Ferrari were nowhere all weekend and it was believed they might be worried about reliability and were running the cars at 8/10ths until Qualifying. So if RBR and Ferrari are fragile, bodes well for Alonso in the race...

Big deal. That Red Bull is so fast, Max will easily beat Alonso starting from P15.

Alonso won’t stand a chance.

Don‘t be too sure. This was a brand new gearbox in Max’s RB19. That’s 2 failures in 2 days. If it has to be replaced a drive at Warp Speed from 15th May not be prudent until they figure out the issues. I believe Sergio has gone through a gearbox already as well……….

Great effort from Fred. Could be excitement up front with Fred and Sergio.

Just sayin…….
Yup anything can happen. It was a drive shaft issue. From my perspective I’ve rather have this happen during qualifying opposed to during the race. But look at last year it was DNF after DNF and still a landslide victory.

Since Max was also 1 second per lap faster than the first non-Red Bull car in practise, Max was probably overdoing it in practise which could have caused the car problems.

So I‘m not convinced the Red Bull is “fragile”, rather than Max pushing too hard in practice.

Fingers crossed reliability issues this season make it more exciting than last season. It would be cool to see Alonso win tomorrow and break his decade drought. He looks like he’s enjoying F1 again.

Agreed. He is sooo happy. Even has that swagger back when walking around the paddock.

Edit from previous post: RBR confirms it was a broken driveshaft on Max’s RB19. So not a Gearbox issue. Time will tell.

I'm inclined to agree. The RB19 probably winces every time Max gets in....... ;)

Alonso to do Perez at the front from the start is my expectation. Then it’s just a case of how long it takes Max to dispatch the midfield. Won’t help his tyres. At least it will be interesting. If that driveshaft didn’t fail, Max would just drive off into the distance.

Whilst I'd love for Alonso to get a win, I'd be happy with just a podium finish. Getting to first from 15 is a very tall order for Max. I hope Pérez takes this opportunity, keeps his cool, maintains his pace and doesn't drop back. He is a great drive, but needs to keep it up. It would be wonderful for him to get a nice clear win. And great for the Red Bull team points.

I think on this circuit, Max will end up in 4-7 position. A lot will depend on through the first lap, and subsequent restarts.

Oh, and just as Max is about to overtake Lewis, Lewis will go for a pit stop again ;)

It was only a driveshaft so no grid place penalty for Max sadly. If he still wins from 15th then it’s season over.

Well that was anti-climatic.

Congrats to Perez for the win, though I think he was fortunate Max was worried about his car's health and did not push as hard as he could and settled for second.

Martin Brundle was spot on when he said every other team is fielding a Formula 2 car, in comparison to the pace of the Red Bulls. RBR need to win 21 of 23 races to beat AMG Mercedes' 2016 record (on percentage) and I think they have a legitimate shot at taking all 23 races.

Alonso secures third. AMG once again stuffs up the strategy by not forcing Russel to give fourth to Lewis who was on faster tires and could have probably contested for third. Still, 4th and 5th are decent enough and they finished ahead of Ferrari.

As for McLaren... Daniel must be thankful he was pushed out.

Amazing to get from 15 to 2nd by Max. Really not easy on this circuit. And really well done by Sergio looks like he managed to stay awake until the end and drive really fast.

MacLaren and Ferarri what on earth is going on. I feel sorry for Lando and Charles especially.

Oh no. I know rules are rules it just doesn’t seem fair that Alonso looses his podium place because a Jack touched his car.

It has no material impact on his performance. Such a shame after such a good job done.

George Russel doesn’t deserve that third place at all.

Firstly Congratulations to Fernando Alonso on his 100th Podium at age 41. Penalty or not. Truly a sight to witness. Made me smile a long time. The ARM23 fits him like a glove.

Interesting to see Mercedes with better race performance than Ferrari. Will be interesting to watch the progression.

Finally, congratulations to Sergio on his 5th F1 win. Not really sure if Max was letting off a bit the last 12 laps from the vibration. Probably would have been closer racing up front without it. Definitely backed off the last 4 laps setting up the blistering last lap. Regardless, like Martin Bumble stated. “They make the others look like F2.” Not sure if I’d go that far, especially since they were “Bumbling Comments,” but my god the RB19 is amazing. That rear wing is the secret IMO. They average +17mph on the straights when it opens. Insane.

It will be interesting to watch RBR control the Dynamics between their drivers. Definite mind games going on in the cool down room from Sergio’s earlier radio interactions thinking there might be something going on with the target lap time the team wanted.

Then in the cool down room he was grilling Max about if he was told the time of the fastest lap and Max was like “Ya, I just asked what the fastest lap time was.”
Horner actually told him “We are not concerned with that Max.”

So Max takes fastest lap at the end. Sergio can’t respond, looses 2 points and Max comes out still leading the WDC. Max is in Sergio’s head now.

Off to Melbourne.………..

No he didn’t. However in the past it’s been a 10 sec penalty. Need to appear to be trying to be consistent. He will get number 100 in Australia. 😏😏

I agree, there was some interesting dynamics. It was a bit odd as well how Sergio was questioning his own race engineer. Sergio demonstrated he can maintain it for a race. Just need to keep this up. But yes in the cool-down room and during his interview he seemed surprised max put down a fastest lap in the last lap.

I feel for the engineers as it looked like Jos was on a war path regarding car reliability.

The original belief was Alonso would get a 5 second penalty, but with it being 10 seconds, that does elevate Russel to 3rd. So his demand to stay in front of Lewis due to Alonso's penalty was the right call on his part, even if he had the wrong penalty in mind. :)

What I don’t get is why it took them so long to decide this. I mean he served the original penalty so early on. So why didn’t they announce this earlier.

On a different note I thought Max overtaking was a master class. He was so constraint, waited for the straight, avoided battles, and just sailed past. It was beautiful.

Yes, rules need to be applied consistently, but seriously, Fred gained no advantage from the Jackman screwing up a touching the back of the AMR23. He still pushed it further and jacked when the clock ended.

I like George, but he is P3 from a mistake by Fred’s Rear Jackman. His driving nor the performance of the W14 were in any way a contributing factor.

This just popped up, I haven’t seen any of the race but Alonso getting a podium back must be good.

Good race, well done Perez, although really he was only fighting Max at the end. Don’t understand the hoohaa over Alonso? Glad he’s kept third as he worked hard for that.
could we see reliability issues cripple the RB’s though and Alonso winning races! Now that would be one to write home about.
Go Aston go.

Nice to see the Stewards come to their senses and reverse the penalty on appeal. Even if the rear jack man was guilty of touching the car too early, waiting 35 laps until the end of the race to actually look at the infraction and assign a penalty was baloney. This meant the team had no option to try a strategy that could have kept him in third.

At the time, I was not impressed with the Safety Car considering there was zero risk of an incident, but evidently the GPS on the Aston Martin reported it was still on the track so that is why they threw it.
