so i installed and ran my first game last night.
tremulous.
avg 90 FPS on my 24" 2.8GHz iMac w/ stock 1GB of ram, leopard. full resolution (1920x1200) and quality at highest settings. flawless game play.
granted, not the most graphic intensive game out there, but that's all i've tried so far.
unrelated to graphics but pretty damn cool:
oh a whim, i was able to get an old USB gravis gamepad pro that i bought about 4-5 years ago for my PC to work with the game! i was shocked. no extra software needed. just plugged it in, spent some time searching forums to figure out how to enable it in the game, and i was off and running!

Care to tell us what game it was?

I tried Unreal Tournament 3 last night on my 2.4GHz 20" at 1680x1050 and I was surprised by the good frame rates. Not tried putting details up though...

Agreed. I'd like to hear how it runs Crysis, Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock, etc....
Run them it will, run them with everything on at full Rez?? No thats for high powered cards costing $250 or more and sitting in Big Boxes. I think the Hardware is perfect for a all in one on your desk. Im using only 1 gig and have been very happy with the 2.4. Faster then my AMD 4200/7600GS machine that has two gigs. There is allways going to be a new Game trying to push new Videocards but at the moment current iMac with its different configurations is going to take care of most consumers. (Thats now if it will run UT3 on full mind you;)

I ran the Crysis on my 2.4 24" With 2 gig of RAM Win XP and at 1200 x 768 it hit 14 FPS in the GPU benchmark. On playing the game with the same settings it is very playable to my mind. The only noticeable slow down was at a cut scene where one of the crew get munched.

Bioshock demo ran on full everything (but only 2x AA) at 1200 x 768 and was again really playable with no slow down at all but it's a corridor shooter so it's a bit limited. Same with COD4 and again even better frame rates with no bottlenecks.

Armed Assault plays a lot better than it did on my old imac 1.83 Radeon X1600 and is now playable much the same as Crysis. ARMA is currently my fav stick to beat a computer with as it's full DX9 with a 10km view distance it's able to kick the **** out of anyones PC even the boy racers.

I was personally worried when I handed over £1200 for my imac that gaming performance would be down but I say with a big sigh of relief that it plays all cutting edge games well. At least to XBOX 360 standards

At least to XBOX 360 standards

Not quite. The XBOX360 renders at a lower resolution than you are using! So you are getting better than 360 quality. If you ran your games at 800x480 or so you'd get the same quality as the 360. Don't know about your frame rate though because these days you are more limited by shader power than fillrate!

Really, where did you find that out? I thought that 1080p was a res of 1200x720? If I run a 800x480 then the FPS for all games would be in the 60's!!!!
Personally I'm not a console fan as I like the community that you get with some games. Plus I think that the 360 is a horrible noisy thing with add ons that should be built in (wifi, HD).

Is that how MS are fooling people into the next gen world?

Beyond3D has some resolution list for popular games. I forget what post number it is though. Suffice it to say the 360 has only a few games that run at a resolution under 720p (1280x720) native.

The same can actually be said of the PS3.

The X1600 can't come close to the quality of the Xenos.

Has anyone played games such as Gears of War or The Witcher on any of the new iMacs? If so, how do they run (on Normal or High settings)?

I ask because I intend on getting a new 24" 2.8GHz Intel (with 2 or 3GB of RAM) in the new year, am going to wait until Macworld just in case any updates are mentioned. Won't be just playing games, will be doing Photoshop, Maya and the like but I know there won't really be an issue there, just want to see how it fares in the PC gaming department.

Thanks

ATi Catalyst Drivers

So when I am installing the ATi Catalyst Drivers 7.12, which graphic card driver should I choose to install? Desktop HD2600 Pro or Desktop HD2600XT?

If I choose the Desktop HD2600XT wouldn't that cause the core speeds and etc to up?
Would I be at risk because of the higher than factory recommended speeds
(higher temps)?

Where/How can I monitor my GPU's speeds and temps?

So which driver should I install? Or should I use the Mobility Modder application from Driver Heaven?

Thanks in advance! :D

Playing Call of Duty 4 at the moment. Most things are on max at 1650 resolution and 2x AA. It looks stunning and runs like silk!

Crysis requires a bit more tweaking. At 1650, everything on medium it is smoothish. I tried to lower the resolution but I got the blue screen of death. The second time I've seen the BSOD playing it. I think there are a few bugs that need ironing out.

I selected the XT. It's been running with no problems.

wow your playing it and its underclocked??? or have you OC'd it a tad? that seems like some very nice results tho, could u possibly run FRAPs to give a FPS or something?? would be interesting to see them :)

My 2.4 Ghz 20" Alu iMac when running windows also shows display adapter as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT - was trying to load Flight Sim when Mashita Slot Loading Drive has now failed both in windows and when running as iMac it just keeps throwing out all disks imediately after taking them in.

He doesn't state if he is running it at stock speeds or if he overclocked it but he does state that he used the official Ati Catalyst Drivers. Installing them is a MUST if you want decent gaming performance.

I am just wondering if he used Mobility Modder or this method.

Once my iMac arrives and I set it up, I will post gaming benchmarks for Enemy Terrority: Quake Wars and other games.

You do have an xt. If your Device ID is 0x9583, which it seems to be, you have an xt. Of course, it is the underclocked mobile, version, but still better than a pro. Happy gaming!

PS: I've got FSX too - set everything to about medium high, or to highest with no AA. It looks and feels really good. :D

Is this a joke? Or haven't you read the thread?
If you read the complete thread it appears yours is a 2600XT as well.

really?? Are you that serious?? then why does it say PRO instead if XT?? I'm getting a little hyper right about now:D:D

EDIT: wait, hold a sec, the 2600 XT has 512MB of vram, in system profiler it says number one, again, i have pro, number 2, i have 256mb of ram, anyone contacting apple on this?

EDIT 2: why dont we get someone with a 2600 series to open their imac and see if they got a pro or an XT, it should be clearly visible on the card
