 12.

Definitely software and iOS for us.

On my previous iPad (replaced by Apple) I had this issue reappear after the hard reset on the clean device without iCloud activated. So it may have been a hardware issue.

For me it's the opposite - the unresponsiveness appeared right after update to iOS 12. Also I don't think there's a connection to the particular 3rd party software in my case. Maybe there are different types of this issue. How did you experience it? On my side every 10-15 seconds iPad doesn't register 1 or two touches. So when you start for example zooming in, it stops in the middle because it thinks there's only 1 finger. It's not like a delay or processing on the background. It's more like a touchscreen problem (on 2 consecutive devices).
