I'm a bit disappointed they didn't update the design, but OTOH, at least they kept all that was good: ethernet, some standard USB ports and SD card slot (right?).

ordered maxed out except I'll get 3rd party ram.

Delivers: Jun 15 - Jun 19 by Standard Shipping

Where is the best place to get the fastest 3rd party ram it will take? ha..saw above

Base iMac Pro will have 56 CU design Vega GPU that means 3584 GCN cores. There is higher end option with 64 CU's - 4096 GCN cores.

Darn, had to spend the big bucks on apple ram until better options are available.

Radeon Pro 580...something around GTX 1060/RX480 performance?
Yes. Precisely Radeon Pro 580 is the exact same chip as is in RX 480 and 580, but with lower core clocks. Slightly. 1.2 GHz is the core clock, that gives you 5.5 TFLOPs of RX 480/580 GPU.

Dang, already ordered with only 8gb. Wonder how long it will be till there are other memory options? Can't change my order without cancelling at this point, can I? Hope you are right, CWallace. Guess I'll live with 8gb till something becomes available.

I think the sodimm 2400 will work. B&H has a bunch of it, mostly Crucial of one sort or another. I ordered the ones I mentioned above which end up giving you 64gb of ram at the same cost as Apple gives you 32. Let's hope it fits and works without a hitch. I think it will. I used this brand when it was DDR 3 and it was fine.

by the way, cancelled and reordered and it only slipped by 1 day.

AMD-Radeon-Pro-500.png

So basically, Radeon Pro 570 is 75W TDP GPU, 575 and 580 are 100-110W GPUs.

And The GPUs in iMac are 35W TDP GPUs.

And more on Vega: http://creators.radeon.com/radeon-pro-vega/

About iMac Pro thermals...
Performance takes power, and power makes heat. To deal with it, we completely redesigned the thermal architecture of iMac Pro with innovative dual-blowers, a massive heatsink, and extra venting. The result? Almost 75 percent more airflow and an 80 percent increase in system thermal capacity. Which lets iMac Pro handle 500 watts — 67 percent more power than the previous iMac — and stay chill.

The mid-range 27" model configured with an i7 CPU and 3GB fusion drive has the same price as the high-end model with the same configuration. Except the latter has a better GPU.

Yeah I cancelled and reordered without the ram. Got the balistix version of that DDR4.

Now that TB3 is here I wonder if Taget Display Mode will make a return.

The version of Thunderbolt was not the issue - it was the custom display controller Apple had to use to support 60Hz 5K.

TB3 supports 60Hz 5K over a single cable so if that allowed Apple to get rid of the custom controller, TDM might be possible again.
