It’s the initiation of fast charging that seems to be the issue. The 100 watt Anker charger might not be powerful enough for fast charging. I’m still running 12.0, and the 140 watt Apple charger fast charges as expected. I’m convinced it’s a software bug.
I can say on my M1 Maxx on the 12.1 beta this problem does not happen.
Hopefully is that, and when they release the final version of 12.1 it will be solve

"Thanks for the replies. Just had a call with Apple Support and the issue has been solved. For those who are interested/affected by the same issue here is what I was instructed to do:
Shut down MacBook –> Click and hold power button for 10 seconds –> Now a new menu appears, click on “Options” and after that on “Continue” –> Log in to your account –> Now you should be in recovery mode. Here I was told to click on the apple logo on the top left and shut down the MacBook again.
After that I tested it with the magsafe cable and the issue was gone. I was able to charge the MacBook while it was shut down."
Just tried the recovery mode thing - didn't work for me (MBP 16" 12.0.1).
I was wondering if the issue is caused by the 'Al Dente' app I have installed to limit charging to 80%. The app seems to work as it's supposed to, and my battery is currently sitting at exactly 80%.

Guys. We already has a workaround that works and we already know it's a software problem that only happens on 12.0.1 to up
AlDente has nothing to do with it.
Tldr, the workaround is to connect MagSafe to it then turn the laptop off then you can close the lid. Or if your laptop is off. Just plug it in and open the lid. When it's on login screen just click shutdown. Done. Close the lid and it'll charge just fine

Another person on Reddit tried this and it was only a temporary fix and went back to not powering on while shut down.
MacRumors finally wrote an article about this. Hopefully, it will put a little more pressure on Apple to fix it.

Happy to report that the charging issue seems to be fixed.
On a laptop that is shut down and the lid is closed (admire the glory of the 2021 MacBook Pro for a few seconds, will you?)
1. Connect MagSafe and switch it on
2. Amber blinks once and then stays constant
3. Sound only comes once.
Another thing:
4. While in this state, when you lift the lid to start the laptop, the charging pauses for a moment it seems, because the amber blinks once and then resumes.
I like this. All in all, it seems fixed. I will now stop charging while working and charge it during shut off to know if the charging works as expected or is that something that is still not working.

Also since you're on the new beta. Any issues ? Other than the full screen gesture kinda bugging sometimes and I've heard that if you sleep it it'll get stuck in 60hz mode. Anything else that is kinda important in bugs?

I had under 70% when I tried it. I am now using it on battery and hoping to drop the charge to under 60 in some hours to try it again. But I am fairly confident this stands fixed now.
No issue whatsoever right now ... the Tap To Click is fixed, too. Liking this beta on the 2021 MBP 16".

No other noticeable bug in my workflow. I had only two noticeable issues, the Tap To Click and the Charging. I never cared for charging, since it was a minor annoyance at best, but the Tap To Click was disruptive to my years of muscle memory from the hard-to-press 2011 MBP trackpads. That is fixed. It is now as feather-touch as the 2011 MBP, and the 2017 MBA.
I used to have some issues with the 2016 MBP, the bug might have its origins there. With this fix on the 2021 MBP, I suppose it might be performing better on the 2016 ones, too. This is conjecture based on rudimentary thought and logic since I do not have the 2016 to test.
Do you use apps in full screen and go back and forth using the trackpad gestures? The 3/4 fingers to the left or right? Is it really that bad as in the jankyness bug thing? I'm considering moving to beta 4 from beta 1. But still considering.
While I cannot dream to speak for you, but I personally would move to this beta (and have from beta 3).
I do use full-screen apps occasionally:
- Two documents in Microsoft Word side-by-side
- Safari in normal window mode
- Ulysses in full screen
No jerkiness that I noticed going back and forth between screens multiple times. I hadn't noticed it previously and certainly not right now for informing you.
Thank you for the info. Yeah i use full screen apps all the time and it's critical for me that it doesn't bug out . As long as that works and the only bugs are minor like 60hz after sleeping. It should be fine I think
Edit : any memory leak so far?
My current workflow might not be triggering it, perhaps, since I have had zero memory leaks since owning this device and seeing it through 12.0.1 to 12.1 beta 4 now.
The Control Centre memory leak issue is something I never faced either.

macOS Monterey 12.1 installed, and since about a week I'm having power issues only in a specific room in my office, so it may be an electrical system issue of the building.
There are three outlets here and a random one of these situations happens (dice roll):
- working perfectly
- completely non-working (Magsafe light off, no sign whatsoever)
- at first non-working, but starts working after some seconds
- (never seen before today) blinking amber, not charging, the macbook doesn't feel anything (no sound, nothing in System Information)
I work here since two years and before last month I had a 2015 mbp, everything worked fine until about a week ago.
Phone and iPad charging are all good.
I still have to see if other coworkers' laptops show issues as well.
Of course I always try and make different adjustments every time, such as unplugging the usb-c, then the magsafe, then changing the outlet, then changing with the magsafe disconnected... couldn't find any real solution.

What about with regular USB-C charging? What about with a non-Apple USB C charger.
Just tried: now it also does this at home, so it probably doesn't really depend on the outlet power.
Using a simple USB-C cable, it works (original 67W charger and extension cable from my previous mbp).
I'm probably going to buy a 2m 100W USB-C cable until the next OS update, then I'll probably need it some day anyway.
Magsafe with other chargers, in chronological order:
Beikell 20W USB-C charger (first try): amber blinking
iPad 20W USB-C charger: works perfectly
Beikell 20W USB-C charger (second try): works
Original 67W charger: completely dead
Beikell 20W USB-C charger (third try): completely dead
It really looks random, at this point.
EDIT: updated to 12.2, still the same for now.

Sorry to bump this older thread, but I've been experiencing a similar issue lately w/ a 14" MBP over the past couple months, a machine I had for over a year without issue. This happens when the machine is actually on, and it seems to occur regardless of charger or cable used; happens both MagSafe and any other Apple or 3rd party regular USB-C cable.
One interesting thing to note is what iStat reports. I will hear a chime and sometimes it will show different values for the charger... sometimes 60w, sometimes 15 watts, on what is a 100w charger. Sometimes it will chime and say the machine is not on the charger. Sometimes I can use the machine for awhile without it happening, but 80% of the time, it does this cycling every minute or so regardless of power source and cable used.
It definitely seems to be an issue w/ the machine. It's on the latest Ventura, 13.3.1(a). Anyone else still experiencing this or found more recent fixes?

Have you tried other USB c charger? It might be the charger since it seems to be the PD that is bugging out. Especially since it happens on both MagSafe and normal USB C port
Yes, it happens over a variety of USB chargers and cables (both Apple and 3rd party for each).
