Linux drivers indicate that base core clocks are 1154 MHz for P10.

A little nerdy question. What is the bottom boarder of TFLOPs performance when any type of machine is considered to be HPC solution?

25 TFLOPs? More?

Supercomputer rankings (e.g. http://www.top500.org/ ) are based on FP64 benchmarks. The last (#500) system on the list is just over 200 Tflops.

"HPC" can cover other applications - a machine-learning or AI system can be more concerned with FP32 (or even FP16) performance. I don't think that there's a meaningful threshold as to what's HPC and what's not.

Nvidia's DGX-1 is 170 Tflops FP16.

Here is an interesting rumor tidbit from VRWorld:

"According to sources in the know, the Polaris for PlayStation Neo is clocked at 911 MHz, up from 800 MHz on the PS4. The number of units should increase from the current 1152. Apparently, we might see a number higher than 1500, and lower than 2560 cores which are physically packed inside the Polaris 10 GPU i.e. Radeon R9 400 Series."

This is the first time I've seen anyone mention specifically 2560 cores on Polaris 10. So based on what Nvidia was able to do going from the Titan X to the 1080, lets try and figure out what sort of performance we may see on Polaris 10.

Titan X -> 1080
Die features (billion) 8 -> 7.1
Die size (mm2) 601 -> ~320
Base clock speed (Mhz) 1000 -> 1607
Cores 3072 -> 2560
GFLOPS 6144 (base) -> ~8200 (base) ~9000 (boost)

Just a note here, when Nvidia quotes its performance on the 1080, its calculated at the boost frequency.

So lets assume that Polaris 10 is more akin to shrinking Hawaii

AMD 390X -> Polaris 10
Die features (billion) 6.2 -> 5.5?
Die size (mm2) 438 -> ~232
Base Clock speed (Mhz) 1050 -> 1400? 1500?
Cores 2816 -> 2560
GFLOPS 5900 -> 7200? 7700?

I've indicated my assumptions with ?. This lands us with performance somewhere between the 390X and the Fury X. If they can get this in the power envelope of 125 - 150 W it will be a pretty good chip. The most uncertainty here is the final clock speeds. AMD has tended to keep them lower and if that is still true that would decrease performance from what I have guessed.

Polaris 10 probably won't touch the Nvidia 1080, but it would likely beat the 1070. Another note is that we don't know about any sort of architectural enhancements from AMD and how those will compare to the architectural enhancements Nvidia has made.
With the previous release of Mac Pro ... I know we could custom order the gpu. Do you think Apple will have something else in stores for high end?

Did they have the High-End options in store?

When I used to go, you could barely find the base model.

I meant like....d300 500 700 and with custom cores...and etc.

it's also like buying mbp..with custom gpu...if you get high end one..you can better type gpu.

Personally, I guess there is no way for me to buy into the trash can if it'll still exist after wwdc this year, considering being able to upgrade your alu Mac Pro with the new GTX 1080 for example vs being stuck with average firepros or whatever they will put in their new model.

I've entertained the idea of considering a powerful trashcan if it gets upgraded after this year's wwdc but with the gtx 1080 being launched and myself thinking about being able to build it in, I don't know, it is really not a satisfying thought.

Hmm...that's true. I guess 1080 gtx changed many people's mind as well as polaris 10. we will have to wait and see how Tim is gonna play it out.

Apple gets AMD's GPUs in custom packaging, i.e. the circuit boards that the GPUs are mounted on. Mounted on those boards are standard AMD GPUs. The D300 is Pitcairn (aka the R9 7850) and the D500 and D700 are Tahiti (aka the 7950 and 7970).

Keep in mind that you dont have a choice (whats new) than going for dual GPU. Not many programs can work with SLI setup. Adobe even warns for performance issues in Photoshop. If you want some power, you need the D700 which cost you a lot of money, for average GPU these days. The 1080 is awesome card from what i have seen, read an hear about. Just like the Polaris. Its still on paper and we will need to wait for real benches. I will go for a nvidia setup because my tools like Cuda (most of the creative content making tools) so i need to leave the Apple platform. But you could wait for a new Mac Pro, if it comes anyway. No information. They keep the hype / mystery alive and don't care to inform there customers. Very unfriendly.

If there will be no update at the WWDC, would a lot of old Apple users not scratch there head? But that said, some will always find a way to defend the brand, no mater what.

True. They do that, indeed, when it comes to iPhones, iPads, portless laptops etc. :)

However, while I'm reading this specific thread with high interest, I'm convinced that it is consisted by serious professionals, people related directly or indirectly with the IT market (like I do, as well). I don't think these people will forgive apple that easily if it pulls the plug from nMP.

Not sure that no announcement at WWDC necessarily means they've pulled the plug. The next MP will likely be meant for users of the 2013 nMP, not those who stayed on the cMP. Most people with 2013 nMP's bought them in mid 2014, and they're still getting very useful life out of them. If there is one this year, at least we'll know the upgrade cycles. If they announce the new one this year, it means no new model or update till 2019. If they wait till next year, no new model or update till 2021. Either way, for people who plan their purchases and replacements rationally, it means that whenever they announce it, there will be a splurge of buying, because it's a very safe purchase. Absolutely no worries that Apple will announce a new model or update a year after you purchase yours. Because Apple needs to announce a spike in Mac sales, I think it's more likely that Apple will opt to release new models this year.

There are some rumors floating around that Polaris is delayed and that AMD and its partners won't have anything to show by Computex in early June. Apparently it failed validation and was unable to clock past 850 Mhz reliably. There are also rumors that either Vega has been pushed up to October or Polaris will be launched in October. I wonder if AMD regrets going with GlobalFoundries and not their normal partner TSMC.

These rumors are very sketchy at best, so take it for what it is. If true, it doesn't bode well for a June announcement of a new Mac Pro.

Validation? It would be credible IF AMD and GLoFo was on the stage of silicon design. GPUs are already in full production...
It is AMD's fault that these types of rumors are floating around. Author of the rumor offers Nvidia hardware...
Secondly, AIB's did not had silicon from AMD when they were launching Fury last year. First AIB's models were 2 months after the presentation. Because most of the designs were... reference.

We report so many other rumors around here there is no reason not to post this one. AMD has been pretty quiet considering the longer they wait to announce Polaris the more orders they lose to Nvidia's 1070/1080.

A few months ago we thought AMD had a multi-month lead on getting its next gen GPUs out first. Since then Nvidia has announced 2 new GPUs (P100 and GP104). Hopefully the rumors about a Polaris delay turn out to be unfounded.

And, Lisa Su in a stream for investors have said that Polaris is still on schedule for launch this summer.

Yes, indeed.

It has not ceased to amaze me.

So they are doing us a favor by waiting a long time so that we can accurately read the tea leaves?

Not looking good for AMD.
