I honestly hope they don't do 8K because that means I'll be forced to get an 8K if I want a dGPU and a more powerful processor, and it'll be incredibly expensive and I don't even need 8K nor do I want a 32" screen.
That 8K article is from 2 years ago, and seems to be an April Fools joke. But who knows. 30" at 8K? Given today's announcement that they are building an iMac for Pros (I already use my iMac professionally, so do many of us). However, this announcement does point to a higher grade iMac Pro with 6 or 8 core processors and a huge step up in GPU power. Maybe the AMDers are right.

Remember when the 5K iMac was first announced in October 2014 it really came out of nowhere - 4K was barely a thing, and Apple shipped the first ever 5K display in volume. Two and a half years later, the iMac is still the only sensible option for anyone wanting a desktop with a 5K screen.

Point being, I would not be at all surprised if this "iMac Pro" is 8K and in the region of 32 inches.

With the new external "Pro Display" not coming until the redesigned Mac Pro - i.e. easily a year after the new iMac - it is conceivable that it too would be 8K at ~32 inches, running on Thunderbolt 4 (which may exist by then, and is speculated to support 8K resolution).

I don't think that is the way it would work. I think there would be 3 iMac models. The 8K would essentially become the iMac Pro, larger screen 8k display etc. The 5K would stay the way it is.

I would be really surprised if Apple released an 8K display. 5K almost seems like overkill, but if you get 8k, don't expect to have a good gaming machine. Rendering 8K will be pretty stressful, let alone any game on top of that. My work didn't think this over with their systems & realized their upgrade was a downgrade.

I don't see an 8K model coming - the panel retails for $5000. For a "Pro" model it would need to offer 6-core and 8-core CPUs and a serious workstation class GPU. Plus lots of ECC memory capacity and large SSDs. A mid-tier Mac Pro would be cheap in comparison, and that was before the price cuts today. :)

IMO, the "iMac Pro" will offer the 6 and 8-core Skylake-X CPUs and the X299 chipset with prices probably up to $1000 over the current i7 model (based on what Intel was asking for the Haswell-E's).

I was thinking about this iMac for "Pros" and I'm not sure but could we be getting a redesign, at first I didn't think so but now I'm wondering if they would have to redesign the iMac in order to put in higher specs for "Pros" I also wonder if this is the reason why they hadn't updates the iMac since 2015? because they never addressed that in the press meeting.

Does it mean that they will add more models to the iMac range? So they keep the current versions for consumers who don't need as much power but then add a range for the "Pro" users?

Just a thought.

I don't see anyone clamoring for an external keyboard with touchbar. How Apple would it be if you can ONLY purchase the next iMac with an external touchbar, adding a $300 premium. I don't think they'll actually do it -- much easier to get away with on the MBP. Knock on wood.

I wouldn't mind an external keyboard with Touch Bar and Touch ID, I think it would be great on the iMac. I also think Apple will do it maybe not this year but I think they will, there is already rumour about it and Apple have a patent

Wouldn't it just be an upgrade option? I know when I bought an iMac for my father it gave me the option of picking which keyboard I wanted (wired or Bluetooth) wouldn't they just add the touch bar keyboard to the list with added price?

That's a good point, it's an option I would like to see. I think it's a feature that will get better over time.

You may be right about the 8K display cost. Display costs can drop very quickly if you hit economies of scale. One of the reasons how Apple put what was a $1500 retail display into an iMac which sells starting at $1799. The 8K economy may not be ready yet, but I could see it used for the Apple Pro display they mentioned for pairing with the Mac Pro.

With regards to Skylake-X. I hope Apple doesn't go down that route. AMD Ryzen gets almost identical performance at 1/2 the cost and 2/3 the TDP. What AMD has done with that chip seams tailor made for an upgraded iMac.

Do the AMDs fully support Thunderbolt 3 with shipping motherboards ?

Been meaning to ask that. I am unsure if they do.

AMD like Intel doesn't create motherboards. I don't know if any system manufacturers have created a motherboard that holds both an AMD processor and a thunderbolt controller.

The only thing a thunderbolt controller needs is display port and 4x PCIe lanes so there is no reason why Apple could not create a system with AMD processors and TB3.

Edit: Actually ASUS has had an AMD processor with a TB port before.

I think the delay must mean a fairly substantial redesign is coming. I would like to see the base 4K model go up to say a 24 inch screen. That would mean the 5K model would also increase to 30 or 32 inches.

A priority for me would be a 'small' iMac I can spec up properly. I don't want to have to buy a huge 5K monster just to get 32GB of RAM ro a 2TB SSD.

I would love that too. 21"/4K is the perfect size for me, but it being limited to integrated graphics prevents me from getting it. Maybe that will change with these new models, who knows.

it is all over...imac pro is coming in August ! e3 cpu support for nvidia eGPU via TB3, up to 64 gb RAM, better ssd and probably vega gpu
[doublepost=1491499050][/doublepost]so i think a redesign is also confirms if they add 64 gb ram tb3 and xeon cpu
[doublepost=1491499601][/doublepost]so i think the imacs and mac mini+updates for macbook pro are coming this year, and the new apple displays and mac pro next year.

i wonder now with drivers for nvidia, every mac that has tb3, can be hooked up with any eGPU+1070/1080 in it?

I really hope a redesigned iMac will come with a "lid" of some sort for easy access to the SSD. Ideally I would like to buy the base configuration RAM/SSD and then upgrade later on (like I have with my current late 2009 model).
