Nothing made by apple now uses anything near "the latest specs". The company is two years behind, yet so many think that releasing a new colour phone is some sort of leap forward. I use apple and like the quality, but anybody who thinks it is cutting edge technology needs to have a hard look at themselves and wake up.

Apple never has the best specs on paper, but what is actually two years ahead in terms of benchmarks and performance tests? I'm not trying to prove a point, I'm seriously asking. Because every time a new iPhone comes out and I see side-by-side performance tests or benchmarks it's never two years behind the competition, except maybe in display quality.

Apple is very ahead in terms of custom architecture design for their chips, you want to know why they are so ahead in performance it's because they design the chips to work hand in hand with iOS. They do have arguably one of the best engineering teams for processors in the industry. That on top of Apple's cash flow, can afford to design these chips because it sells there iPhone and iPads. Ever since the A5 dual core processor Apple devices have had the power to easily outlast the competition. A iPad today can easily give you 5 years, look at the iPad 2. Now all you with Air 2's and Pro's imagine that same 5 years with even less slowdown over time, from the extra overhead of the newer chips 64bit architecture, increased IPC and 2Gbs+ ram, don't forget some of the most powerful mobile GPU's in the market. Apple is truly unique in their ability to consistently outdue themselves with the performance and optimization of iOS and their processors.

Apple being greedy yet again. They could've easily kept the 2 1/2year old design of the Air 2 and just put the A9 processor in it and charged the same $329 price.
But screen repair costs are way, way down on the original Air design. No laminated display et al.

If delivery times are slipping so fast, it looks like Tim was trying to rush out the new ipad to beat Samsung's release date of today for their new tab s3 tablet with s-pen.
Well, I think it's a smart move from Apple. This puts the nail in the coffin for Android tablets. For everyone deciding between Androidland and iPad, there's no reason not to go iPad now: Price, build quality, better performance - it all comes together now.

If I weren't holding out for iPad Pro 2 this year, this new iPad could have been my upgrade, coming from an original Air. So there's nothing wrong with "trying to rush" in order to get all the moneyz, right?

I'm thinking of trading in my Mini 4 and Picking up a 32gb model as Comic book reader using my own library and comixology. I'd like to hear how it fares, is the screen significantly worse, obviously the pro with its wider color gamut would look better but seems a waste to spend 200 more for just this purpose I have a Ipad Mini 4 but the smaller screen isn't ideal for comics, guess i'll have to wait for the screen comparing vids.

Cheaper design and cheaper display repairs equal = Greedy Apple?

How is it not? Brick and mortars dropped the price of the Air 2 to $299 all the time. Apple instead decides to kill the better tablet and give you an inferior design.

1) Apple is not a charity, their objective is to make money, as much as possible. That's what most organizations do in a capitalist society. I don't know of any charity organization that products tablets.

2) Very obviously, Apple is launching this tablet to go after the lower end budget conscious crowd.

Clearly they were making money if a retailer could sell their Air 2 for $200 less than the original launch MSRP.

The lower end budget tablet WAS the Air 2. I guess it's not budget enough for you because it doesn't have a plastic screen with a thicker body?

Totally irrelevant. Their objective is not to make "some" money, their objective is to make as much money as they can.

Doesn't bother me one bit since I never pay msrp for Apple products. But to consumers who don't know much about specs, it's a slap in the face to sell them a discontinued repurposed item when the current tablet was better and could've easily been sold at the same price.

Only a slap in the face to those who don't understand tablets or economics.

I'm sure Apple would love you to buy one, but I'm equally sure that you're not the target market.
As you say, the Air 2 is a great device already.

Thx.

Not surprising, you get the A9 SoC, there's no A9X, so the GPU though higher clocked has to push much more pixels than the iPhone 6/6S. Looking at Geekbench it's not that bad.

I'll wait for the new smaller Pro, which hopefully arrives in the next 1-2 months.

I like a cheaper iPad, but the lower quality screen (gammut and AR coating) and overall speed are an issue for me.
