Just configured out a top end 27" 8GB (assuming we can still add our own memory-- cant tell from the photos in the store) in the US store and it looks like it is about a 9% price drop vs teh one I had previously configured!!!

old new
base 27 imac 2,099 2099 *edu pricing
i7 processor 225 180
1Tb SSD 540 540
4gb Video card 225
8 gb video card 0

total 3089 2819

Hmmm... just added the following specs into my cart:

  • 4.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
  • 64GB 2400MHz DDR4
  • 512GB SSD
  • Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB video memory
  • Magic Mouse 2
  • Magic Keyboard - British
Comes to £3,869.

I'm not so sure I can validate getting this iMac when I know the iMac Pro is around the corner... will $5,000 = £5,000? I could still go for it, but it seems like quite the layout. That said, Vega GPU vs old tech GPU that isn't as good as others that are already out... may just wait. Hard to when it'd make my life much easier for six months, but then waiting six months to get a much better Mac seems worth the wait.

with such display specs, if target display mode is supported, then I will get it for MacBook pro 2016 as a display, and a home pC for the family

Does anyone know what the base line iMac Pro specs were for $5,000? I want to compare to the iMac I have in my basket if possible please? Thanks!

I got a top end one about a year ago. New one isn't for me for quite awhile. I'll be honest. I don't like the all in one concept (after ports, speakers, mic, it's not that tidy). I'd love to switch to a mac pro in the future with a 5k monitor but only if Apple gets er done. However, the metal 2 and talk of external graphics could win me back later. Or even get me thinking of an MPB + external graphics + monitor.

If anyone finds 3rd party ddr4 that will work here at the new higher speeds (2400), let us know.

ordered some sodimm 2400 on B & H. I think it will fit. Much less expensive there.

I plan on holding out for the iMac Pro. I'm very disappointed with the GPU options. I was really hoping to get a nVidia 1070 or 1080 performance equivalent, but we instead get a Radeon 580 that is about 5% below a 1060.

How do you know the performance of the Pro 580?

This will never happen.

Yep, which is why i wont be getting one.
I want just a single device that i can connect an appleTV and Xbox to for each of the kids room.

Just means the kids will be getting top end PCs not Macs.

A couple of random things I noticed:

The top end model only comes with the option for 91W CPU (i5-7600K and i7-7700K). Therefore you cannot get the lower TDP processor (i5 in 2015) and the top graphics anymore in order to reduce wattage (potentially lower heat and noise).

However, if the top GPU is more energy-efficient than last year's, then perhaps that will offset the situation (likely case).

.. and:

They tout new improved speakers for iMac Pro. No such mention for the new iMac - it could be that they didn't bother to mention it, but it's a slight bummer if the new speakers are reserved for iMac pro only.

Thank you very much, I got it now. Sometimes you can't see what is right in front of your eyes :p
There's usually nothing of material value in these pop-over text blurs as it's usually just marketing stuff. I'm surprised that this info isn't in the tech specs.

i wonder if the amd 580 will heat like the M295x did

Just noticed on the Canadian Apple site, the 21" top end 4K iMac lists the GPU as the Radeon Pro 560 (not the 580).

Can anyone confirm on their country's site?

Can anyone find the full memory specs? They're 2400mhz DDR4 - but trying to find the right model / pin configuration on Amazon.

Thankfully 2400 is more standard than 1867, should be even easier to find compatible options.
