Followup: after being turned off for 12 hours, it indicates it still has 100%. So far, so good...

Even though it should be "Off", I would verify what apps are allowed to run in the background and disable anything you feel can wait, until you launch the app. Just a thought.

Ed,

Will check background runnings...

Someone else suggested logging out of the cloud also.

Not sure there's a problem at this moment - I'll continue to keep an eye out.

BTW it has now been off for three days and just checked; the iPad Pro is still at 100%. I think the reset was effective.

I called Apple. They say, no matter what, if I plug my iPad into my Mac, it should show up under 'Locations' within Finder. From there, they say I should be able to do a recover on it.

It turns out, I only have USB-C charging cables. So I have ordered a USB-C to USB-A data cable, from Apple, so there is no doubt that it should work. It should be here tomorrow.

I received the cable from Apple. It made no difference. I am not sure what I am going to do now.

Off is off with iPhone and iPad. Sleep mode is another matter but nothing runs in off mode.

I am having a problem charging two iPad Pros of different sizes. Tried both swapping Apple usb c cables and the power adaptors but they both won’t charge, if I wait for a few hours then try again sometimes it works again.

It seems to be getting worse for both of them and the cables are in a brand new state with no bends or kinks as they are left on the kitchen worktop in the corner.

Is there a problem with the design of the usb c port on the iPad Pro as it’s intermittent and getting worse over time?

It looks like this is not a user fixable issue. Everything is pointing to some sort of hardware problem. I ended up calling Verizon, the place I purchased from. They said no problem. It's under warranty and they shipped a replacement over night. Should have started there.

On a side note, I have never had to restore from an cloud backup. When it was done, every app, app group, setting, wallpaper, etc. was back exactly the way I had it. It was awesome.

This charging issue happened twice to me now, exactly like @EdsLife described. I tried a multitude of charger/cable combinations, but nothing worked. Reset or reboot key combinations had no effect.

The only thing that worked was to leave it alone for a few days without a charger so that it really had to shut down and later restart when it got power back.

Hey Everyone!! Hope you all are doing okay as we continue to be locked down :(

Quick question, I have the 2018 iPad Pro and yesterday it stopped charging. I have tried a few different cords and plugs, and it see's the charger at first, and gets it to 1% then stops charging. Anyone ever see this? I have rebooted it and nothing helps. With all the Apple Stores being closed I cant just take it in and see.
Yes. I have had a charging issue with my 11” and 12.9”. If you plug it in, it will show the low battery symbol. It will pop it up every 5 seconds. Apple would not fix one of them because it was a couple of months out side of the warranty. They fixed the other. It’s a firmware issue and they are the only one that can fix it.

My 2018 iPad Pro 12.9 wouldn't hold a charge. If I let it sit overnight it almost fully discharged. It was still under warranty, so Apple replaced it and no more problem. Sorry for not having more info about what caused the problem, but the replacement (recertified I think) works fine. If yours happens to be under warranty, go for it!

The whole transaction was done by email - the nearest Apple store is over 40 miles away.

That didn't fix it, I tried that the day you suggested it. So last night I did a full erase and reset, so I will try again tonight and see if that fixes it.
Is it the same charging brick you are using with all the different cables? Maybe it’s the power brick that’s faulty?

My ipad 11 pro 2018 has the same charging issue this forum is discussing. It started with not charging even the cable is connected. the ipad run out of battery then it starts to charge immediately. a few days later, even after running out the battery, it still does not charge immediately but it will charge to 100% if I leaves it overnight. A few more days later, it does not charge at all. Then one day I dug out an older charger (one side is USB-A, the other side is USB-C). it can charge again. next day it does not charge any more.

Sorry for describe them so details - my point is, the ipad seems have some kind of "memory". After a few chats with apple representative, they asked me to mail it in. The same day repair center received the unit, they complete the repair with issuing a replacement. -- To me, this indicates the issue is common to them.

I am searching this topic and found this thread starting from March 2020. I am wondering if this design defect of this model...

Any idea why the same cord works when plugged into the Macbook but the iPad wont charge when plugged into a outlet nor a USB outlet?
I have very similar issue. Original cable and charger stopped charging the device. I tested the charger ia working for other devices. Then I tried my Macbook pro charger, but still no chance. I used same original cable to my desktop pc and that started charging. But after 93% it start difficulties. But weirdly enough it is soo picky. I saw the latest comment and I think ipad pro 2018 models are auffering issues with usbc charging port.

My 2018 iPad Pro only charges with USB A to USB C. I noticed that my included charger paired with a 3rd party cable started becoming finicky over the past several weeks. It finally seems to have stopped working entirely.

I switched out the 3rd party cable (extra long and braided) for the original, almost brand new Apple cable and still no dice. I also tried using my MacBook Pro AC adapter and no dice. Hard resetting had no effect.

I’m running iOS 14.4.

The iPad only charges if I use a USB A to USB C cable. I can plug it into any USB A adapter and it seems to work. I guess I should be happy it charges at all! Of course it’s out of warranty.

I’ve done some Googling and it seems like this may not be that uncommon of an issue. Has anyone gotten a resolution from Apple?

I assume your iPad was out of warranty too?

My iPad Pro 2018 was doing the same thing. Stopped charging with USB-C to USB-C. Would charge USB-A to USB-C.
Local Apple technician wanted $600+ to replace charging module…not worth it to me.

I took iPad out of Apple magnetic folio case, and it now charging with USB-C to USB-C!

I truly believe the magnetic case was causing the problem as the iPad aged.

Have the same issues with my 12.9 2018. I need to keep it connected to the charger all the time. If I disconnect the charger, only a reboot will make it charge again.

In my previously job I managed and supported over 5,100 iPads across 45 locations (schools and offices).
I can attest to the fact that I have seen and fixed iPads that for some reason stopped charging.

My experience the majority of iPads not charging would fall into the following three scenarios:
  1. The issue would be resolved by doing a forced restart (hard reboot).
  2. If that did not resolve, the issue for others would be by restoring the iPad.
  3. Lastly, a true issue that a forced restart or restore would not resolve.
One other point, in that role I had direct access to Enterprise System Engineers and the following two things can be stated.
Note: I don't think this applies within this thread but sharing from knowledge point of view.
  • iPads do not like being turned off and not having been charged at least once in a six month period. It will not in all cases but not being charged within a 6 month period can lead to the battery becoming not functional.
  • iPads if left to become completely flat have been known to take some time before a base charge is applied allowing the iPad to be turned on. This especially applies for models as they age.

Most electronics with Li batteries are like that. It's not really something limited to the iPad. I've had similar issues with Kindles and Motorola Android smartphones.

My 3rd gen 12.9" iPad Pro is experiencing the same issue. I've had it for just under 3 years and never had any issues until last night. Completely unprovoked, the iPad is now restarting on its own, will not remain off, will not charge via either the USB-C port on the iPad nor the USB-C charging passthrough on the Magic Keyboard, and will not be recognized by either of two MacBook Pros I tried connecting it to.

I am at a loss here. Apple wants $650 to replace the iPad but I refuse to throw close to the cost of a new iPad to replace my current one when it seems to be a blatant software glitch in the OS. I was moving large video files from an SD card to iCloud Drive on my iPad when the issue began, so part of me thinks something glitched in the file transfer protocol that's sent my iPad into a boot-loop.

I feel like if I could get a total factory restore of iPad OS on the iPad that this issue would immediately go away, but I can't even achieve that since no computer I've tried will recognize the iPad. I have never seen behavior like this on an iPad before.

No, the iPad 12.9 3rd edition stops charging, charges intermitently, needs a reboot to start charging again, etc. It’s not related to the battery and it seems to be specific to this model.

I realize that there's a genuine issue with the 3rd gen. However, I was referring to this specific post with my comment. The following is not unusual behavior for electronics with Li batteries.

I have had this issue with my 2018 11” iPP for more than a year now, it even killed 2 official Apple USB-C cables for me (that came with my MBA and one purchased separately), and on top, a month ago it also killed my LG USB-C cable/port (so I cannot use the USB-C port anymore with my MBA…).

The only way I can charge the iPP is by using my Anker power bank, which is very odd to me… My iPP is well out of warranty though, so i might need to check with my household insurance to see if this is covered.

Perform a hard reset of the device.

Step 1: Press and Release the Volume Up button. (Do take note that the operation is not press and hold, but press and release.)
Step 2: After performing step 1, immediately Press and Release the Volume Down button.
Step 3: Now Press and Hold the Power Button at the top. You will see the Slide to Power off button. Even so, keep on holding the Power Button until you see the Apple logo, then let it go.
This worked for my situation, which was v strange. I recently got a MacBook Pro and while using Sidecar my iPad Pro 2018 would not charge from the Mac via TB4 (which it should according to Apple), yet it charged fine using a power adaptor. I called Apple and they said go to a store, so I went to the store (4.5 hour round trip) and true to form they just wiped and DFU'd my iPad and it didn't fix the issue so they offered me a replacement device out of warranty for "only" $659. I told them it was disgraceful service as it's clearly not my doing. Luckily I found this thread when I got home and the hard reboot seems to have fixed it!! Well done and thank you so much!!! I was about to claim on a device insurance I have and be without the device for 4 weeks! Not to mention risk losing the brand new screen protector I just installed.
