I have mine ordered:

  • 8GB 2400MHz DDR4

now that they have USB-C port with TB3, can a new iMac 27" 5K be used as a target display? Anybody know if it's mentioned somewhere?

Someone asked Apple Customer Service and apparently they said no https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7974952

Oh dear, I only went and bought a 27" 2TB fusion iMac 5 weeks ago. Really fed up now. Would love to send this back and get the latest model. From previously reading up on releases, I thought the iMacs weren't coming out till the end of the year.

It's the 27" 3.4ghz core i7, 16GB Ram, GeForce GTX 680MX 2048MB graphics, 2560x1440 screen and a 3TB Fusion drive. At the moment I'm contemplating getting one of these new iMacs or waiting until the rumoured redesign next year.

I have essentially this same setup, but with 32GB Ram and only a 1T fusion drive. Also curious to know if the new iMacs would be substantially faster? My plan has been to give my computer to my kids to replace the 2008 iMac they use and then get a new machine for myself.

Is there much of a difference between the Fusion Drive and SSD? The prices seem to be very different.

In general day-to-day use, probably not. Most read/write operations will likely be on the SSD portion unless you work in many applications or many data sets where the 32GB is not enough to hold it and it has to go to the (much) slower HDD.

My iMac is used for multiple things, sometimes i play games (not heavy intensive ones) I often do split views between two documents or safari and Pages, picture in picture is also something I use often. Most of my work is writing but I also edit podcasts and some videos that I take on my iPhone 7 with 4K enabled. My next iMac might be one of these that's why I've asked, the 3 TB option is much cheaper than the SSD 2TB or even the 1TB.

I personally only use SSDs now (I have a 1TB in my 2015 5K). For external storage of media I use a 5-drive RAID 6 Thunderbolt 2 enclosure.

Interesting, I chatted with Apple's support rep and they said yes

PS: the question I asked is- Hi I'm wondering if it's possible to use the newest model of 27-inch iMac as an external display for my MacBook Pro

very annoyed if iMac Pro is the only model in gray.
I'm sure that's going to be the case for awhile

Hmmm... just added the following specs into my cart:

  • 4.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz
  • 64GB 2400MHz DDR4
  • 512GB SSD
  • Radeon Pro 580 with 8GB video memory
  • Magic Mouse 2
  • Magic Keyboard - British
Comes to £3,869.

I'm not so sure I can validate getting this iMac when I know the iMac Pro is around the corner... will $5,000 = £5,000? I could still go for it, but it seems like quite the layout. That said, Vega GPU vs old tech GPU that isn't as good as others that are already out... may just wait. Hard to when it'd make my life much easier for six months, but then waiting six months to get a much better Mac seems worth the wait.
This is the model I ordered but went with 8 GB of RAM. I figure Crucial or OWC will have a better deal.

Does anyone know the memory details for the 27"? I know there are 4 SO-DIMM slots, and the 8GB configuration is 2x4GB. Is the 16GB 4x4GB or 2x8GB? How about the 32GB and 64GB?

Also, does anyone have an exact link to an Amazon page that sells DDR4 memory you could self upgrade?
Thanks
[doublepost=1496781957][/doublepost]Does anyone know the exact model numbers of the i5 and i7 CPU's that are in the 27"?
[doublepost=1496782012][/doublepost]Finally, does anyone know if the SSD's are M2, or PCI-Express, and do they use NVMe or just SATA?

daily user of a macbook pro 2011 (2.3ghz i5, 4gb RAM, 128gb SSD)

if I get a new imac with the non-SSD hard drive, is it going to feel slow despite the much improved processor and double RAM?

Is anyone going to consider not upgrading to any of the new iMacs but instead purchase a MacBook Pro as a desktop replacement?

I went back and forth between a 15 inch and a new iMac.

Went with the iMac for the screen size. Wish I could afford both!

I'm tempted to buy a 15" Pro to replace my iMac and rMBP, however like you I would prefer both. I might just buy and external screen for the MBP however my set up starts getting very expensive then... ugh

I'm doing the same 8GB with the memory. I figure I'll add two more 8GBs putting it at 24GB as it's not that much. I also am wondering about using Kingston as they have a lower CL rating...thought that probably is moot given the memory in the machine is likely going to slow it down.

Update:
I just ordered from OWC as they have lower CL rating...should get here on Friday or Saturday!

I was considering the OWC 16 GB deal to make 24 as well. Will pull the trigger today
