I'm completely disinterested in those benchmarks purely because they are under OS X.

Well I'm interested because I woud prefer to play my games in OSX.

And I don't think Apple will update the drivers once a month like ATI/AMD does so choose your games wisely :p.

Oh, I think anyone who's owned a mac for a reasonable length of time knows that.

I'm not defending the cards, I was just pointing out inconsistencies in the benchmarks. However, I am pleased that it appears to be a 2600XT as opposed to the regular 2600 mobile. Also as it seems you've kept up with some of the info out there you will also know that there isn't many choices in newer midrange cards that support DX10. Unless you're one of those that's holding out for apple to shoehorn a 2900 into the imac.:)

BTW Haoshiro in another thread posted his benchmarks for HL2: Lost Coast at these scores surely all hope is not lost.:)

I'll have more tests later, but this should give a basic idea of the performance of these new iMacs for gaming.

Systems:

Benchmarks:
  1. Default - 1024x768, All Settings "High", HDR Enabled, No AA, No AF, Trilinear filtering
  2. High Resolution - Increased resolution to 1680x1050

Results:
  • iMac (Mid 2007)
    1. 122 FPS
    2. 77 FPS
  • iMac (Early 2006)
    1. 78 FPS
    2. 44 FPS

Note the new iMac has half as much RAM and is still a good 37-43%

Oh I am waiting on the nvidia refresh to the G80, personally. AMD/ATI's part is just too sporadic for my taste.

I'm with you, ATI seems to have underwhelmed many people with their most recent offerings. I just wish Apple updated their gpu's more often.

They expected more from a part that was 6+ months late. And the fact that the 2900XT is only a mid high end (ie is usually only as fast as the GTS 640MB) card makes ATI/AMD's stance all the more odd.

Anyone try Company of Heroes on the new iMac using Win XP? What kind of performance did you get? Would be neat to know cause they updated it to use DX 10

I have the new 24" 2.4 GHZ iMac and was running BF2 in Boot Camp. I was running at 1920x1200 resolution with everything on low and getting 70 to 100 FPS. But that's just me, you could theoretically run it at 1024x768 with everything on medium and high and get the same results. I like running it in the native resolution though.

Download it....:p Then buy it when you down load it....

i would but that would dig way deep into my monthly quota!!

that is really quite respectable.. infact that is REALLY respectable!!! i think...

3DMark from PC mag

Here is a link to a PC mag review of a 20" 2.4GHz in which they ran a 3Dmark 06 test.

And the iMac's ATI Radeon HS 2600 Pro graphics helped it gain a very good score of 3,784 on 3DMark06. It's not a blazing 3D performer, but it holds it own against gaming-oriented midprice systems such as the Velocity Micro Campus Edition 2007 (5,112) and CyberPower Gamer Ultra 8500SE (4,428).

I'm not very fond of 3DMark06 right now. A lot of 8xxx and 2xxx Series cards have gotten higher scores then older cards but get beaten by older cards in gaming results.

I understand the improvement in shader performance but these cards need a little more all around performance.

finaly!someone who listens to me when im saying this card is optomized for newer games while most of u knuckleheads have been trying to check the cards performance on older games exactly what its not optomized for !

Exactly! I mean what has it been now, A week since it came out. Somebody send one of these to tomshardware and then we would get the figues we want.

You don't just test it once and post the results. You make sure each setup has software configuration that is as close as humanly possible.

You people are ridiculous. Buy your own iMacs and comparison machines and do it your damn self. Else, shut up and wait. Impatient spoiled brats you are.

THANK YOU!!

Granted 3dmark isnt the "end all be all" .. but its atleast a starting point for a base reference that I can use to compare it to the P-O-S antique Windows PC I use for gaming..

Here here! Someone earlier asked if anyone remembered the FX5200 cards which were the reason Nvidia lost ground to ATI - I do, I'm running one of these craptastic cards in my pc.

And to all those comments about lowest common denominator when people check out specs - how true! If I tell a colleague my system is a 2.1 Ghz with 1.5Gb ram and 128Mb gfx, they are often impressed, or think it's a medium system, they don't realise that it's a SoA Athlon on a 166FSB Mobo and a FX5200 FFS!! - I'm dying on this system, and hopefully the positive sides of teh imac will let me part with some dosh this week.

lol I can totally understand running on one of those myself...Hoping to jump to a all new windows free(except during gaming) world with the iMac :)

, I have my issues with 3dMark in general (namely the driver optimizations for the program), but you have to be more specific in your performance claim. The 8800 Ultra/GTX/GTS do just fine in games, usually beating the equivalent 7 series cards pretty handily. It is the odd configuration of the 8400/8600/8700 cards that gets them beat in real games. The 2900HD doesn't hold a candle to the GTX and really should be pitted against the 640MB GTS. The 2400/2600 are slower than the competition in games. But not 3dMark, ATI has higher scores in that...

And by odd configuration I am talking about the high ALU:TEX ratio. See this thread at Beyond3D for a lil more info [warning this thread can be pretty technical].

I'm just looking to use the 3dmark score as a starting point for a comparison since I know what my current system scores as, for me, the only show stopper for me would be if the new imac performs worse than the windows computer/g4 mac mini I want to replace it with.. since like others have said, for gaming I will most likely end up using XP/Bootcamp .. for everything else OSX.. While I wish that all publishers would make games native to the mac/osx , I have accepted reality that its not likely to happen any time soon (though things like CIDER) are sorta a step in the right direction (a baby step.. but a step) and with the recent gains in market share apple has had things are looking better every day .. granted .. its only a "first step" and its relatively low risk for the publisher.. but sometimes thats all it takes.. and lets face it, these game publishers at the end of the day are about money .. I accept CIDER for what it is, and if it helps to get more games to the mac (one way or another) then so be it... Yes, I know CIDER is just an OSX port of WINE.. And not all game publishers are going to port native to OSX and not all will use CIDER.. and the few games I do play only run on Windows.. so I am more or less stuck with it if I wanted it or not (and I don't).. If I didn't play any games then the mac as it is would be perfect.. but given the price of the iMac .. I want to be sure that what I am paying a premium for does everything I need it to now (DaOC) and in the near future (Spore, WarHammer Online, Age of Conan) {if you note those are all slated to be Windows only games}

Its a pitty Apple doesn't come out with a "Mac" .. ergo a non "pro" "mac pro".. or some sorta "power user" series of systems

but I am encouraged to see that the 3dmark06 score of the new iMac is BETTER than my current system... I will need to see more tests but I am very excited so far..

Yes I do .. infact I had one of those wonderful 5200 cards for sometime, then "upgraded" to a 6200 when the 5200 fried .. lol .. now I am using a 7800GS .. the 5200 was fine as I wasn't gaming all that much during the time I had it, it became painfully obvious I needed to replace it when I started playing Dark Age of Camelot.. (DaOC)..

-- oh the painful memories.

Did you upgrade in the same mobo config? because I could weather the wait till Leopard / further BTO options if I got a budget card to fill the gap?

I was not able to get 3DMark06 or ATITool to run - they didn't seem able to read the GPU bios correctly. This was XP though and they were on Vista...
