If you are looking at iPads, are you now strongly considering an M1 iPad?

Contrary to the title, this is the year I am giving up on the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. Will probably sell my 11" IPP and replace it with the much more handy iPad Mini.

I casted NO because I already have it for one year. So I hope the answer is correct :)

I always was considering upgrading to an M1 iPad because my 9.7 iPP is getting long in the tooth; whether an Air or Pro depends on if I can live with 256GB instead of 512GB.

I’m writing this from my 11” M1. I’m trading in a 2018 12.9. Figured I may as well jump while my 2018 had value and I get a fresh battery too. I thought I’d miss the screen real estate in procreate but it’s not as bad as I expected.

now if this 14.1” iPad is real…

Just wondering but why downsize? Other than stage mgt the 12.9 I think would be more than ok.

Well, I was back and forth on this. The 12.9 is great on my desk and for drawing but a bit large to use as a true tablet.

To go to the 12.9 M1, it would have been almost $700 ish out of pocket where the 11” was around $400. Since they are already a year old, I couldn’t swallow the extra $300 bucks.

I’ll re evaluate once they update the Pro line.

This M1 feature exclusivity nonsense has pushed me to just give up on the iPad. I have a 12.9" 2017 iPad Pro that still works fine. When it no longer does, I will probably go for a MacBook Air or similar. Probably not this year‘s model until it comes down in price significantly, I’m not spending over 1500 euros on an Air with 8 GB RAM and miserable disk space.

iPadOS improvements have not been particularly significant for years and it still seems like a platform with an OS and apps that cannot fully utilize it. Gating features to the M1 that the slightly older models should be perfectly capable of running just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

After WWDC, the Pros are now back in the cut and it’s time to get our swerve on.
I’m going to stick to my A12Z iPad Pro, probably wait for M2 or M3 iPP, but I am sooooo glad Apple have placed harder focus on making the Prow more worth it, makes me happy that I left my Air 2 for a Pro.

The below is very interesting on how Apple have segmented iPad OS 16 across iPads, iPad Airs and iPad Pros

Wow, you're the first one I've seen, who has a pre-M1 iPad Pro, react positively to iPad OS 16.

They say don't buy an iPad based off what it might be able to do or what it might have, but Apple has released products and given them new features every year for years. Expecting that is no different from expecting an iPhone to come out every September, you're pretty sure it's going to happen. We now see a lot of people actually do buy things with this in mind.
