OK. That was news to me. I may need consider that but do they issue you a brand new device if your 3 weeks old is found defective? I have underdtood that policy is to give refurbished replacement.

Ok, you might be right above re 18 being a bit snappier than 17 but not by much, i kept both my wife has the 17 and i the 18, the 18 has a bit warmer screen but its adjustable in settings, I am not getting any of your screen problems on mine that i can see.

ps i got my 18 32gb 4G brand new for 1/2 price so not going to go looney over screen checking, have been down the light bleed problem with previous iPads.
If its not noticeable in normal use all good.

I think that’s right. If Apple determines the iPad is defective (within one year period), they can exchange it and it might be a refurbished one (no matter where you bought it). Whether new or refurbished was never clear to me, but I understand it could be either.
Yeah, that's about what I understood also, there is no way to tell for sure beforehand what you will get as replacement. I guess it depends on what they have in their service stock. Maybe if refurbished are out of stock, I think they will give you a new one.

But if still within the return period from your store, that would guarantee brand new, obviously. But what I’m really saying is Apple could tell you if it’s defective or not, and if within spec. Then decide what to do.
I know. Both ways have its benefits and problems. I could get their opinion if the display is considered faulty but I think when complaining about display they will change it just because you are unhappy with it. But problem gets even worse if you end up getting worse unit as replacement, I could wind endless return cycle. From my past experience with different kind of displays has been that they rarely get better by replacing with new, you just get other problems in different places of the screen and possibly some completely new issues. Like I mentioned, I'm already on my second iPad 2018 with screen problems (it lacks book spine issue first one had but this one still has uniformity problems, just different places than the first one).
Also even dealers and repair techs at the beginning admit there is a problem with your screen but replacements are the same or have different issues they eventually change their opinion and say that must be within manufacturers specifications. From that I can say that to me most manufacturers seems to think that if display powers up and shows any picture, it is well within specifications. All this is from my past experience with many different brand gear, so I was not talking about Apple, because up until now I have been getting good screens with my previous Apple devices.

Surely I could return it to the store but I have already returned two (2017 and 2018) iPad and while this dealer has good return policy, I'm not sure I want to take my chances to end up black listed customer and not being able to buy something else from them later on. I would have to just return it without claiming it faulty, because if being honest about it, they would direct me to deal with service and by just returning it and then going to buy another just raises the red flag, especially since I've done it twice already. I also got mine for very cheap price and I even had mine price matched after purchase, so after all it just does not feel fair to me, even it would be possible.

Right, you actually have to use it with your everyday tasks and you start to notice difference in speed. It is not just about how quickly apps open, and I don't think that is even relevant measurement of the speed difference between different generation products.
Maybe warmer screen temperature in 18 vs 17 model causes partly what I'm experiencing with my unit. I know that eyes are less sensitive to blue colour and that's why cooler display may appear more uniform than warm display where your eye may see even slightest variations.

Similar case here, I got mine basically for what they sell discounted old 2017 models, so can't complain about that.
Depending on use, display issues are not visible most of the time, but with even white or gray backgrounds they tend to show up if look for them (which is something that you tend to see once you have noticed it).

I still have few days to decide what to do, I may try to get used to it, especially after reading this old thread once again https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/uneven-tint-uniformity-on-1500-2016-mbp.2020764/
It is not about iPad but still relevant in my opinion. In that thread I could see that peoples opinions about display quality vary a lot, like some peoples post a pic of their screen saying it looks fine to them while to it looked horribly bad to me but there were also some that had exactly same opinions as I, and those who went through replacement without finding any better, so maybe somewhat similar case here with this iPad, different peoples different standards. Sorry for the long post.

I noticed interesting thing last night with display, it looks more uniform when in night shift mode. I guess red push of the mode hides the issue some by making whole screen red tinted so one corner is just tiny bit more red then. In normal daylight when only one corner is reddish and other bluish makes it more obvious to notice. I might consider this a keeper as I mostly use it late evening or night and I have always liked the way screens look in night mode (I prefer warm temp displays myself, as long as they look uniform to me).

I’m a couple months in now (okay maybe 6 weeks) of having given up my 12.9 iPP and getting a 2018 iPad just to tide me over until new iPads released. I was already toying with going to the 10.5 because I just got to where I never took my iPad anywhere due to the size/bulk. I decided to get the 2018 pad to use until new ones were released either in the summer or fall.

Honestly - not sure I’ll go back pro for a while. I have a good setup with a stand and cheap keyboard that I’m really happy with (and my biggest issue giving up my pro was the ASK), and when I want to take the pad with me, I can grab it and throw it in my purse.

Since I no longer have a computer, I may wind up wanting to go back pro at some point, but for now, this 2018 pad is really making me happy!

Received mine today. I was very worried I made a mistake by not choosing the Pro, but everything seems fine so far. I’m still a bit sceptical about longevity due to the 2GB of RAM.

Did you all get perfectly uniform displays (if you really view them critically with test patterns)?

I don’t know why you are on this quest to prove that all ipad 2018 screens have aberrations. As i’ve mentioned in the other thread that you started, my screen is fine.

I'm loving it.
Been wanting an IPP and pencil for awhile but just couldn't justify the price.

Same here...I have really wanted a IPP w/Pencil. The Air 1 was not keeping a charge like before and getting slower with the most recent iOS updates.

That question was not to you, or anyone else who have already commented having 100% perfect unit but to those newcomers in this thread. ;)

I'm just interested in what others think about display in 2018 models. I tried another unit and still did not get 100% perfect display but I got instead 100% good battery and otherwise cosmetically perfect unit, so I did not get more replacements to make sure not to get another battery problem.

Is there an app for iPad to check which brand display is in the unit?

My display is great, and I’m pretty sensitive to screen uniformity issues.

Would I be able to fault it if I...as you say...view it critically with test patterns?............possibly, but if an issue only shows up under such scrutiny, then it really is a non-issue.

If you have a glaring issue with the screen, then return it. However, if the screen is perfectly fine in general use, then move on and try to enjoy your device. :)

No, I cannot say I have a glaring issue with the screen. Probably many peoples would never notice it unless I show to them how to see it. It is just fine in everyday use when not moving eyes between locations where is may be seen in certain conditions. I decided I'm not playing display lottery another round to make sure I don't get some new or old issues (what I mentioned before) with another unit. I checked store demo units and while it is nearly impossible to judge screen in those conditions (bright lights) I could see some of the issues with some units. Also based on the demo unit serials they were from the same factory as mine, so maybe they all got the same brand LCD panel in them. Those who have reported their screens being 100% perfect under scrutiny here have serial beginning with D or F?

I know many peoples don't check their screens with specific test patterns when they have purchased a new device but in my opinion there is good reason why everyone should do that anyway. Often you see peoples report noticing display issues when they have had device for quite some time. It can be due to some new program they use which has the kind of colours or solid backgrounds that makes issues more noticeable. So issue has most likely been there from the beginning but they did not notice it until they happened to use some application where it is more noticeable.

I enjoy the 2018 iPad. I’ve only had two iPads before this (iPad mini 2 & 4) and while I miss having a smaller iPad sometimes (avid reader on the go), I like how I’ve been able to use the 2018 as my main computer with a bigger screen and added benefit of the pencil. Yeah, some pro features would be nice (speakers peak my interest), but giving an essential feature to a budget iPad has bridged a gap.

While some people have trouble with their iPads which seems to have been the main topic of this thread so far, we need to talk about the positive experiences more so we can brag as much as a pro user.

Well I had the 1st and 2nd generation 12.9” pros, and I just went to the 2018 iPad (mainly because I didn’t want to get the 10.5 with new iPads on the horizon, and I really wanted to downsize for portability). The thing I was worried about missing the most was the ASK, and, right now, I have a setup I’m really liking (a cheap Bluetooth keyboard that resembles a Mac keyboard and a $20 stand). It makes it easy to use my pad at the table/desk then grab it up and go when I want to take it somewhere (and this ipad can be thrown in my purse).

Side by side I’m sure I’d notice differences, but honestly, with daily use, I’m just as happy with this one as I was with my pro. Yeah I miss the extra screen a bit when I’m at my desk, but the portability makes up for it.

USB 3.0 support would have been nice.

Specs are on Apple's site.

No laminated display, or true tone (if you care about that). Externally it appears to be the same as the 2017 model. Seems like they just gave it an A10 chip and Pencil support.

I'm also a bit disappointed that it's 1st gen TouchID. Never would have thought that would matter to me, but my 8 Plus has spoiled me! I guess such compromises have to be made to keep the price down.
