My current system is a AMD 4800 X2, Geforce 7950 GT and bioshock works well but does suffer slowdowns at certain points and the same can be said for company of heroes. I'm redecorating and finding space for massive PC isnt easy, an iMac would fit in so much better and I have been wanting to try OSX for years now.

I am certain that there is probably slow down in CoH, but it is definitely not noticeable, I'm loving this game right now, been playing it pretty heavy the past week.

Yeah the expansion is fantastic, as long as the iMac can cope with games like this i'm good :)

I installed it all manually. Go to the Device manager in my computer properties, and upgrade the driver to the video card, skip all the automatic driver stuff and say you "have disk"

I know this thread is a little old now and that this is a bit off topic, but I wonder if you could explain to me how this is done. I tried to do the same thing, ie "have disk" but when I browse to the location of the file it doesn't recognise that the file is even there...

Do I have to uninstall the drivers that bootcamp installed in order to run dedicated win xp drivers?

Half way down this page I give instructions.

I really hate to drag an old thread back to the top, but I just wanted to say I followed your instructions to the letter, and I'm still getting the same results with the Catalyst 7.9 driver in HL2: Lost Coast, TF2 and Bioshock that I did with the boot camp driver. Do you have any ideas as to why this is? I only ask because you seem to know what you're doing, and I'd really like to get those nice 70+ results you're getting in Lost Coast, as I'm only pulling about 30. :p

Thanks.

Edit: Forgot to mention I have the 20" 2.4GHz model with the 2600 PRO/XT

Are you sure the new driver installed? Something might have went wrong, when you are in the windows hardware manager doing the driver install, at the very end it will start installing files with a little animated window showing files going back and forth

If you are getting the same performance as the bootcamp drivers, the new drivers seemed to have not installed. Also are you sure you picked the right driver and not reinstall the bootcamp driver?

You will definitely know when you have the proper drivers installed, cause you will go HOLY *#@%

Heh, that's what I'm hoping for.

It appeared that they installed, as I got the little file transfer animation, and then I had to reboot. When I logged back in, I checked the device manager, and I now see this:
devicecq1.jpg

It reads 2600 PRO now instead of 2600XT, so I know something was installed.

I'll have to do some poking around and see what might be wrong.

Just wanted to say that I tried uninstalling ALL traces of video drivers, then used your technique to install the Beta Catalyst 8.0 drivers, and it's the same story. 30FPS in Lost Coast at 1680x1050. :(

This is weird, you sure you don't have AA turned on? Antialising will kill your system. If you installed ATI Tray Tool it automatically turns on 16x AA.

I really can't explain it either; I've got AA turned off (though turning it onto full 6xAA only drops it by 5 FPS anyway), but I still don't get the results you do. I guess I'll just have to live with what I have and put faith in Apple/ATI and hope they release something better down the line.

Thanks for your help though.

Edit: I noticed you have 2GB of RAM (according to your signature) whereas I have only 1GB. I doubt it would make a difference as big as 30FPS vs 70, but it's the only thing I can think of.

sorry to revive an old thread, but...

I tried reading through most of the thread, but there is toooo much.

Has it been confirmed to be an under-clocked 2600XT?

I'm buying a new IMac this week. Do I need to do anything to it under windows? new drivers?

thanks,
~Luf.

It has been confirmed that it is an underclocked Mobility Radeon HD2600XT.

It's the same graphics core as the desktop version just slower.

So does that mean that we should install the 7.10 or should we install the 8.0 beta Catalyst?

And should it be Mobility XT, Mobility PRO, Non-Mobility PRO or Non-Mobility XT?

I can't speak for others, but I downloaded the normal non-mobility Catalyst 7.10 and installed it through "update driver" in device manager. I selected "ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT" from the long list of cards it shows.

Everything worked fine with a noticeable improvement over the Boot Camp driver.

I've done the same with the Mobility Radeon X1600 in the previous iMac. It looks like the desktop driver doesn't cause any issues with the mobile version.

Leopard testing?

Just browsed through this thread (took a while...) and was wondering if anyone has tested this gpu now that leopard has been released? Thanks.

Has the latest update to Leopard disabled the ability to update the catalyst driver in boot camp?

I tried the suggestion listed about 5 entry's up the page, however, when I drill down into the ATI>Support>...etc.. etc...Drivers>.... there is nothing there... only the following empty folder. B_53901 and a file listed as CX_53_250

Any other ways of installing the latest catalyst driver? Am I doing something wrong..

Thanks for your help guys.

I think I did this the day before the most recent Leopard updates but I don't think that should affect anything Windows side.

Here's what ya gotta do. (Or similar to what I did)
I'm assuming you have Windows XP for this.

1) Download the 7.10 driver(I just downloaded the driver but I guess you could also download Catalyst 7.10 and follow the same steps) for the Radeon HD 2600 series.

2) Try to install it the normal way. After decompressing and then opening up the installer, it should fail and say it can't find an ATI display adapter. This is normal. There should now be some folders at the root of your C drive (ATI\SUPPORT\...\...etc). Somewhere in there should be a file with the extension ".inf".

3) Find your way to the system properties(Right click "My Computer" and select Properties. Another way is to go to the control panel and choose "System"). Click the "Hardware" tab and then click "Device Manager". Under "Display Adapters" double click "Mobility ATI RADEON HD 2600 XT" and then click "Update Driver". Try to manually select the driver and click "Have Disk" when you see it.

Alternate 3) If for some reason you don't have a graphics driver installed and you don't see "Display Adapter" in the Device Manager, follow these steps. In the control panel, click "Add New Hardware". From this point it should be similar to the end of the normally recommended step 3). Find "Have Disk" and select it.

4) After clicking "Have Disk" locate the ".inf" file somewhere in the ATI folder. Now you'll see a loooooooooooooooooooooooooong list. Find and select "ATI RADEON HD 2600 XT".

If I recall correctly, the rest is self explanatory.

Yes... the loooooooooooooooooong list of drivers that you say should appear isn't there. That's why I'm curious if the latest leopard update blocked tampering with the drivers. Considering all the ATI problems as of late freezing up systems, I wonder if they put some sort of.. "don't copy any drivers to the windows machine" command.

I've tried installing the catalyst drivers multiple times and it can only get so far before it stops. And then going and hunting for them in the C: drive only gets me so far before I find empty folders. It would appear that it's not installing the big group 'o available drivers...

Just a theory.

Ok.. the plot thickens. The files are there, but only if I go and hunt for them directly in the C: drive.. they won't show up through the driver update process as described above.

I went and enabled "Show all hidden files" so I can see all windows files and such... but still no luck. Very odd.

Anyone have any hints on what the deal is? The driver update window for some reason can't see the files.

Ok ignore my conspiracy theories... I found what I was doing wrong.

Just a quick benchmark update - in Doom3 in Windows XP, with the old drivers that are still bundled with Leopard I got 79FPS in 1024 x 768 High Quality. With the new ones (v 7.11) I got 100FPS.
