so we have had some leaks and rumors about an iPad Pro refresh, but the question is how many of you are sure of the time Apple will have an event to announce them?

I kind feel like Spring 2019 will be when we get a refresh, (I hope I’m dead wrong) but it seems like the time of year Apple may start announcing all the new ipads... I’m just doubting seeing the iPad I’ve wanted for 8 years being revealed in September or October. Mostly because the universe hates me. ;)

What about everyone else, when do you think the refresh will happen, and what reasoning would you use to back up your thoughts?

There’s been too much chatter for them to still be 6-7 months away. And it would bring them nearly 2 years without an update if they waited until next spring.

I think the bigger unknown is if they are announced in September or if there is an October event.

iPhones, watch, MacBook and iPad Pro. My guess is that Apple would prefer not to have multiple events.

I think the ipads are ready but Apple wait for the ios12 officially release . The ipad pro are coming with ios 12
So my guess is October release for the public

I only got my 10.5 Pro barely a year ago & I couldn't possibly think about upgrading so soon unless the new alleged 11" model offered something revolutionary.

I can't see anything revolutionary. They always promise a huge speed bump and a few new gimmicks. We shall see, my problem is I have a family member who is claiming mine before I even get the new one!

There's a lot of chatter right now for it to not be Spring 2019 (But who knows - the factories may not have hammered down how to really nail those two screens with 120 HZ; I imagine they're custom made like the X's). I would guess more towards September 2019, as it'd just look strange to release an iOS device during the October event (When the MacBooks are usually announced), but who knows? Maybe there'll be some news of some more macOS integration into the iPads to justify that October release.

At least you have a good excuse/reason to get one. I couldn't justify a new iPad so soon. I think I will save my pennies for the new 2018 iPhone X & hopefully updated Apple Watch.

The poll question can be interpreted two different ways.

I can see a "refresh" (processor bump) of existing Pro models in Oct/Nov. But any revolutionary changes (such as smaller bezels, FaceID, etc.) introduced in a Pro 3, I can't see happening before March 2019.

If such Pro 3 models are released in Oct/Nov then it means it will be 2 significant design changes in less than 3 years.

9.7 Pro -> 10.5 Pro = 15 months
10.5 Pro -> 11 Pro (Oct/Nov) = 16 months

That's going to mean spending more out of pocket for those who "must have" the latest. Between the significant reduction in resale value of iPads, the increasing number of Pro iPads available for sale in the used market, and the great value of the 2018 iPad, it is going to be difficult (not impossible) to get "decent" (open to interpretation) price on the older model in order to buy the new one.

It would be interesting in that the 9.7" was the primary iPad size for many years, and then after being increased to 10.5", it'll grow again the next generation.

I wonder if 10.5" will eventually stick around in a future iPad (non Pro).

There have been too many rumours and leaks for it to be 2019, also Apple have registered new iPad devices in Europe which they have to do for some countries before release.

Mark Gurman has said new iPad Pro’s this year and so has Ming Chi Kuo.

iPad Pro 11” and a 12.9” with Face ID and a redesign with less bezel. Last years iPad Pro wasn’t a redesign it was more of tweak and general update so that means the iPad Pro has had the same design since 2015.

Everything suggests 2018.

iOS 12 beta makes several references to thin-bezel iPad Pro and Face ID for iPad. Apple wouldn't do this if they were planning a 2019 launch.

iPhone 6.1" has Face ID. Apple isn't going to wait 6-9 months before adding Face ID to iPad Pro.

If you want more confirmation, Gurman just reconfirmed iPad Pro for this year.

In term of sales, iPads received a black eye in the form of decreased YoY revenue. Apple certainly isn't waiting until 2019 to reignite the iPad portfolio.

The rumored 10.5 involves a chassis ANd a screen size change. The 12.9 (rumored) Lops off the beZels and keeps the screen and by our table, it’s kept the same body for 3 years now.

What if (only speculating here) they change the 12.9 in September and then keep the 10.5 for March simply giving the current model a spec bump?

Covers them both ways with back to school and then upgrades in March.

I read somewhere that the 12.9 is less popular than the 10.5. Taking the latter to 11 blurs the difference even more for some people. Might make sense to push the larger model in a new shiny form factor, rack up sales and then introduce the redesigned 10.5 in March right at the 22 month timeframe.

My gut says we see both this year but I’m not making a bet against you given how I crashed and burned with WWDC.

Fun to think of options though. We should know soon enough. If it’s coming out in 3 weeks we SHOULD be seeing more leaks.

.

but pretty much all of that chatter has been bezels and face id. i mean that's hardly a reason to refresh as an event. maybe a 5 minute bit in the iPhone keynote. heck something that tiny could just be launched with a press release.

now if they added OLED, wireless charging, better speakers, more storage and some "pro" focused added software features along with a new pencil and a smart keyboard that doesn't take a dump in 3 months that might warrant an event which would probably be early/mid october with a release in late october/november

Tiny? It’s arguably the biggest change in the iPad since launch. “Just beZels and faceid” allows them to offer a significantly large mostly advertising to edge screen in a much smaller chassis.

OLeD isn’t happening this year. Speakers? They’re pretty good already. Wireless charging ? Meh. Could be nice but takes too long. Unless it’s TRUE wireless at a distance without a pad.

Smart Keyboard and pencil I’ll give you that and indications are that it will at least be redesigned.

Don’t underestimate the lack of beZels and faceid. By that token the iPhone X was “just” taking off beZels and addin lg faceid too.

It Doesn’t take everything you said in your post to warrant a September/October iPad keynote. Face ID alone and the reduction/elimination of the bezels is a massive improvement. OLED isn’t a reality right now for the iPad. And you mentioned if they add ‘better speakers’, Apple already _did_ add better speakers with the stereo speakers which greatly improved the sound with iPad Pro models.

I think it will also depend on what else Apple has to offer, they could do:

Apple Watch Series 4
iPhone - 3 new iPhone's
iPad Pro - redesign with Face ID, no home button and reduced bezels
13" MacBook/Macbook Air update

OR if they have more Mac's to update and other products they could split the two and do

September - Apple Watch Series 4, iPhone and iPad Pro's
October - new 13" MacBook/MacBook Air, Mac mini, iMac

Apple are not against doing BIG keynotes, last years WWDC was an example where most products got updated and the keynote went over the two hours, also the iPad Pro 2015 introduction event saw a few products updated.

On the flip side they do also hold October Mac events every now and then, the last one being in 2016 with the new MacBook Pro's.

With the additional leaks re upcoming Mac updates - I think there’s a better chance now two events, just like you mention.

It's very possible, however it's unpredictable because Apple can do BIG keynotes where nearly every product gets updated or they can split them into two separate events. October could be a Mac event especially with the Air being 10 years old this year and the iMac being 20 years old also this year!

One of the side benefits of me being so wrong on predicting what Apple is going to do is that there's no pressure to "maintain that reputation of good predictions"... I can only go up from here.

nailed WWDC when a lot of us were fantasizing. Keep it positive! No jinks.

At the end of the day it really doesn’t matter. It’s a piece of tech. Whatever we are using now will still work sep 14th. 1st world problems but ... it’s my hobby ... only area I splurge on besides travel .. and it’s fun shooting the **** with you guys instead of fighting about politics on twitter.

Mac mini (unless it a new Apple TV sized form factor), MBP and iMac could also be silent updates. I don’t see a huge iMac change this year. It’ll take sales away from the iMac pro and until the modular pro is ready they need to milk that puppy.

3 iPhones , watch ... nothing really groundbreaking here. AirPower has been described before. iPad pros will be the star. Leaving room for one more thing ... a low cost student focused laptop computer.

All in one event. Good timing for back to school. Phones watches iPads and laptops. Something for everyone. More than one thing for everyone probably.

This! It’s not like in the grand scheme of things it really matters, after all we are talking a month between events September or October. Either way I’m looking forward to the new Apple Watch, iPad Pro redesign and the new 13” MacBook Air/MacBook.

Yep this could be the case, I’m hoping they do one BIG event and announce everything that’s due this year, as you said a lot of it can be silent updates and wouldn’t take long on a keynote slide (similar to how they updated most of the Mac lineup at last years WWDC in just a few minutes).

iPhone’s (3 versions) given around 30-45 minutes?
Apple Watch Series 4 - 15 minutes
iPad Pro’s given 30 minutes to talk about and introduce new design with a video
New MacBook Air/MacBook updates alongside new Mac mini and maybe iMac spec updates on a slide - 30 minutes

That gets it to around 2 hours, maybe announcement of AirPower release date and new accessories such as Apple Pencil and AirPods so say around 2 hours and 15 minutes. I think that could be done. Also depends if Apple want to do another event in the year, it seems like they prefer to stay clear of doing October events, the last one was 2016.

Totally doable. Unless they want to keep the buzz going. Or maximize sales in some area.

I think you’re giving too much time to the iPhones actually. Last year was truly groundbreaking. What’s really new this year? The X stays the same with perhaps a better camera, colors and the new wireless charging. X+ is a big X. The 6.1 LCD is a stripped down X. They have to go through the motions but there really isn’t a wow or surprise factor here that we haven’t seen with the X. It’s a tick tick (S) year for the phones.

And same with the watch actually. The real features are in Watch OS5 and that’s been out since WWDC. What’s the change? Or beZels reduced to give us 15% more screen. Maaayyybe some new health sensors and a band. Other than that functionally it remains the same.

This is an iPad and Mac event. For a change (the latter). The former is going through arguably the biggest redesign since launch. It’s now slowly coming into its own as a laptop replacement (for SOME subsect of users let’s not fight). I think they’d want the focus on it to be at the big September event. Same with the new laptop. They’ve been taking a LOT of flak on the lineup. In their best interest to fix the problem sooner rather than later. Back to school is a bonus to jumpstart sales.

Take all of this with the speculation get out of jail free card btw. I was arguing just as hard for iPad at WWDC and was completely wrong. Indications though appear to favor September for everything with silent updates on the MBP iMac and mini.
[doublepost=1534852155][/doublepost]As much as people want it the mini isn’t seeing major changes this year. Just a wee bit of something until they revamp the desktop line in 2019.

2019 I’d be willing to bet that you see an ARM powered Apple TV sized mini for consumers , an iMac redesign and the pro goes away (what pro wants a sealed all in one bound to be on selected design anyway) and the modular Mac Pro. The lower end of the Mac Pro (modular) can take the place of the current Mac mini and you rank up specs as needed to make it a workstation.

The reason I gave a little more time to the iPhone and Apple Watch I’m my estimations is because of any software demos they might want to show off such as for the iPhone X and Apple Watch software features that weren’t shown off at WWDC. The iPad Pro will be getting the biggest update by the looks of it, a new design with less bezels and Face ID, I’m looking forward to that announcement and no doubt they will have a video to show off, maybe even some new accessories such as a new keyboard and Apple Pencil.

It is definitely doable especially when you consider last years WWDC was packed with hardware, also the rumoured 13” MacBook/Macbook Air update was rumoured to be at WWDC this year but was delayed (according to Mark Gurman) so it would make sense to announce it at the September event if Apple is planning on getting it out there as soon as possible, as you mention there is also the back to school. Fingers crossed we see all of this at the September keynote I will be very happy if we do.
