I just want them to make a professional desktop that's very powerful and sleek. Maybe add a space gray for a color as well. Would you guys get a darker silverish iMac? I think it would be pretty cool.

The delay is due to Intel. The fact that you might have to wait another month or two after the intel chip is available isn't that big a deal IMHO.
I agree. 1-2 months is fine.

2.5 year delay like the Mac Mini? Not cool. Apple is pissing on the Mac Mini.

Is this a delay or actually discontinued without saying...... it could easily have been updated but hasn't which says a lot really.

I don't think the Mac Mini has a place in the lineup anymore as it no longer needs to serve as a bridge to get Windows developers into iOS app development (they're already here and using Mac Pros or iMacs).*

And as for serving as the "entry level Mac for new customers", that role has for some time been filled by the MacBook Air and is now moving to the MacBook based on model sales figures.

* - Yes, I understand Apple themselves compiles iOS core builds on Mac Mini clusters, but they could easily do that on other hardware (Hackintoshes, for example).

I think we might see something crazy.

There's a rumor thats been persistent that AMD will enter into a cross license deal with Intel for GPU tech. One of the peculiar technologies that AMD has been pushing for the last few years is MCM & more particularly we have seen that manifest itself into HBM. But it isnt limited to that. You can stack other stuff onto MCM. Like a standalone GPU.

With Apple's insistence on thinner, lighter, etc. a MCM module where you can receive a Vega GPU and Intel's Kaby Lake on a single MCM can be particularly beneficial for Apple's general philosophy on products. This will have an enormous impact on design.

This would require Apple to pay a lot of attention to the Mac, which they don't see to do anymore.

The special early access to Intel chips was Steve Jobs doing. Tim Cook doesn't care.

I'm hoping this happens soon. ZZZZ I really need to get an iMac and am holding out. I seriously don't want to wait until June. :(
I had the very same dilemma - should I wait couple more months or just go and purchase an iMac right now. I found an offer from a tech store nearby for iMac 21.5" 2.8GHz late 2015 with 300$ discount and just purchased it. :) My old Macbook Pro 13" 2.7 i7 2011 paid out years ago and it was time for replacement.
The iMac I bought has more than decent performance - twice faster related to the Macbook Air 13" 2016, Macbook 12" 2016, and the recently announced Macbook Pro 2016.
I see no reason to wait for something that is not guaranteed when and will it be announced and be at the stores.

Well, I've given up on waiting for an new iMac. I decided to just live with my 13" Macbook Pro. After long consideration I really am not that "into" Apple macs anymore. They are ok but there isn't anything innovative like there used to be. Apple is now a large company with focus on mobile phone and turning into every other tech company (think Microsoft). Their stuff isn't inspiring anymore. I really used to just look forward to everything Apple would put out but now I'm just ho-hum on it. I'm going to use that money for something better than an new iMac.

So now i'm considering a new iMac but only if Apple have a different philosophy from the MacBook Pro - style over substance.

* One way could be to have an iMac 5K monitor separate from a sleek base unit that holds the computer components. This would allow a display and perhaps component upgradability. Although I get this diminishes the concept of an all-in-one.

* I would like it to have the option of a top of the range graphic card - or some means to upgrade it. When this iMac launched the graphics card was above average at best, which is shameful considering the machine should last 4 years minimum.

* The screen is so good it should be able to be used with other devices like games consoles so a HDMI port would be nice - and I don't see how that would diminish the Apple brand, if anything it would make the iMac a more intrinsic part of the home.

* Also, it's good that Apple is forward facing with new technologies such as Thunderbolt 3/ USB C, however there is NO excuse to not include one or two standard USB ports on a home computer.

This would be a copy of the Surface Studio. The Surface Studio still uses mobile GPUs even thought it has this design.

Not going to happen with the current design or a Surface Studio style design. Plus the Apple premium would be insane on a top end GPU.

Scaling is an issue. That would require additional hardware to scale 1080p or 4k content to 5k. Not likely going to happen.

Agreed, I hope they keep Ethernet and SD card slot. I don't require USB-A though. It's a dinosaur technology. I'd prefer 100% of the USB ports to be type-c 3.1 gen 2.

I am very curious to see what Apple comes up with. One thing is for sure - if RAM is soldered in the 27" I will not be buying it. I want to be able to upgrade it along the way like I have done with my current 2009. It started out with 4GB of RAM and a 1TB HDD. It now has 20GB RAM and a Fusion Drive, making it useful to this day even with more intense stuff.

I think that Apple will update the industrial design of the iMac with the next update and also make a full conversion to TB3/USB-C, based on what they are doing with their other products (MacBook Pro + Apple TV). I think, as many other here, that the main difference from an industrial design point of view will be a slimming down on the bezels. But I would love to see a G4 style with all the hardware at the base and just the screen poking up. However, I think that is very unlikely to happen.

Why if the USB-C does everything the standard USB does and more? - the port is at the back, no-one is going to see the adapter.

There's a very good excuse why a USBa port isn't required. Because anything that can plug into a usba port can plug into a USBC port with the right cable or an adapter. There's no need to have two different shaped ports to connect the same protocol.

You are assuming everyone has their iMac just in a desk environment with it's back to a wall (mine isn't). If that was the case then why is Apple so concerned with always making it thinner, or a single machined piece, or even aluminum?

I think they're doing that a lot better on the Mac Pro, which hasn't been updated since 2013.

That's all fine, but I don't know about you but I am not prepared to pay for multiple USB C to USB A adapters to use all my existing devices on a new iMac which will no doubt cost just as much as they do now, if not more. I'm hoping when USB C devices become commonplace, manufacturers will at the very least provide adapters in the box to ease the transition.

I would love to see Apple offer a 30-inch iMac, but I doubt it will ever happen. I'm generally happy with how my Late 2015 iMac is performing so I can't say I really want Apple to release new iMacs right now, but it's certainly surprising they haven't been updated yet.

Can you (or me) just use a wired keyboard with two USB a ports on them? I'm not sure if those keyboard ports have enough power to run everything you can plug into them.

Nope... the power draw from the Apple USB (2.0, btw) keyboard hub is limited. Plus it gets pretty tangled with wires. Those port are mainly for dongles or pen drives.

I get the feeling that we won't see anything till at least the fall or later. But who knows...

Make it big enough for real GPU's.
Touch screen!
They could fit real GPUs in now if they wanted. But it would require a new cooling system and for them to move to Nvidia.

That wasn't all a delay, Tim Cook has extended product refresh cycles, and the Mac mini seems to be on a 2-3 year cycle since 2012.
