Only once, I was among the first group allowed in an Apple store as doors opened, with staff lined up clapping and cheering. Great experience, I think back on how much fun was that!

I waited all day long in the rain outside the Apple store for the very first iPhone. There was no online ordering for the phone back then. This is much more fun.
Only two iPhones I didn't by were 3GS and Xs....Couldn't get 6s and 11 because I was traveling to India on day one but rest all I have gotten them on launch day.
For a couple years it was outside, then they opened the mall up in the years after that. But lately I've just been ordering it and having it held at the UPS CC. I then pick it up right when they open, so I don't have to wait all day for the delivery driver

I have camped outside before this preorder thing started from 1 AM. Even when preorder started initially, it used to 2 AM central.
You get the social aspect of standing out in the line + convenience of not having to camp out...win/win for all. You are right. This is better!
Wasn't that great, though? I remember leaving work early and getting to the AT&T store just after noon. I walked in and asked the manager where he wanted me to start the line. He looked at me and told me he had no idea. So, I just stood outside to the side of the door. A teenager came up a few minutes later and we talked the afternoon away. My sister showed up around 3:00 with a nice cold drink. At 4:30 they blinded out the windows and locked the doors. At 6:00 they opened up and said to come in five at a time. I walked up to the counter, plunked down my $600 and walked out to a cheering line of about 40 or 50 people.
The owner of my company called me in his office a couple days later and asked me to show him the phone. I showed him and he immediately told his general manager to cut me a check for $300. Shortly after that, the price dropped a couple hundred bucks because of sluggish sales and to assuage the folks who paid full price, we all got $100 Apple gift cards.
Pretty good experience all in all.

Anyone who would 'know' wouldn't be allowed to tell you they know, but based on prior years I would guess that the embargo will lift either Tuesday or Wednesday.
The original iPad's launch had coffee, water, and a guy playing bagpipes. It was awesome.
Usually on the Wednesday before release.
