I got my replacement MacBook Pro 16" with Monterey 12.0 and can confirm charging works properly when the machine is shut down and the lid is closed. Seems to be a bug in 12.0.1 which hopefully gets fixed in the next SW version. I did a bug reporting as well. I think that's a good way to ensure making them aware of this issue.

What do you mean by replacement though?

I have the same problem with my M1 MacBook Pro and after unsuccessfully trying everything suggested I have found a solution on the UK Apple help site, would you believe it ! It is quite simple, Close the MacBook and wait 30 seconds before connecting the MagSafe. I sometimes get one beep but the charging is then normal. Hope it helps.

In MacBookPro M1 Pro 16 inch the solution doesn't work

Same here.

While waiting for an update, I was thinking:
What if I do a factory reset? A clean install?
Would be back to Monterrey 12.0.0 or would be already on Monterrey 12.0.1?
Thanks

MacBook Pro 16" here, the same problem after updating to 12.0.1.
So am I right that less powerful chargers (like 65W one for Air) won't have this problem with Macbook pro 16"? I was going to get less powerful one anyway instead of bulky 140W, easier to carry and I don't need that ultra fast charging.

They want to replace my machine. I’m very confused and disappointed. It could take weeks or even months

So after waiting a week, I received the replacement that apple insisted on giving me. It took me about 4 hours to get the item from the store and reinstall all my applications and setting.
The charging was flawless, at 50%, before the Mac OS update. After the Mac OS update, the charging issue returned.

Here are the take aways:
1. This is a software issue.
2. Don't waste your time trying to fix it.
3. If apple asks for a "Capture" [exchange] tell them no and save your precious time.

You’ve acknowledged it’s a software issue. I agree. How would replacing the hardware help?
I don’t know. They want the machine to test. I can’t imagine how its not software. But they’re offering to replace it?

Too late been through it myself. Mind if I ask which configuration you had? I had everything Maxed out and I’m worried about the timeframe on my replacement. Haven’t heard back yet.

I bought my 16" pro base on Nov 1. My machine is having exactly the same problem - batt level below 80%, power off, lid closed, amber light flashing and machine beeping when MagSafe is connected. I don't remember having this problem before update to 12.0.1. I'm also noticing the light on MagSafe stays amber even at 100% when Optimized Battery Charging is checked. I'm going to wait for the next firmware update before deciding what to do. If I read it correctly I have until Jan 8 2022 to return the machine since Apple's extended holiday return policy covers MacBook bought between Nov 1 and Dec 25.

I got a feeling they'll take their sweet time with this [~6 months]. I recall with the iphone 6, there was an issue where it couldn't connect to wifi AC and bluetooth at the same time. It took them over 1 year to fix it even though they knew about the problem within the first month of release. But for this issuse, it's worth waiting to see what happens. Maybe they're nimbler now

I HAVE THE SAME ISSUE and it goes away and comes back by itself. one time I left it blinking and the charging started after a bit. but the fact that Apple Support doesn't know what's going on sucks.
I hope I can help some people with this (I am not sure if this has already been mentioned, apologies if it has) ... I spoke to apple and was told this is a firmware related issue. I had the problem, followed these steps to reset the mac back to factory power settings and the problem is gone. Magsafe flashes once & then charges without flashing/beeping. The steps are:

Do you do this with the charger plugged in or not?

If we, on this forum, know it's the firmware. Then surely apple must know that too. But the fact that they are requesting the exchange of certain laptops makes me wonder if something else is amiss... I mean, I imagine that they lose revenue as a result of the exchanges. Unless they're just repackaging the captured laptops and sending one users laptop to another, hehehe

It is easy to understand that Apple is asking to get back the Mac, which can stimulate the economy and logisticians to have jobs, warehousemen have jobs, and more importantly, the new Macs sent back are 12.0, and yes, the problem is gone until the user is updated to 12.0.1 again, and then the problem reappears.

I did not update my replacement so that I can wait for 12.1. Since this is a software issue, replacement will NOT solve the issue.

Same issue here with 12.01 and Apple official brick (16") - Using Anker 100W charger works. It blink once, and start charging

I’m no electrical engineer but that sounds like a combination of hardware and software problem?

Prob a software issue most likely. How 140w power delivery is being handled etc . Especially since it starts only on 12.0.1 and not 12.0 from reports
