I do think it's possible they will do a redesign, if they were just going to improve the specs I think they would of done that this year.

There wasn't really anything to upgrade to other than TB3/USB-C as the Kaby Lake CPUs and the AMD RX 480M/490M will not be generally available until next year.

The cpu for the imac will be available since 5 january
[doublepost=1480629063][/doublepost]And i think they can put amd 470 in it

I also have a Late 2012 27" iMac. I would also like a 5K iMac, if Apple would put decent graphics in it. The app I use most, would not benefit from the 5K, I would have to reduce it, atleast with the current iMac.

I don't anything to graphics intensive, saying that there is an option of a 4GB graphics tho is that not enough? the only reason i haven't upgraded yet is because i think they will update them next year. But i have seen the 5K iMac in the Apple store and it looks great.

Maybe that's the reason they haven't upgraded them yet, or maybe they are looking for a way to add the touch bar and Touch ID into the iMac, it would make sense, them wanting it on all Mac's.

It seems very strange Apple only recently released a new keyboard, mouse and trackpad that charge via lightning to USB and not direct USB-C to USB. I'm assuming they will add only USB-C ports to the next iMac. I know it's just a single lightning to USB-C cable but just seems daft and inconsistent if you embrace USB-C so much to not have made these recently released peripherals full USB-C straight away since you'd always be stuck with lightning for a long time (I'm still using trackpads bought 5 years ago).

If there is indeed another keyboard or trackpad with integrated touchbar (where would they add this? To me trackpad seems easier but wouldn't be consistent with the Macbook Pro escape button thing) surely those would be with USB-C ports.

I think all these gimmicky things (including touchbars and rechargeable mice which you can't use when recharging) are really not what people want. Surely that is mostly power and expandability/compatibility at a good price.

The keyboard and mouse with magnetic battery covers from Microsoft for their Surface Studio seem much simpler than this restrictive cable and port changing malarky from Apple recently. Crazy.

I think it's an issue of security with putting Touch ID into an external keyboard or even track pad. As for being gimmicky, i think it depends on your perspective, i have a friend from when i was at university, who is an editor and he loves the new MacBook Pro's Touch Bar, when editing in Final Cut Pro, he said that it saves him time, which alone is worth the price (in his opinion) I think a TouchBar for the iMac could be great and so would Touch ID, it's just going to be whether Apple can find a way of implementing it into the iMac.

Touch ID probably would only work when connected with charge cable probably?

The touchbar to me comes across as experimental since Apple indeed haven't released it on an external keyboard.

Since my Macbook Pro is mostly in clamshell mode I cannot use it even if I upgraded to the latest Macbook Pro. I appreciate this is probably not how majority of people work but for me it is a huge saviour Clamshell, since I can connect two 27'' Dell screens via Displayport, close the macbook pro and it doesn't go fan crazy (which it will do if it tries to power the two external and internal retina displays).

It would need to be very secure and i think Apple know this, which could be the overall problem, but we will see if they do indeed announce it. I'm only speaking from what a couple of people have told me, as i still have a 2011 MacBook Pro which has been a great machine.

I haven't had any hands on time with the new MacBook Pro's, so unfortunately i cant speak from personal experience. But from what friends and professional people have told me, the TouchBar is great for editors, not so much for general use, which makes sense with it being a Pro machine.

I don't anything to graphics intensive, saying that there is an option of a 4GB graphics tho is that not enough?

Just one example, WoW does not run well in 5K with 4GB vRAM.

People might bring up that it Macs are not gaming computers, but WoW is hardly graphic intensive. When my current iMac, the Late 2012 27" 2GB vRam, was new, WoW ran great on the highest resolution, and even now it does pretty well. The new iMac has to have its resolution reduced, which sucks.

The two apple product I indeed only care about are the iMac and iPod and apple hates both.

I have a 27" imac and was wondering if the new upgrade will be significantly better than the current one?

Impossible to tell for sure as the iMac is overdue for a redesign. Spec-wise it will likely be an incremental update, with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3, Kaby Lake CPUs, and AMD Polaris GPUs.

Unlike some on this forum, I don't expect USB-A to disappear from the new iMacs.

I expect USB-A and TB2 will be replaced with USB-C/TB3 (so 6 of said ports), but they'll probably keep the SD Card reader and Ethernet port.

Just take a look at what Apple did for the 2016 rMBP and we can see what may occur.

Thinner design (just because apple loves to make things thin),
USB-C ports
Maybe losing the SD card slot
newer chipsets
I wonder if they'll try to add touchbar to the keyboard.

add touchbar to the keyboard - no
but add more usb type C ports to the keyboard will be interesting

I would bet the next iMac refresh will switch to USB-C, zero USB-A, maybe keep the SD card and ethernet port. Maybe a modest re-design by reducing the bezel.

As for GPUs, they'll just stick some crappy mobile AMD card as usual, probably a Polaris card that will be only marginally better than the M395X and probably on par with a GTX 1050 or something.

I don't think the TouchBar will make it to the iMac either. They won't even do backlighting on the existing bluetooth keyboard, I'd bet that the TouchBar would impact the keyboard battery too much.

I think this is accurate although I have a feeling the wired keyboard will get updated to be similar to the magic keyboard plus touch bar. Don't care if they do or don't do this, as the touch bar is next to useless to me, but it needs an update and would be a good time to do it. I agree it is no way happening to the magic keyboard due to battery issues.

I just hope they get this computer released soon as I need to buy it [just can't click the buy button on the current one as I want this computer to last me a while, so want the USB C etc to allow me to use the same peripherals as my mbp]. Probably waiting to at least March / April judging by previous releases of The macbook.

They will be updating the imac, macbook and iPads early next year [mac pro and mini would be nice too but I doubt it]. Let's hope they can do this in one event although I am not holding my breath.

Do you guys think they'll stick to dedicated GPUs for the 27in 5k iMac or will they maybe offer a model with an integrated GPU?

The 5K display requires a dedicated GPU to power it. The latest macOS (Sierra) has support for of AMD's next-generation desktop (iMac) and workstation (Mac Pro) class GPUs.

yes but mac has macOS and not windows...so they need macos applications to ARM

As TechTastic.nl states, developers no longer submit fully compiled binaries.

Instead, intermediary bit code is submitted which Apple uses to compile the binary code for the specific CPU architecture. Should Apple release an ARM-based Mac, developers wouldn’t need to re-submit their existing code nor would they need to add any ARM-specific code in order for their apps to run natively on ARM-based hardware.

I bet they will keep the ethernet port. Other than that, I have no idea.
