Just wondering if anyone here is planning to buy one of the new iPad Pros?

Interested to hear what you guys think about the M1 addition and the miniLED only being in the larger model. I know these topics exist in the iPad section of the forums, but I'd rather stay away from that echo chamber.

The iPad Pro looks amazing from a hardware standpoint. It's a complete feat of engineering.

That being said: iPadOS (which is really just iOS) simply does not justify the incredible hardware in the iPad. iOS just can't keep up.

They should seriously consider making iPadOS a fork of macOS instead of iOS.

I’d buy in a heartbeat if they made a macOS version for iPad - so much is lost by using iOS.

Lol.. what’s with the echo chamber comment?

And yes, I plan on buying the 12.9 iPad Pro… not really concern with the 16GB RAM models. And I’m definitely excited for WWDC in regards to what was announced with the M1 iPad Pros... something tells me Apple plans to do big things with iPadOS.

I made a comment back in some other thread. But virtualization apps will soon come to iPadOS, while iPadOS is limited in is current form. Parallels or VM Fusion could make things interesting when they come to iPadOS.

The echo chamber comment was mostly a joke. The regular iPad and IPhone forums here are mostly comprised of people that love everything Apple does. And that's not the best place to get unbias answers sometimes.

I also wonder what Apple plans to do with the iPad pros from a software standpoint. The last generation of chips were already more powerful than anything ipadOS could throw at them. Either they added the M1 just to flex or they are planning something at WWDC. If they start adding a bridge for MacOS apps it would open things up big time and finally make the iPad a genuine laptop replacement.

I understand. I kinda knew what you meant, I get it. But we all have our biases… that‘s a given when it comes to the society we live in. I just try to be as balanced as possible.

I agree that iPadOS was already powerful enough with the chips already inside it, but I think in order to become a more “pro” device… they needed to do more hardware wise to achieve a diverse iPadOS.

And, I’ve already been in the camp that the iPad can be a laptop replacement, however… it’s probably some workarounds to complete certain tasks. But I do understand some application might not be available on the platform whereas a traditional OS is needed.

I am waiting to see what happens at WWDC. It a shame the 11" doesn't the new display.

Agreed. If the 11 had miniled and was $100 more I would buy it in a heartbeat. I still might get the 11. I just don't know if I can justify a $1500 12.9 once the storage is upgraded and magic keyboard is added. For that price I could get decked out MacBookz which I am considering.

Anyone have a MacBook and iPad pro? If soz which do you use more and for what?

I have the M1 MBA and a 2020 11" iPad Pro. I use the iPad Pro at work several days a week. At home, I use the MBA and the iPad is in Side Car mode a lot of the time.

See last comment.

I have a 2018 11" that was replaced with AC a few months ago, dropped it on concrete so wouldn't get rid of it as its near new, just gave my daughter my M1 air for uni so i am interested in the 12.9, but i like a iPad i can hold one handed and don't use a keyboard or pencil, so probs won't do anything.
Too expensive anyway.

More interested in replacing my late 2015 27" fusion iMac, but the 24" with white bezels and colours are a turn off, will have to wait and se what the next 27" or whatever it is will be like, probs just the same as 24" just bigger lol.

How is that a biased comment when I said I thought it looked great? The specs are overkill for what is essentially a mobile OS, I'm hardly bashing it. I'm not brand loyal and certainly don't stoop to bashing products because I have nothing better to do.

Just forget it. It was mostly a joke. If I want information on an Apple device, the iPad or iPhone forums are a great place to get it. There's a lot of knowledgeable posters there. But in my personal experience I've also found people aren't very critical of apple there. That's all. And I think you'll actually find a lot of people in the Alternative section use Apple devices, especially iPads.

My everyday ‘computer’ is a 2018 12.9” iPad Pro in a Magic Keyboard. I have an iMac and just recently also picked up a M1 MBA to see what all the fuss is about. ;)

As much as I’d love to have a new iPP, I really have no justification for the upgrade. My 2018 still is blazing fast—as many others here have commented, it was excessive overkill in the hardware department when it first came out and really still is (I have the 1TB LTE model so I’ve got 6GB of RAM).

The M1 is no joke...the MBA screams and the battery life improvements are no lie. But again, my current iPP is doing great so the MBA is going to my daughter for her last year of high school and should also get her through her undergrad studies. And for context, it’ll be replacing a 2020 13” MPB with an i7 CPU and upgraded RAM/storage I got for her last May—the M1 really is that much of an improvement. She’s uses it all day long and has to charge up at least once a day. And I hear the fans spinning up on it more than I think they should. After just a couple days of testing it out, she was ready to switch.

I really think we’re not getting the whole story yet in regards to the new iPad Pros. I think Apple is going to be addressing these questions come WWDC and we’re going to see some pretty significant changes. If I was a betting man, I wouldn’t be surprised to see iPad OS versions of Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro and maybe even Xcode. Why the hell would the iPad Pro have a 16GB option if there were some software that could take advantage of it? It seems to me that switching from A chips to M CPUs (in reality, we’re talking marketing here) is meant to imply these iPad Pros are capable of being full Mac alternatives for those who want a touch screen, ’pencil’ capable device.

Probably will get one....but, since i dont care about the OS (being ipados and not macos or whatever) but more about what apps i can access, i will wait until June WWDC and decide then
If we get finalcutpro, xcode and all others stuff....the OS becomes almost irrelevant for me, the apps are more important than the operating system
I mean, Apple never jump so hard on RAM with the ipads...we just got the 6gb ram on the latest ipad pro for all storages and now, another jump for all to 8gb ram and for the 1/2T you get 16gb ram?! it must means something
And at WWDC i bet we can have the answer...it will be either the Apple apps are coming to ipadOS...or they will let macOS for dual boot on arm architecture ...or...but small chances, nothing will happen , but i hope not
So, WWDC becomes even more exiting for a lot of us

If I was in your shoes…. I wouldn’t upgrade. You just picked up a M1 MBA and already have another Mac on top of a capable iPad Pro 2018 model.

But I really did consider getting a M1 MBA or MBP, but I wanted to stay with the iPad. And all the questions about WWDC about whether the iPadOS will see big changes, this pretty much addressed that with the announcement of the newest iPad Pros. I’m geeked for when the new iPad Pro arrives at my door and when the announcement of iPadOS 15 at WWDC.

I would've pulled the trigger on a MBA by now, which would've been my first Mac, but a giant part of what I need from my device (MBA or iPad) is media consumption which is where the iPad shines. But man, I don't know if I can justify $1500 on a IPP 12.9 and magic keyboard with ipadOS in it's current state.

I certainly won’t be getting one with 16GB is ram as 1TB and 2TB is overkill for me

That said looking forward to the mini led display. I just hope WWDC we see more to take advantage of that M1 chip

Thats what makes me think Apple is planning some sort of MacOS crossover. Because 16GB is such giant overkill for iPadOS.

I don't plan on buying a Magic Keyboard... I think the cost of it is too steep given the rigidity of it. But I'm trying to debate when I should sell my current iPP... I do have a dock/stand, but I'm going to sell that in favor of the HoverBar Duo.

I already have a Keychron Mechanical Keyboard and the MM2, Im just undecided on the storage.

As much as I agree with you on 16GB of RAM being overkill on an iPad. If it's the only model available during launch period... I'll go with the 1TB variant. Because I think cellular models don't get much attention from the product line.. I think Wifi models are more popularly sought after.

Yeah I would be selling a 10.5 IPP in favor of this upgrade. But damn, a 512GB 12.9 IPP with magic keyboard is $1600-1700 bucks. For that price I could get get a 1TB MBA with 16GB of RAM.

If Apple would have just added the damn XDR display to the 11" model this decision would be so easy.

I wouldn’t dare look at that 512gb model, that’s a not a smart purchase IMO. 128gb or 256gb seems like the better choice. But yeah, I understand.. added that magic keyboard seems ridiculously expensive. That’s why I never been a fan of the Magic Keyboard, when there’s plenty of cheaper alternatives.

Definately buying one just not sure which. I dropped my current-gen iPad Pro 11" last year and cracked the screen. Not that bad but still annoying. I am thinking an upgrade to the 12.9" for that XDR display is in order.

At the stage now where I don't really need a laptop but it's useful for some things which can all be done on an iPad and would prefer that. But, I just think the 11" is the sweet spot in terms of practical size. I have time to ponder over it before order day :)
