On my previous iPad (replaced by Apple) I had this issue reappear after the hard reset on the clean device without iCloud activated. So it may have been a hardware issue.

For me it's the opposite - the unresponsiveness appeared right after update to iOS 12. Also I don't think there's a connection to the particular 3rd party software in my case. Maybe there are different types of this issue. How did you experience it? On my side every 10-15 seconds iPad doesn't register 1 or two touches. So when you start for example zooming in, it stops in the middle because it thinks there's only 1 finger. It's not like a delay or processing on the background. It's more like a touchscreen problem (on 2 consecutive devices).
We would try to scroll in safari and it just wouldn’t do anything. The worst offender was safari in truth because that is what we use the most. After about 5 or so seconds it might start responding. Or we would quit the app. Sometimes we would reboot. Hasn’t happened forever.

Yeah I have the same issues on iOS 12.1 :(

has this happened more on ios 12 than 11 or any pattern there software wise?

So I tried switching off 120Hz as my friend suggested (Settings > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Limit Frame Rate) . It does influence the problem but I'm not sure if it helps. If I turn it on the issue goes away for some time. But it comes back again randomly so I turn it off and again it works for some time.

Seems like touchscreen needs some kind of reset or change of its parameters to come back to normal. And the problem comes back all the time.

Was it bad on iOS 11 also?

The only
Thing my 2017 has had happen is charging and tilting it a certain way I’ve wxperiwnced it not responding to touch. But for the most part mine still works great. 11.3.1

No problems with the Smart Keyboard either. No bright spot or flash lighting

I feel like I hit the jackpot for once

Knock on wood

Had this problem on mine and I submitted warranty repair just before the 1 year warranty was up. I just had to click through a few questions and got my RMA and prepaid box sent. Not sure if it’s because it’s a common issue or are all warranty repair requests so simple. No need any diagnosis from their tech support.

No, didn’t have this problem on iOS 11.

I replaced mine under warranty and after around 2 months I have the same problem with the new replacement.

I still suspect this is an ios12 problem. It's weird this would happen out of the blue, in the last few weeks for me, soon after I updated to ios12. I don't see any bulges in the casing, so I don't think it's a battery problem. I'm going to try downgrading to ios 11 and hope that fixes things.

I'm sorta stuck because I really depend on my ipp for school / work. And the third generation sounds like it has so many problems, I don't want to upgrade.

So I did some tests. I tried different software switches but the problem always comes back after awhile.

And my friend started having the same problem with unresponsive touch after removing his hard case (unknown brand) from the iPad Pro (2nd gen). As soon as he puts it back the problem seems to disappear. Also the problem worsens when the external charger is connected. So it made me think it may be a problem with static electricity. How about spraying the iPad with antistatic spray. Does it help? Also putting it in the case that covers the whole body? Can anybody try it? I'm gonna buy some spray for me as well and see how it goes.

Interesting that this is such a wide spread issue, yet not a word from Apple. This problem started suddenly on my 1st gen 9.7 ipad pro, which has worked flawlessly up to this point. Most annoying was the virtual keyboard, my typed words constantly missing letters due to unresponsive moments. After some thought, I realised this issue arose around the same time I installed a particular game, for which the unresponsiveness was most noticable. I deleted the game, hard reset the device, and my ipad instantly returned to a working state, with no touch issues thereafter. I have no idea why this particular game would cause such problems, but seems it did. And for the record, disabling gestures, true tone, bluetooth etc. and/or altering angle/orientation did absolutely nothing to alleviate the problem on my device.

Just out of curiosity what game was it?

In my case the issue returned even after a hard reset. On two different iPads. It did look like it went away but after a while it always comes back.

Though I didn’t try antistatic spray yet.

The game was Godus. The odd thing is, I had the same game installed on my previous iPad Air 2 and had no issues at all. Admittedly, I noticed the in game performance difference immediately, but didn’t associate it with the touch screen issue until a bit later. Was definitely the source of my problem though, I’ve not had a single issue since deleting it 3 weeks ago. I did several hard reboots prior to deletion and whereas it did temporarily alleviate the problem, it always reoccurred, whether or not I opened the game. My situation is slightly different though ... my device is the 9.7 version, whereas all other complaints are relative to the larger version. It’s feasible that in Apples quest for thinner lighter devices, a lamination fault has developed in the larger devices due to flexing and a lack of structural support. But in my instance, experience leads me to believe the issue overall is a combination of software and hardware, and slight incompatibilities between the both. These types of faults are very hard to diagnose. Seems to me IOS apps are not as well sandboxed as they used to be, which is a bit unfortunate, in my opinion. I value reliability above everything else.

Thanks, I see. Never had this game installed. Unfortunately in my case even hard reset where all the contents get erased including software and games doesn’t help.

I think heat might be a culprit if it means the display is separating from the lamination.

My 2017* 12.9 got ridiculously hot during some drawing sessions and within 8 weeks began to get wonky in the touch department.

Not 2019.

iOS 11.3.1. It seems that my 2 year old 2016 iPad Pro has become unresponsive to touch. I frequently have to touch buttons multiple times for them to register and swiping and scrolling is generally a pain. It’s almost as if the software is too cpu intensive and it makes the iPad lag. I have reinstalled iOS 11.3.1 and restored as a new iPad and that did not fix the issue. Has anyone else experienced issues like this on a 2016 iPad Pro 12.9 and if so, how did you fix it? It seems the issue has sprung up since iOS 11.3 or maybe 11.3 is the software version when the screen started breaking, who knows. Thanks in advance for any guidance.
Your covered for 6 years for hardware issue under consumer law 2015 , apple told me themselves
