With the new crazy high prices and the fact that it will probably be the last non 5G iPhone, I can see a lot of people taking a hard pass. 5G probably won’t be huge for years but why not wait just another year to get one with 5G?

If the rumors are true about how the triple camera design is going to be I will be passing on the 2019 and probably 2020 iphones. It looks ugly to me and my 8+ is fine. I might replace my mini instead; its a gen 2. Not really a fan of Face ID either; my mug is ugly enough that I don't take selfies why the hell would I want it to unlock my phone?

How good do these cameras have to be? After a while, I kind of think spend your money on a stand alone camera if you need it to be that great.

I would expect the triple lens camera to be here longer than just until the 2020 iPhone, Apple doesn’t usually have major design changes with their camera on a year-to-year basis, which the last was the dual camera with the iPhone 7 Plus in 2016.

I skipped last year just didn't see the XS as much of an upgrade from my X I'll most likely upgrade in 2020. Curious to see what the XR offers, I like the size the XR best out of all three X models.

I upgraded to the XS from the X last year and I generally do every year. However if the rumors of losing force touch are true, this will be the first year I don't upgrade to the newest device since the iPhone 4.

I absolutely love force touch and I find it so convenient. I don't think I want to use a phone without it.

If this is the case, will the majority of people on this forum skip upgrading this year? I don't see any other outcome.

I have a XS Max, as does my wife. We will both be enthusiastically upgrading this year.

I have owned every single iPhone as I upgrade every year but I stopped at the Xs because it was a terribly pathetic update.

I'll be getting the 11 as long as it's got reduced notch and an improved triple camera with night sight. iOS 13 is probably more important to me and whether I stay on iOS this year though.

The notch looks very dated compared to many now and especially against the hole punch.

2019 is an S year for the Xr and an upgrade year for the XS, which was the S year for the X. Expect big jumps on the cameras on the XS and XS Max replacements, little change on the Xr which will either keep its price or drop down to the current 8 pricing whilst the 8 drops down to current 7 pricing. Think of the Xr as a more expensive C model of iPhone going forward.

There isn’t anything indicating that the notch will be reduced. In order for that to happen, there has to be a reduction in the components or some type of minimalization, and I don’t think Face ID has has matured/evolved enough to have that happen quite yet for the 2019 iPhone. I don’t expect any changes with the notch for at least another year, maybe if at all. (Apple is traditionally very minimalistic when it comes to changes with their hardware on a year-to-year basis.)

I’m still on an SE and am holding out for 5G and USB-C. I really wanted to upgrade this year but it doesn’t seem likely at this point.

I vow not to upgrade; I already bought a ton of stuff from Apple last year. I saw no reason to upgrade my iPad Pro and it's the same with the phones. They're just getting too expensive.

I believe more and more people are unlikely upgrading since these phones X, XS, XS Max cost well over $1K. The 3 lens camera is something I couldn't care less about. The XS Max is capable of taking great enough photos. I'll holdout for XIS and see what Apple offers.

I have just recently upgraded to the 8 plus. Love it and works great. No need to upgrade until this one craps out.

Honest question, how can you say that you ‘couldn’t care less about the three lens camera’, but not even knowing what it’s capable of producing in terms of results? I don’t think here anyone knows what the triple lens camera is quite capable of yet, but I would personally reserve my judgment until the fall Keynote before making any decisions.

Iphone 8 and 8+ owner here. Used to upgrade every six months to a year back in the days, but these days the technological jump is very incremental and not worth the hit on the wallet to upgrade as often. I'm in the 2-3yr camp now. On an annual basis, I am willing to spend $300-$400 max, so a phone I keep for two years will have a max cost capped at $800, so a three year phone will have a psychological cap at $1200. In reality though, none of the phones I ever purchased, either subsidized or paid upfront costed me over $700, so for me, the jump to a $1000 phone will take a lot to appeal to me. Three years in terms of cellphone technology will have changed enough to entice me to upgrade.

It's sort of like when you buy a car, for example, and the following year, there's a feature, like Car Play, which I would love as a feature in my car, but you realize, is spending more for that feature and having to replace a 1 year old car even worth it at this time just to get Car Play (3-lens camera), probably not. I can probably hold off another year or two (XIS or XII).

I had the iPhone 7 Plus in its launch year. I had the iPhone X in its launch year. And I bought in January of this year the iPhone Xs. I'm pretty excited about this year's iPhones. I really wanted an ultrawide camera.

Fair enough. And that’s a good example that you used with CarPlay, because that is something that I also would opt for specifically for a car entertainment system versus the shoddy proprietary versions the auto manufacturers use (I.e Entune, Chevy Mylink, ect.)

Yes! CarPlay was a huge factor in me deciding what my next car would be in my last purchase.

Looking to finalize a car deal here soon (Either a 17’ GT350 or 18/19 Charger Scat Pack), both offer CarPlay, but my point, is if they didn’t offer CarPlay, that would be almost be enough to stray me away from those purchasing considerations to another competitor that does. Carplay is the standard in my opinion.
