I almost never use my device perfectly flat, so it’s either 30-ish or 60-ish degrees using the Smart Cover.

The situation seems to have improved slightly for me, or I have found a way around the problem. The edges of the screen are more reliably responsive, so if a touch doesn’t register near the middle I switch to using the edge and this seems to get it working again. Not a solution, but a work around.

I’m here with a December 2015 12.9 and January 2016 12.9. One is on 11.2 and the other on 10.whatever. Both are experiencing the touch disease. I can fix it by rotating but sometimes I have to. Rotate every few seconds until I give up. Just turned off muli gesturing. Haven’t reinstalled from scratch but - 2 different ipads on 2 different ios versions coming up with the touch disease? If this is hardware, we won’t be buying ipads again. $1800 in devices that go bad in less than 2 years, yikes. My son’s air 2 is about 3 years old and doesn’t experience any of this. Our prior 4 ipads that were 3&4 yrs old never experienced this. At a loss.

went to the apple store. was not able to replicate the issue on demand. Nothing showed up on diagnostics, but they replaced the unit anyway. Will try it out for a few days and update with results.

After inspecting it, apple says my iPad is defective. They are shipping a replacement
Did they do a physical inspection or only the normal diagnostics? As I have the same problem but when I did the normal diagnostics it showed no faults , but when the guy at Apple pressed on top of the iPad the touch screen freezed

I think a physical inspection but not sure, as i had to ship it to them (no apple stores in the island where i live)

I have just requested my second 2017 ipad pro 12.9 replacement. The first one was almost ok (10to15 seconds unresponsive sometimes but mostly just here and there) but if you used the attachable keyboard you may not have noticed the issue. The screen keyboard with its missed typing is the most noticeable.
My second unit has worked well for about 2 months but has started to do it again. I have reinstalled latest ios with no apps but still a problem. I have lost faith in this ipad but hope third time it is ok.
I requested a new one rather than refurbished as I bet they test the boards as ok but has the underlying issue.
I will let you know if it is fixed this time...

Just got my 2017 12.9” iPad Pro replaced under warranty. Mine had got to the point where using it in bed was next to impossible, the touchscreen would just not respond properly. Flat on a table it was absolutely fine. Weird. I also noticed that it seemed to be worse when I was holding the bezel near where the camera lens is on the back.

Anyway, got a new one, will report back if I see any issues again.

I have Done the obvious: hard reset, done the factory restore, tried a couple of the setting changes that have been suggested and I still have the intermittent touch screen freeze problem. I have an iPad Pro 2 512 GB cellular. It takes me days to restore the iPad because of the large amount of data I retain on the iPad.

I just hate going to the Apple Store for support Since they have a tendency to figure unless it’s an obvious issue that it is a user problem. I have to tell them that I’m not technically illiterate and have 39 years experience in the business.

Interestingly I was talking to a friend with a gen-1 device at the weekend and he gets the same problem, too. I never experienced it with my gen-1, only the gen-2.

The problem seems to be more significant when charging the device, too.

Has anyone with a replacement device experienced re-occurance so far?

I have, after a few months. iOS 12 doesn’t fix it

Mine has touch screen issues with safari now, it got so bad I could not do school work. So I had to do DFU for the fourth time since buying on launch day. Do not even want to draw on it now.

Even after the DFU and forced upgrade to 11.4, I have this touch disease issue.

Honestly, I am at the point where I just want to trade it in for credit. If the issues continue to flare up under 11.4 I will take it in a month (too much going on now).

Damn! I was hoping iOS 12 might help, too.

I wonder if the shielding on the battery is defective somehow? The problem is significantly worse when charging, in my experience.

I have noticed iPads giving touchscreen trouble when plugged-in to the charger for years. It certainly isn’t limited to the 12.9” Pro models.

My replacement 12.9” 512 cellular Gen 2 model is free of touchscreenitis so far!

There is another thread discussing this sort of thing here. Sounds like there might be a longevity issue with this generation of device. Hopefully your screen stays responsive for a long time!

I have been having a similar issue for months. The screen would not respond to any touch input. However, the pencil and a hardware bluetooth keyboard would still work just fine.

I had hoped that upgrading to 12 would resolve as the install of 11 seemed to coincide with the issue. However, that install did not fix.

For the last hour or so what has seemed to fixit is removing the smart cover. It’s a genuine Apple branded cover and has been on the ipad since purchasing them both together last year.

I’m not sure why the Apple smart cover would cause the issue, but it’s removal has proven successful. fingers crossed.

Glen

If your device is anywhere close to being in warranty and has no external damage then I would take it to Apple as soon as possible. They replaced my device with no quibbles even though it was more than a year old.

Mine is over a year old, but I didn’t buy applecare. There’s no damage tho. It’s like new. I’ve got the light leaking on one edge of the screen too but i’ve learned to ignore it.

Bad news... removing the smart cover did not resolve permanently. It’s back to intermittently stopping touch response. Ugh.

Had the same exact problem with 12.9" 2nd gen ipad pro. Touchscreen will randomly unresponsive to hand touch. Apple pencil always works though.
Went back to apple store where i bought it (singapore). They insisted it is software related problem. Even after some explanation they only agreed to "inspect" the ipad further for 7-14 days and even then they can't guarantee if they will replace the unit. Had enough. Sold it to a person who is going to mainly use it with apple pencil.

I didn't even bother changing via applecare route since i didn't want to pay the deductible and had planned to downgrade to 10" ipad pro anyway.

Shame! My previous ipad was ipad air 2 and in 3 years of heavy usage never once it threw a fit. Now i just hope whatever apple has for new ipad in 2018 won't have the same issue, or any issue even.
