Yeah, that'd be nice.

People like to ignore the history of Apple when it's convenient for them. Apple doesn't bring back stuff they've killed off.

TouchID will return right after the headphone jack is put back. /s

If reports are to be believed

https://www.tomsguide.com/us/apple-in-display-touch-id,news-28745.html

Apple is considering whether to bring back its Touch ID to the iPad and iPhone, Patently Apple is reporting, citing reports out of Taiwan. However, rather than offer a physical Touch ID sensor in those devices, Apple is instead planning to bring an in-display Touch ID fingerprint sensor to the devices, according to the report.

Apple is currently evaluating in-display fingerprint sensors from three suppliers — O-film, General Interface Solution, and TPK Holding — the report says. If all goes well, Apple would first bring the sensors to its iPads and then turn around and offer them in its iPhones.

Don't trust Patently Apple. It's a blog site with a lot of wrong information.

Problem with this rumor: in-display fingerprint sensors require OLED because the sensor needs illumination; it will not work with LCD because of the backlight layer.

If Apple is really looking to reduce cost for a thin-bezel iPad, it won't use OLED.

Wasn't sure how I would adapt to FaceID. Now having used for awhile on the XR I cannot imagine going back to TouchID. I had to use the wife's 8+ for awhile the other day. The button was just a nuisance!

I believe that only applies to an optical in display reader. Ultrasonic, which is what apple would use, is more accurate than optical, and can penetrate glass and metal.

Apple needs to do something to regain iPhone sales, and returning Touch ID would go a long way. Despite all the "It's the future" lingo. :apple:

With this part of your post, I completely disagree. Just because Apple changed the biometric security to face ID, do you really think by them offering touch ID under the display is going to regain iPhone sales? I doubt that.

The reason the iPhone sales maybe are not what Apple fully expected in some respects, is because of the influx of the overall price point of the iPhone over the last two years. Biometric security has nothing to do with assisting in iPhone sales, if Apple continues to increase the price of the iPhone annually, that will only push consumers to retain their current devices longer.

Now, where I think Apple could regain sales, is if they offered a more structured price for their iPhones, there seems to be too much of a gap between the XR and XS, and I think Apple could lower the price of the XS if they wanted to, and the reality is, they may have to if consumers are not willing to upgrade their phones, even with all the aggressive marketing Apple has, it’s not enough anymore, the consumer see’s the price point, not all this technology that they may or may not care about.

My understanding is even ultrasonic readers require OLED. There cannot be an air gap as the ultrasonic waves cannot pass through air.

With LCD, there is backlight and there is no way to cut a hole in the backlight layer to install any kind of fingerprint reader.

Just curious as to the increasing reports such as this from BGR last August. I feel something is up. That’s about it. But then again, I’m a whiner who gets upset over the headphone jack being removed per another OpEd writer.

If it's any consolation.. I received a Apple market research survey that actually had "prefer Touch-ID" among the options after selecting the Fece-ID satisfaction rating. This may not mean much. At this point, I really hope they don't bring back Touch-ID and keep the premium phones pricy with only Fece-ID. There's always iPhone 8/8P that's more accessible to consumers. They don't have to, the Fece-ID phones are clearly outselling the Touch-ID ones.

Only if there is a gaurentee of something “Magical” if I’m correct. You’ll need to submit prior certification of practicing “Magic.” If you can provide this document I’ll require additional certification that you are not Tim Cook. If you can meet the set forth standards I’ll be willing to go $15. :apple:

Apple to focus on Face-I’d in the near future. Touch-id passed away last year. It’s gone and never coming back. Get over it.

I have read many threads and tweets, and facebook posts from people wishing apple would return to TouchID and how they love TouchID and hate FaceID. It is possible these same people, (and no one knows the percentage of) could be holding onto their devices longer because they own TouchID. My wife is an example. She Hates FaceID, and refuses to update her 7+. I have tried to get her to upgrade to the 8+ at least but she does not see the reason to.

With apple lowering prices on iPhones and offering more in trade in to boost lagging sales, it is possible we could see Apple return to touchID. Not likely but stranger things have happened.

Just noticed that Samsung S10 will have 5G next spring with ATT and Verizon I thing my next iPhone will be the S10 from my 8+ and when Apple came with the 5G on 2020 as they say hopefully without the notch I can switch back
