How is it not? Brick and mortars dropped the price of the Air 2 to $299 all the time. Apple instead decides to kill the better tablet and give you an inferior design.
It's the retailer's choice if they're willing to accept lower or even no profit and use the iPads as loss leaders. Even now, there are minor discounts being offered for the 2017 iPad. I wouldn't be surprised if we see it on sale for $279 down the line.

Besides, until the minor refresh late last year, capacities were lower at 16GB and 64GB. I'd take the $329 2017 iPad 32GB over $299 Air 2 16GB anytime. The display on the Air 2 is a nice bonus but having just 16GB storage? That's quite restricting even 3-4 years ago.

You're absolutely right, it is their choice. Which works out for someone like me who's isn't foolish enough to overpay for an Apple product.

The Air 2 32gb has been on sale before for $299 at many retailers. I thought the 16gb had been long gone for some time now?

Nothing made by apple now uses anything near "the latest specs". The company is two years behind, yet so many think that releasing a new colour phone is some sort of leap forward. I use apple and like the quality, but anybody who thinks it is cutting edge technology needs to have a hard look at themselves and wake up.

What do you consider latest specs? Are you comparing it to Android devices? Because if you are, you don't understand the advantages of iOS over Android.

Air 2 32GB was only released September 2016 which coincided very nicely with holiday sales. I forgot to buy one during the holidays (I was on a comic buying frenzy). When I looked again in January 2017, Air 2 stock was pretty sparse and they were just going for regular price until last week when the new models were posted.

The 16GB Air 2 has frequently been on sale for $299-349 but imho, that's just too little storage. Fine for Facebook, ebooks, streaming and web surfing but heaven forbid you even install a handful of apps. I think Facebook and FB Messenger alone use something like 1GB combined. Then you have "Others" taking up 20-30% of the meager capacity.

With the new iPad, that's $329 regular price and no need to wait for sales. Mayhaps $249-299 once the deep discounts start for the more patient.

Geekbench 4 Wifi Only 2017 iPad
ARM @1.84 GHz
1.92 GB Ram
CPU TEST:

2497 Single Core
4149 Multi-Core

These results are almost identical to the results for the iPhone 6S, which has the same A9 CPU as this 2017 iPad.

Edit: I had lower scores when I was still restoring from backup.

And just for comparison sake, what were the air2 scores?

Good stuff. iPads always get clocked a bit higher when they have the same chip Ax chip as in an iPhone, because the iPad can support higher thermal limits, and has a bigger battery.

So, the iPad (5th gen) should always perform slightly better than a 6s/6s Plus.

Thanks...wuz too lazy to look up.

So a small increase...this edition will sell to its target audience.

Those wanting more will have to wait...

>30% increase in single core. vs Air 2. Not sure I'd consider that "small".

I still wouldn't replace my Air 2 (if I had one) with this though, unless it was a KILLER deal. But as a replacement for pre-Air2 iPads, this is a great device.

The iPad (5th gen) has the same CPU improvement % over the Air 2, as the iPhone 7 Plus had over the 6s Plus. And I thought that was a very noticeable bump, on the phones.

I will just wait until the iPad Pro goes on sale and get that one. These specs are a little underwhelming. Gotta pay to play.

Its actually not bad. Compared to the iPad pro its arround 86% of the performance for 56% of the price (in Canada but should be close in other country as well).
It comes down more to the other features to take a decision. To me, personally, this iPad is absolutely worth it. Cant wait to try it.
