Can't see under screen touch ID being a reality anytime soon, even if the technology is advanced enough. But we can hope.

FaceID is fine, but it's not better than TouchID, just different. Having both, so that we could use whichever one was better in a given circumstance, would be ideal.

Agree.

Maybe we’ve gotten to the point where Tim Cook has really doubled down on security and we only know what Apple wants us to know about the 2019 iPhone

Saw that as well. I wonder if this has anything to do with the rumored removal of 3D Touch. Maybe you can’t have both and apple needs to make a sacrifice. Touch ID would certainly cater to more people. But I’d really miss 3D Touch

OK, the difference being, that 3D Touch is expected to be removed this year (2019), in 2020, that rumor states that the iPhone _could_ be using a fingerprint reader under the display, it doesn’t make sense to remove one feature a year before for a fingerprint reader under display in 2020? Not buying it. Not when Apple/Tim Cook clearly stated that Face ID is the future for biometric security. I think Apple has invested way too much in Face ID to allow for a second biometric security option. [That would be very Un-Apple like.]

The dates could be wrong though. I agree Face ID is the future and shouldn’t go away. But more biometric security is always better. A phone that verifies by face, touch, sound, proximity to Apple Watch etc etc would be amazing and totally invisible to the owner of the device. As soon as the trust threshold goes below a certain percentage of one biometric it can call another to increase the trust. If all fails you’ll see the passcode prompt.

This I strongly believe is Apples goal. They couldn’t and maybe still can’t do full screen Touch ID. So they pulled it from the current phones until they have something better.

Keep in mind, if you recall, Craig Federighi did an interview when Face ID launched for the 2017 iPhone X, he stated they experimented with touch ID under the display, which was ‘Plan B’, Face ID was always ‘Plan A’, but they weren’t sure if it would be operable/ready in time, which when Face ID became fully operable, they abandoned touch ID under the display altogether. So it’s not like Apple didn’t consider touch ID under the display in the past, it’s just never been their priority when they believed in Face ID all along being the primary.

I do remember this and believe Apple thought it was the best move at the time. I love Face ID, it works great for me. But there are moments I wish I didn’t have to pick it up unlock or bend over the table so it can see me (iPad Pro is better in that regard). I’m hoping Apple has realized this as well.

Point we’ll taken an underclass Touch ID has its uses like when you’re sitting at a desk or your iPhone is laying on the table

Touch ID isn’t a consideration anymore. I think the reality that some seem to be stuck in, is that they think Apple _should_ offer multiple biometric options, but what Apple should do and will do are two different things. They’re never going to do that, because that’s not how they operate, when has Apple ever offered multiple biometric security options on their iPhones?

Forbes rumored this earlier today for iPads first, then iPhones. Which I guess could be 2019 if it came to the spring 2019 iPads first.

Anyway, I hope it's true. FaceID is fine, but it's not better than TouchID, just different. Having both, so that we could use whichever one was better in a given circumstance, would be ideal.
I agree. While, I don’t hate Face ID, I like touch better.

Don’t agree with your logic there. When did Apple ever offer biometric security on iPhone before Touch ID? I think this will come eventually and that it’s the future for many companies going forward. But we can agree to disagree

When did Apple ever offer biometric security on iPhone before Touch ID?

That doesn’t answer my question, I asked, when has Apple ever offered multiple options for biometric security? They haven’t. They have had every opportunity to offer Face ID AND touch ID if they wanted to on one device, but as I already mentioned to you, they don’t want that, because they experimented with touch ID under the display and abandoned that in favor for Face ID. So there’s your answer right there why Apple believes they only need *one* logical course of biometric security, which is Face ID for the future.

But back to the poster that I quoted, why would Apple need to offer both biometric forms of security? I mean, for what purpose? So it can serve a small demographic that wants to have both biometrics options? That’s not how Apple works.

I think this will come eventually and that it’s the future for many companies going forward.

Apple separates itself from the rest, they don’t do what other companies do, I think anyone that follows Apple already knows that. Apple had the opportunity to use touch ID under the display, they didn’t feel that it was superior to face ID, which is why Face ID is predominate today. There’s no reason to believe that Apple will be using face ID under the display, especially given how secure Face ID is.

I don’t agree that Apple has had the opportunity to have two biometrics working in a way they deemed good. Apple did not want Face ID and a home button Touch ID. They experimented and failed with in screen Touch ID and at the time the tech at least according to working products was limited so a small space. Not something I think Apple would want to do.

Now if they could create a whole screen with Touch ID that would completely change the story

Edit: this is a great article from Rene over at iMore

Do you logically believe this is what Apple will do in the future? Right now the way I see it, the Face ID will be on the iPhone for the next three years at minimum before they consider what they believe would be the next iteration of the most secure biometric form of security, I don’t believe Apple is about providing what the consumer wants, but what’s best for the consumers protection.

I do yes. When I have no idea. I edited my last post with an article worth reading

Personally, I think it would be a cool possibility to require BOTH faceid and touchid. I would not use it, but having the possibility is neat. I love faceid, and hope it only keeps getting better. The combo would have to make the most ardent defenders of privacy happy, no?
