Remember a while back when Cook was addressing concerns in the pro market, said something like "We're very committed to Pros, we understand needs for performance, our iMacs are our best desktops ever." At the time I remember thinking, hmm technically the Pro is better, why's he namedropping iMac. I thought he was hinting at their fundamental shift away from MacPro towards iMac. Now in hindsight I think he was just saying, hey, our current (year old) iMac is still good enough, that's what we're doing, don't expect anything new for a while.

No new iMac today. Though honestly, speaking as an owner of a 2015 395X 5K, I'd rather wait till October for the latest AMD Series 11 GPUs than get slightly better Series 10 GPUs now.

The lack of an update yesterday could be a good thing, it could mean a new design or that Apple are waiting for the latest processors and graphics cards. I don't see them doing much else with the screen at the moment it's already a 5K display. There could even be a Touch ID and Touch Bar added to the keyboard.

Maybe the Surface Studio had them radically rethink their plans. Probably not though. Really odd not to see an iMac refresh/update by this time. We can only hope that something serious like a redesign, shift to new processors, or video chips, is causing the delay. However, the worst possibility is that they are simply waiting for the emoji keyboard to be available.

God I hope not. I am not an artist so the Surface Studio's design is useless to me and would in fact be a major detriment.

Well until very recently there has been nothing to refresh. The 27" model is already on Skylake and Kaby Lake desktop class CPUs are now just coming out. And the AMD GPUs at the moment are mostly renames of the R9 GPUs already in the machine. The R460 in the nMBP I believe is a downgrade and not sure mobile R480s are in full production yet. And honestly, I'd rather wait for an appropriate Vega GPU this Fall than an R480 Polaris now as the Vega should be a fair bit better.

Nah those won't be included in the box - they'll want to sell those separately. :)

I'm playing the long game myself. Next up: April keynote

I'm not a visual artist myself and see no need to pay a premium for what the Surface Studio can do, but I do think Apple has that machine on their minds, and I'm sure Jony and his team would love their turn at flexing their design power to one up Microsoft's efforts. But I echo other comments on this forum thinking the next redesign will be modest and that sounds right to me. The chances of hardware guts in the base with tilting display and a touchscreen are not in Apple's cards for the iMac, or any Mac for that matter in my opinion.

Agreed. And no one is demanding a touchscreen iMac, which would also require a total overhaul and redesign of OS X!

I would buy the hell out of a Product Red iMac with a white Apple logo. I really like the looks of the new Red iPhone, but I'm perfectly happy with the one I have.

I disagree. I would love an iMac with the capabilities of the Surface Studio.
The inherent problem with that is that Apple's betting not he "ecosystem" model. A MacBook Pro or an iMac would eat into sales of the iPad Pro, and vice versa for a more capable Pro.

The problem with that is that the iPad is tying to compete with a machine that has more features that a full OS provides and the iMac is competing with a machine that has mobile features as well. Combine this with the fact that companies (which the professional market works for) goes with the cheaper product, and it puts Apple in a difficult position.

I personally don't have any particular desire for 8K. Who needs that much space? 5K is already larger than most of the highest quality video and images out there. 8K would be ridiculous. Also there comes a point where a screen is so large that you can hardly see the entire thing sitting at a desk; I wouldn't want the screen size to go much beyond 27". 4K is only starting to become mainstream; 8K seems like jumping the gun a bit.

And I guess they'll still be using mediocre AMD mobile graphics to drive an 8K screen...

8K is probably more appropriate for the next Mac Pro. Dell sells a 32 inch 8K monitor for the low low price of $4,999.

Unfortunately, I completely agree with you. I don't think we will see a touchscreen Mac anytime soon if ever due to the reasons you mention.

I think this is a mistake both from a consumer and business point of view, but who am to tell the most valuable company in the world (for now) how to run a business :p

Apple should never do a touch screen iMac, it would be ridiculous. The Mac is way better as a point and click machine, Apple have said that they did test a touch screen Mac and even had working models but they decided against it because the experience wasn't good. So no I don't think they will do a touch screen Mac which I'm glad.

Different strokes for different folks :)

So who else is dreading the "butterfly keyboard" for the iMac? There are simply not the same motives to make a keyboard shallow when it's a separate device on a desk, but Apple seems to like having the same keyboards across devices, so I won't at all be surprised if they eliminate the current keyboard options in favor of a butterfly keyboard. I wouldn't mind if they made one and then also updated the corded keyboard with a touchbar or whatever (but with its current key design), but somehow I doubt that would happen...

You may need a longer game. I'm betting there's no April event so we will have to wait for WWDC in June. Sad hope I'm wrong.
