I wonder how long (if ever) it takes them to go with the moniker Phone. I know iPhone is iconic but it seems that Apple is moving in this direction.

iPad was thought to be ridicule but in the end it still worked.

Same with Nintendo Wii
Hardly the same. Both of those were completely new ideas that revolutionised their sectors and attracted new audiences. Their names needed to be bold.

I’m talking about giving an iPhone the same name as an existing branded product. The tablet form of an energy drink. Heavily associated with irresponsible pursuit of pleasure at the expense of sleep. At a time when retail stores are coming under pressure to ban the sales of high caffeine products to minors and there are growing concerns in the medical field about the health impacts.

I’d like to think Apple wouldn’t be so stupid.

That Doesn’t seem logical and it takes away from what the iPhone has always been since it was introduced in 2007 from Jobs, which is the ‘iPhone’. It will always be the iPhone, but will likely have some attachment after it to show how it differs from the other models.

I'm thinking iPhone 9, iPhone XS, and iPhone X Plus. I'm hoping next year they'll explore a new naming scheme, though. It'll be interesting to see if they switch away from numbers.

I have to agree with your assessment, assuming they don’t use the numbering scheme for all the new models this year.

IMO, 2019 is when the switch to Sept 2019 iPhone 5.8", Sept 2019 iPhone 6.5" and such begins. One can speculate that the rumored internal debate over naming was along this line of thought....... :apple:

The naming scheme is both a mess, and has huge brand recognition all at the same time.
Two iPhone related naming schemes have been like clock work for years; iOS and the A chip. Sync the iPhone model name with those 3 facets of the device; design, operating system and chip, all one. It’s the best thing about iPhone, that they’re all made for each other anyways.

This years 3 models will be called iPhone 12. Choose your size at purchase.
Or if they have to differentiate;
iPhone 12(6.1)
iPhone 12X(5.8)
iPhone 12XL(6.5)
12 also keeps the appropriate distance from Samsung galaxy phones, numerically.
