i think if its just internal upgrades the new one can come this year with orders reaching their customers beginning with 5 January. But at a max date will be the March event with a redesign iMac and Mac Mini
i don't think they'll put touch on a vertical surface.. so far, they've shown us they're thinking touch interface should be where your fingers/hands already naturally fall when using the device... trackpads,iphones/pods/pads, keyboards, mice... if we see touch functionality / touch strip incorporated into apple's desktops, i'd guess they're highly likely going to be on the keyboards. And I could possibly see (but probably not) an OLD touch bar integrated below the display with the chin.

if the developers have access to it, i believe they can put their icons on the touch bar instead of a row of icons on the screen, thus clearing up space for larger work canvases on smaller screens.yep keyboard only and that will be a stretch.
Definitely don't want to be reaching up to the screen to touch a command that is already on the screen..... the usefulness of the touch bar is already dubious to me, seeing the examples on the Apple site.
No one has a clue, people hope that we'll see something in March but no one really knowsDo you have any clue when this refresh might happen? I'm thinking about buying an iMac and if it's two months I can wait, but if it's half a year then I'd buy right now.
Here's a very rough mockup of what I think most people want in the next iMac:
- 5K P3 Display with much thinner/sleeker bezels and a drastically reduced chin
- Magic Keyboard 2 with Touch Bar (as an option at least with perhaps a $99 up charge)
- Magic Trackpad 2 at no additional cost (currently a $49 up charge)
- 4 Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports (no they won't give you USB-A too...to get people on USB-C they just have to rip the band-aid)
- Perhaps leave the Ethernet port since these are desktop machines
- 1TB Fusion Drive or 256GB SSD as the standard config with reasonable SSD upgrades to 512GB and 1TB
- AMD Polaris graphics in all 27-inch configs
- Starting at no higher than $1,999
If Apple sold this machine tomorrow, iMac owners would rejoice. Thoughts on the breakdown and rough mockup?

I would buy the heck out of that!
How would anyone know?IS IT A COMPLETE REDESIGN OR JUST A HARDWARE REFRESH?
I see no rumors answering this. Considering picking up an iMac on-sale since it's mid-cycle but if there's a redesign coming I don't mind the wait.
Apple's roots are designing for creatives first. The original mac was designed with creativity in mind. Have faith.
I suspect they will surpass the Microsoft Surface Studio experience with a much better looking machine that has a the option for a 32" screen.
Screens are getting so cheap and light now. The old static desktop experience with mouse or tablet input is old tech.
Touchbar on the keyboard
Curved, larger screen with independent split zones like this
2TB SSD
That's it!
EDIT: touchbar on the keyboard
I think the Touch Bar on a Magic Keyboard just below the iMac display makes just as much sense as on a notebook. Also a good solution for people who get used to the functions of it on the MBP and then dock it to a new LG 5K display and are in need of an external keyboard.Apple have long since moved on from designing for creatives. Now Apple design for the mainstream with maximum emoji support.
Just look at the state of the Mac Pro and OS X OpenGL. No creative would touch those machines. Apple can't even be bothered to support Vulkan, and Metal is frankly dead in the water..

The touch bar is arguably a bad idea even on a laptop, where the screen is right next to the keyboard. On a desktop where you're looking directly forward it would be ridiculous to expect users to look down to their desk to see where some virtual keys are at that moment in time.
I don't believe 2tb SSDs exist yet, but if they did they'd cost almost as much as the rest of the computer combined.

As analysts go, Ming-Chi Kuo has a decent track record and he states the new iMacs will arrive in the first half of 2017. That tracks with Intel's desktop class Kaby Lake release schedule and would also allow for the AMD 470 and 480 series of GPUs (as AMD seems to be hitting volume production now).
As for the design, I expect more of the same. Guaranteed it won't be a touch screen since Schiller formally rejected such an idea when asked about the Surface Studio.
My guess: The first event of the year - typically in March - will be held at the brand new campus and they'd love to show off an iconic Mac like the iMac to kick off their new keynote hall. I'm expecting/hoping for an iMac case redesign since its been the same for over 4 years now and the inclusion of Thunderbolt 3 will require manufacturing changes anyway so why not?
I could see:
- All new iPad Pro's featuring A10X and consistent specs between sizes
- Kaby Lake spec bump to 12-inch MacBook, and perhaps the USB-C port gains Thunderbolt 3 with Kaby Lake natively supporting it
- All new 27-inch and 21.5-inch iMacs with Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, and Kaby Lake CPU/AMD GPU for 27-inch model.
- Bonus: Clarity on Mac Pro/Mac mini long term plan.
If this event happens, everyone will be more than happy to hear about software at WWDC.
